Serena never knew this because Haley is four years older, the same age as Darien. Their father is from the moon. He was royalty; bred to be married to Serenity. Haley's mother was from Earth; she was a poor working woman who joined up with the Liberation just as the Silvermoon Millennium had reached its peak with Serenity soon to become the new ruler. Mae-lynn Aurielle was killed when the Negaverse attacked. Background on this whole story is quite complicated. It began about 10,000 BC. The Silver Millennium was the most peaceful time the galaxy had known since the human race had begun. Though the planets were ruled by great and wise leaders, there never is such a thing as a perfect system. The economy was growing and more workers were needed to work for lower wages. Some bigger business owners had (semi-)secret sites in which they employed people for very little money and worked them hard. This is when the Liberation was born. It began with a few groups of oppressed workers, but there was very little support from the more powerful people of the planets for they did not know of the exploitation that was going on. Mae-lynn was born into a poor family and forced to work the mines very young to help support them because they made so little money. She was a strong-hearted girl though, and quickly joined up with the Liberation when she was fourteen. With her ingenuity, people became aware of the Liberation's plight and gained more support. Mae-lynn amassed the aid of some influential people, namely the King of Earth (Darien's father) and the soon-to-be King of the Moon, Sebastian (Serenity's fiancee). For years they battled soldiers sent by the business owners in the Court Houses and out. The businesses were doing a wonderful job of keeping the Liberation out of the limelight and thus making it a difficult job for the revolution, even with their powerful allies. Sebastian and Mae-lynn spent many hours together, and soon there grew a fondness which resulted in a secret affair. Mae-lynn knew of Sebastian's engagement, and never asked any more of him even when he had to leave the Liberation to get married to Serenity and help her with the Moon Kingdom. Not long after he left, she realized she was pregnant with Haley. Mae-lynn continued fighting with the Liberation even after her daughter was born. The King of Earth continued to support their movement as well. Darien was born eight months before Haley, and the two were playmates while their parents battled for the Liberation. Haley had a rough childhood being moved here and there. The only constants in her life were Darien and her mother. When she was four years old, a protest outside Serenity's castle on the Moon was planned. Mae-lynn had no one to look after Haley and had to take her with her on the journey. Darien's father had a whole court to look after his son, but he was so caught up in the politics of the Liberation, he did not even think of offering his Court's services to Mae-lynn. So Haley ended up on the Moon within a protest that was progressing to violence. Haley's mother took her to a secluded garden on the royal estate, and told the child to stay put until she came to get her. Haley was a good child, but inherited her mother's rebellion and curiosity. She grew bored of sitting there in the garden and decided to explore. The girl could hear the protest at the front of the castle and made sure to stay far away from it as possible. Haley's young mind was alight with awe as she toured the extravagant gardens that belonged to the royals. Her expedition brought her to a rear entrance partly hidden by vines and she eagerly entered the castle in hopes of seeing some new treasures. A winding staircase took the red-headed child up to a corridor that was lavishly decorated and consisted of many doors. Faintly Haley heard a woman's voice humming a soft lullaby. It was such a soothing song and the child was unconsciously drawn to it. She came upon a door slightly ajar and peered through the crack. It was a lovely spectacle. A beautiful woman with long flowing locks held a small infant in her arms as she moved to and fro on a rocking chair lined with silk. She was still humming the sweet song as Haley looked on envious of the complete tranquillity of the scene. She, herself, had never experienced such utter peace. Her world was always topsy-turvy with her mother's involvement in the Liberation. She longed to be that baby in the woman's arms. Haley suddenly realized the woman had stopped humming and was looking directly at her. She quickly jumped back and the door swung open a little more. The elegant figure motioned to her. "Come in, child. There's nothing to be afraid of here." Haley cautiously took a few steps forward wanting very much to see the woman and her baby up closer, but not daring to get herself into trouble. The woman stood up and put her child in a bassinet with rounds and rounds of lacy ruffles surrounding it. A cradle for an angel. The woman spoke delicately as she glided over to Haley. "Please don't be afraid. No one will hurt you. My daughter and I would love some company since everyone has been so very busy today." Haley stared up at this ethereal creature. She had no idea that this was Queen Serenity of whom she had heard so many wonderful things about. To her it seemed like a dream in which a celestial spirit was welcoming her into the nursery of a newborn goddess. The glow of warmth and love that emanated from the woman was supernaturally perfect as the whole situation. Serenity tenderly placed her hand on the child's head and ran her fingers along her face. Whether the knowledge came to her because she was psychic or just plain intuition, Serenity knew who this child was. It was her husband's child; she could see some of him in the girl. She was also quite familiar with who Mae-lynn was for she had known that Sebastian had an affair with her. Serenity had known it through her own observations of her husband and through the simple deduction of facts. Yet the Queen's name reflected her character very well. Serenity knew that Sebastian truly loved her and a short moment of passion with another did not bother her. She could never hate anyone. There was another reason why Serenity held the child's head in her hand for a little longer. Believing that the eyes were the window to the soul, she could see that the girl had a significant role to play in her own daughter's life. The girls, afterall, were half-sisters. The specific details were unknown to her, but the power within Serenity was alerted to what lay within the girl. The only way to tell was to let the children make the connection themselves. "What is your name, child?" "Haley." was the reply. The girl felt small tremors course through her body when the woman had touched her. Being slightly shocked by this unusual feeling did not cause her to be shy though. "Do you live here?" "Yes, I've lived here all my life and I hope my daughter will do the same. Would you like to see her, Haley?" Haley nodded and took ahold of Serenity's hand which was presented to her. The hand, which was very much unlike her mother's, lead her to the bassinet where the baby could be heard cooing to herself. Haley put her hands on the edge and stood on her toes to look in. "Be careful not to tip the cradle, dear." Serenity said lightly as she sat back in her rocking chair. Haley glanced back at her. "I'll be perfectly all right. I'm not clumsy." Serenity laughed a dainty little titter as Haley turned her attention back to the infant. The baby was about two months old and looked quite serene as she peered up at this new person. Haley couldn't help but look directly into the baby's big blue eyes, and then she couldn't pull her gaze away. She knew this baby, but really there was no way she could. There was something there though. Something that brought out a rush of unconditional love and a fierce need to protect her. Haley was almost taken aback by these oncoming impressions. Haley knew her name too. But it didn't seem to come into her mouth; it was on the tip of her tongue. She quickly asked, "What's her name?" "Serena." Serenity smiled upon the scene. She could see exactly what was happening. Her intuition was correct and she was beginning to understand more. Haley now fixated her gaze on the tiny crescent moon on Serena's forehead. It surely didn't look like a tattoo, and who would tattoo a little baby anyway? The crescent moon added to the beauty of the infant, one which Haley felt could only be found in a castle, a castle on the Moon. "She is a beautiful baby, isn't she?" Serenity seemed to repeat exactly what the four-year old was thinking. Then noticing the look of longing in the child's eyes, eyes so much like her own daughter's, smiled adoringly on Haley. "You are a beautiful girl yourself. Serena's beauty gleams like the empyrean full moon while yours blazes like the shimmering sun. Did you know it is the sun's beams that illuminate the Moon so everyone on Earth may enjoy its splendor?" At that particular moment, Haley heard her name being called from the gardens beneath the nursery's windows. It was her mother's worried voice. The red-head child looked anxiously at Serenity. "Say good-bye to Serena and head on your way. We don't want to worry your mother any more." Haley quickly turned and reached into the bassinet to let the baby grip her little finger. "Bye Serena." The infant princess cooed in response. Haley's finger was released and she impulsively used it to trace out the crescent moon on Serena's forehead. As she traced it, a similar moon appeared on her forehead set in a halo of fiery flames. Haley was unaware of this, but Serenity and her daughter saw it. Neither made any mention of it. May-lynn's voice was heard louder now and more urgent. Haley ran for the door and the hallway that lead outside. Serenity waved after her. "Good-bye, Haley. Keep safe and happy." As Haley hurried outside, Serenity looked down out of the nursery window at Mae-lynn. Knowing she was being watched, the Liberation fighter glanced up to see the Queen of the Moon Kingdom framed in the window. The two women exchanged knowing gazes, and after Mae-lynn politely bowed down, Serenity disappeared into her castle. When her daughter came running around the corner in the garden, Mae-lynn scooped her up into her arms and didn't question where she had been. She knew that she was in good hands. What Mae-lynn did notice was the fading haloed crescent moon on Haley's forehead. She said nothing to the child and made a mad dash from the royals' estate to the ship ready to take them directly back to Earth. The protest at the Moon Kingdom did turn violent. King Sebastian was called upon to calm the Liberation fighters since he once fought with them, but there were some that believed him to be a traitor and he was attacked. Mae-lynn had watched in horror as Sebastian was beaten to death knowing that if she did anything she, too, would be killed. The royal guards arrived on the scene and Mae-lynn ran off to find her daughter. After that incident, Mae-lynn broke all of her connections to the Liberation, and under a new name, started a new life. She had always had a knack for scrying and set up her own little business doing predictions for people through crystals. Mae-lynn didn't make a very good living, but had enough to feed and clothe her daughter. She made friends with a band of gypsies who introduced her and Haley into a new world of magic. This was the closest thing Haley ever had to a full-fledge family. Unfortunately Mae-lynn predicted the future correctly on more than one occasion. She knew that some powerful dark force was going to attack their solar system and destroy it almost completely. A week before the Negaverse attacked, Mae-lynn brought her eighteen-year-old daughter into a room which the gypsies saved for special rituals. The gypsies themselves were away on one of their journeys. Mae-lynn had prepared a ritual herself, a ritual to give Haley eternal life. It would be the only way she would survive the attack. Haley did not know what her mother was up to, but she fully trusted her to do what was best. Mae-lynn was only an amateur with magic, but the ritual was successful. Though neither of them knew it at that time. Then the Negaverse came and the Earth was devastated. No one on Earth knew that it was Queen Serenity on the Moon that saved their world. All they knew was that it was suddenly over. Only 1% of the Earth's population survived. The people on the Moon and other planets were annihilated. Mae-lynn died fighting the Negaverse. Haley was wounded but did not die. A few gypsies also survived and came back to their home to find Haley lying in a pool of blood. Using herbs and magic, they believed they saved her. No one knew that Haley was now an eternal being. . . . . yet. Haley and her gypsies managed to gather together a group of about 200 people to begin a new civilization. They choose a small continent to be their home and named it Atlantis. Other people around the world gathered in tribes and eventually formed societies of their own, but none were as advanced as those in Atlantis. The Atlantians kept alive the old stories of those who lived before the Negaverse attacked, and from the memories of these great people, they too became great people. As the years went by, Haley and those around her noticed that she was not aging. No big deal was made of it until she turned forty and still looked eighteen! It was then that she realized what her mother did, but for the life of her, she couldn't understand why. As time past and her friends and lovers died before her eyes, Haley began to see her eternal life as a curse. Then the day of the big earthquake came and Atlantis was lost beneath the ocean. Haley was the only survivor. No one outside of Atlantis could or would understand her situation, so she became a loner and a wanderer. She could make enough money for food and clothes by doing crystal magic for paying customers, but soon such crafts were thought to be witchery and she had to make enough to live on doing other odd jobs. Haley was not as accurate as her mother when it came to scrying, but she could see enough to know that the Negaverse would return someday and she had to be there to help Earth. That was the only thing that kept her going. 5
