Freeze!" There was a series of systematic screams in the air as seven six foot tall men dressed in black and armed with several automatic silencers burst simultaneously into a well known bank in Melbourne. Darien reacted almost immediately on his police instinct as his hands reached cautiously into his coat pocket and took out his own rifle. Hiding it away from sight, he followed the men's orders and crouched down near the ground with one of his hands on his head. The other hand holding the gun, he hid away from sight. It had only been three weeks since he's started his job as a cop again. That accident one-year ago had cost him his job temporarily and the lost of his driver license. He never thought a 15-minute trip to the bank would become the inevitable screaming headlines for tomorrow's paper. Two loud guns shots snapped Darien out of his thoughts and forced him reluctantly to stay in focus. He realized than that, besides several silencers, the robbers also had two machine guns and rifles. Gripping his own gun in his hands tightly, Darien knew with deep certainty that to capture and arrest those robbers was not going to be an easy job. "Don't move!" one of the men's screamed at an old lady at the other side of the bank as she tried to get up. Darien watched helplessly as she trembled painfully than collapsed on the ground. Heart attack. Darien realized solemnly. There was a series of screams all across the room. "Shut up! Shut up!" one of the taller robber with a rifle ordered. A man near the old lady rushed to her aid. He's going to get himself killed. Darien realized. There was another shot and the man was down. Dead or dying. No one moved or even dared to scream after that. Darien surveyed the room consciously. There were approximately 30 or so people in the bank, most of them were men and women in their prime, but besides them were also a few elder customers and some young children too. "Give me all the money you have in the bank and put it into these bags. Now!" A gruffy looking man, masked and holding a machine gun boomed. He tossed the bags at a timid looking man in a corner. The man shrunk further into the corner and refused to budge. "Now! I said. Now!" the thief ordered. "Hurry up and fill the bag before I fill your brain with bullets!" The man still didn't budge. Darien saw now that he was sweating heavily. Don't play games with him. Darien begged silently. There was no telling what those bastards would do if the man didn't do what he was told. Fortunately, the man moved at last. He seemed to have calm down quiet significantly. "You." He said, pointing at a girl in her late teens. "Go and ring the police alarm." Darien was surprised as well as amused at that order. Ring the police indeed. What sort of criminals did they think they were. They sure sounded confident at dealing with the police. It almost seemed as though they wanted publicity-an audience. Silence filled the room as the girl walked cautiously towards the phone and dialed 000. Darien listened carefully as she talked to the person on the other line. "Yes. There're about 30 to 40 people in here?two of them are hurt, this old lady and this man?I-I don't know. Umm?there are seven of them?yes they're all holding guns?I don't kno-ow" Her voice trembled and tears of fright ran down her face. "Please..Just please, send someone hear to help us?they're keeping us as hostages and-" There was a gunshot. Blood appeared on the front of her T-shirt. The girl never made a sound as the phone dropped from her hands and she collapsed onto the ground. Screams sounded from several corners of the room. Darien closed his eyes and took in a long breath. This was murder! If these guys had just came in here for the money, than take the money! There was no point in hurting or killing anyone. Darien clenched his gun even tighter in his hand as the silent anger boiled inside him. If only he could get out there and help, but Darien knew it would do him or anyone else no good. There was one of him and seven of them. Taking several deep breaths, Darien forced himself to calm down. "What did you do that for? She didn't do anything wrong!" a voice sounded from the back of the room. The person didn't sound scared, just angry. He was speaking out for all of them. What had the girl done? Or was this just plain cold-blooded murder. One of the taller thieves scowled. "you better keep your mouth shut, college boy. Or you'll be my next victim." He waved the gun around the room "And that goes for all of you. If you dare speak than-" he pointed at the girl "You'll end up like her." Everyone calmed down after that and soon the distant sound of sirens could be heard. Hearing that siren seemed to have lifted off a weight in everyone heart. But Darien knew better. This was not going to be one easy fight. There were three people hurt already, and this bloodshed had only started 15 minutes ago. "Okay, everybody." One of the men announced-he seemed to be the one doing most of the talking. "We're going to have an audience." He sounded almost menacing as he utter those words. Suddenly, Darien's mobile rang. Damn it. He fumbled clumsily in his jacket but it was too late. One of the men grabbed the phone from his hand and put it next to his ear. Darien watched as his face darkened. After a while, whoever it was on the other line must have stopped talking. The men clicked the power button on the phone and let it drop into his coat pocket. He stared hard at Darien, and Darien challenged him back with that otherworldliness intensity in his own eyes. Than, slowly-surprisingly, the man's mouth twitched and he smiled. "Well, it seemed like we have a cop in here." He announced at last. Darien's opened his mouth but he could not speak. How could he have possibly known? As if reading his mind, the man answered his question "It seems Detective fox rang to tell you to help out here." He smiled sweetly "Well it seemed like you're here already. Isn't that right Darien?" Great he knows my name as well. That was it than. Darien has had enough. He stood up and took his gun out. So did six other thieves, but the man who stood in front of Darien never moved-he was apparently their leader. He held out his hand "Drop the guns, Boys. He won't shoot me." Darien's eyes glittered "Oh yeah? You want to bet?" he challenged. The man smiled back at him "Well Darien." He said in a bittersweet tone "You wouldn't want me to kill that young lady over there. Would you?" he took out his gun and pointed it at a very attractive woman near the door. A couple of people gasped but Darien didn't wavered, he kept his gun leveled. He didn't pull the trigger either, he knew if he made the wrong move. Than that innocent woman over there will die. His thoughts were cut short by a booming voice from outside "Attention all, inside the bank. This is Captain Nicholas Fox of the Tokyo Police. Throw down your weapons and come out with our hands on your head. You have thirty seconds to comply." The thieves did not comply. Darien hadn't expected them to. Infact, both Darien and the thief ignored the commotion outside. "Put down the gun, Darien." The thief said. "Or I'll shoot." Darien looked at the woman cowering by the door, he saw the tears running her face and somehow, he couldn't quite bring himself to risk her life for the exchange of the thief's. He lowered his gun. The thief laughed "You are a sad character Darien. You've just made the worst choice possible." Than a shot rang out and Darien felt an explosive pain in his left side. He heard a series of screams around him but his mind seemed to have stopped functioning. He blinked, the gun dropped from his hand and clattered to the ground. "You bastard!" He gasped, clutching his side with his hand. A wave of nausea washed over him. Gasping, Darien slumped against the wall behind him. He looked down at his wound and saw the blood pumping through his fingers and onto the ground. Vaguely, Darien heard the distant booming of Fox's microphone "Thirty seconds have passed. If you don't come out right now, we'll get ready to open fire!" Than he heard another voice, This one much nearer-much more sinister "Fox! We have at least 30 hostages in here, including one of your fellow cops. If you dare open fire on us now. I assure you. No person in here will come out alive!" Hearing this, Darien struggled harder to stay in focus. He couldn't collapse now, not with a whole room full of people for him to rescue. "Alright. We know you have wounded in there. We ask you to at least let them out as they may need immediate medical attention." A surge of hope rose in Darien's heart. He knew the thieves won't let him out, but at least the others may have a chance to get out alive. "No! If they want medical attention. You'll have to send someone in here." What game was he playing? Darien asked himself repeatedly. Again and again he had asked himself that question, but no answer have ever came. After considering, Fox announced his decision "Okay. We're sending in two doctors and a nurse. They're coming in now. Please do not open fire." Darien felt a relieve wash over him as he heard this, True their fight was far from being over, but at least just for now, no one had to die. Finally, Darien felt the last bit of strength leave him and elapse reluctantly into darkness. ********************************************************************************* "Hey. Can you hear me?" "Just relax okay. It's going to hurt a bit" Darien groaned. The pain in his side increased as something pressed against the wound. He's head whirled, but his mind was very clear. Their situation has not change. It may have changed literally, but overall the danger still existed. What's more. Now three more people were in danger. Darien winced as medicine was applied to his wound. "Sorry." There it was. That again, that voice. It brought back memories to him, memories of a world very different from the one he lives in now. Perhaps too, of a life that had once been filled with happiness, filled with memories and everything that had ever truly belonged to him-but now be lost to him forever. With great efforts, Darien forced his eyes opened. But the person who face him-those cascades of silver blonde hair done up in a style similar to *meatballs* those beautiful blue eyes, those beautiful delicate features and-that scar. It couldn't be, but it was. The girl who stood in front of him was the very same person who he had ran over that stormy night one year ago. "You-" Darien began. "Shhh. They're watching us. Keep your voice down. I don't want to die okay." Darien nodded slowly. "What are you doing in here?" "What do you think? I'm a nurse." She whispered. Sighing, Darien let his eyes close again. The incredible pain was causing him to feel nauseous. Forcing his eyes open again, Darien looked down at his wound. it was still bleeding heavily, but not as bad as before. He surveyed the other patients around the room. The two doctors that had came in was trying their best to tend to all the wounded, but there was simply too many for them to tend to immediately. "What's your name?" "Serena." "Serena what?" "Serena something. I don't know. Just something." Putting his bloody hands over Serena's, Darien said "Serena. I want you to leave me here, and tend to the other wounded people." She looked at him for a very long time than "But you're wounded." She protested quietly. "I'll be fine. I'm a cop. I've taken bullets in me tons of times" He said "But those people. They haven't. So go now, and tend to them. I'll be alright." Finally, she nodded "Okay." On impulse, because Darien knew that if he didn't say it now, he may never see Serena again, he reached out and grabbed her hands. "Yeah?" Serena asked surprised. "Just promise me one thing." "What?" "Promise me that you if we ever get out of here, you'll come and visit me in the hospital." Serena looked at him. Her heart was suddenly filled with admiration for his brave man in front of her. "Alright. I will." Than after a pause "Take care." She grinned as she left his side and busied herself with the other wounded... ******************************************************************************* Darien didn't become conscious again until late evening, when he did. Serena was there to greet him. "Hi. I told you, I'll come and see you, didn't I?" Serena smiled. Darien groaned and tried to sit up. Serena pushed him down again. "Hey!" he protested. "You're not suppose to move. The doctor said." He smiled "Alright, Miss Nurse." Than after a pause "I didn't think you'd come." Serena studied his expression closely. He really did sound sincere. "Well, now I'm here." She smiled again. Neither spoke after that. Perhaps it was the tenseness in the atmosphere that was pushing one apart from the other. But talk as Serena loved to, she could not utter a single word in front of him. He was a man of a million faces. She knew. There had never been a moment in time since the first time she'd met him that Serena had ever guessed what was going on inside his mind. He was a complex character, so different from her own. As Serena knew that she herself has never been brave, nor ever had the courage to over come the powerful force of her own fears. Even when she had first woken up from her coma three months ago, totally deprived of her memory, Serena had known that she was not a strong woman. She had known as soon as her eyes had opened and she had cried her first tear that the world will not be kind to her. Whilst Serena pondered over her many thoughts, Darien was pondering over his. This was the girl. This was the girl who he had ran over one year ago. What was going on in her mind? He wondered. How was that one-year passed? Had he caused her pain? Darien didn't know. All he knew was that, a prize must be paid for his mistake. At last he spoke. "You?you live alone?" Serena shrugged "Well, kind of. You see, I had a car accident one year ago. And for most of that time I was in a coma. When I woke up three months ago, I couldn't remember anything of the past. The people at the hospital have been really kind to me. They offered me a job as a nurse and now I live in the hospital literally." "And you like living here?" Darien asked. Serena looked down at her lap "To tell you the truth. I don't. I mean I enjoy my job, but staying in the hospital 24 hours a day is just too much. There are too many deaths and sicknesses in here. It overwhelms me but I don't have the money to move out." Darien made a daring move than. He never stopped twice to think about the outcome of this outrageous idea. "Would you like to move in with me?" Serena stared at him. "What?" she narrowed her eyes. Seeing her stare, Darien realized what she must have been thinking. He shook his head furiously and raised his arms in embarrassment. "No, no, no. It's not that. It's just that, well umm..." He planned quickly. "Well, you see. I have a spare room in the flat I'm living in and I need someone to help out with the rent." "I don't have much money." "I rent cheap." Serena considered. "Do you have a lot of trees around your flat?" she asked. Darien was puzzled "No. Just two or three. Why?" "Spiders." Darien grinned "Fear not, my fair lady, I will protect you." Serena smiled "You know, you are a man of a million faces. You change too constantly. You need to settle down." And so, Serena moved in with Darien and thus our story begins... *************************************************************************** Serena was having a nightmare. It made her cry, yet somehow. To Serena, it seemed like a figment of another dimension. One she doesn't belong in any longer. In the dream, someone was yelling her. Hurtful words, they were and it did hurts. Very, very much. Serena couldn't see the person in the dream properly, but somehow she knew that whoever the person was. They had belonged to the world she had left behind, one year ago. (Flashback) "If only you could be more like your sister." the woman in the dream had said to her. The woman sighed "If only you were more like your sister." She repeated. "Well I'm not her! I'm not Elizabeth! I'm not Elizabeth!" (End of Flashback) Serena woke up with tears in her eyes. She didn't know why. Perhaps the dream was more than just a nightmare to her. It was a memory. One that she could not put down and forget. Kicking away the blanket, Serena crawled out of bed and slid on her pair of slippers. Gently she padded out into the living room and flipped on the light switch. Darien wasn't home yet. He often worked late, sometimes till the crack of dawn. There were always new cases to solve, and new murderers to be uncovered. It had been liked this for weeks now. She liked living here, Darien had given her everything she had wanted and yet, sometimes. It was not enough. It had never seemed right for her to move in with Darien. After all, they didn't know each other and yet, from the very beginning. She'd always had feelings for him. She didn't love him. How could she? Not in that way anyway. They were friends, acquaintances and perhaps even strangers. And yet, from the very beginning, Serena had felt the bond between them. It had been what made her trust him, because she knew that he was a good person. He wouldn't possibly hurt her. She could have put her life in his hands, if the need be. The door opened. Darien was back. "Hi." Serena said she smiled. He smiled back "What are you doing up so late? Don't you have a shift at the hospital tomorrow morning." "I can't sleep." "Why not?" He looked up her queerly. Serena avoided his gaze "I had another dream. It scares me." "About your past?" Serena nodded. "Yes. My past. My past scares me." Darien shook his head "Serena. You remember too much of the past, you will only be unhappy like that. Learn to forget." Serena jumped up from her seat. Suddenly she was angry. "But I don't remember, Darien! That's my problem. I can't remember anything. These are just fragments of my messed up life! I can't even remember who my family is. All I know is that, some drunk ran me over, I went into a coma and now I wake up with no memories! That's my past! That's my past Darien! Nothing else!" The room lapsed into an eerie silence. Darien suddenly felt a cold rush of air brush pass his back. He looked down at his feet and tried to force himself to stop functioning. But he couldn't. For how can anyone force themselves to stop functioning. It was just one of those things that weren't possible when you're human. Someone had once told him that, a human's emotions were the hardest to control. "Look, meatball head, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that." He opened the fridge and took out two cans of beer. He threw one at Serena. Serena gave him an incredulous look "What?" Darien shrugged "Drink it. Get drunk! Come on! It doesn't matter." "You are teaching me to drink? What kind of a cop teaches people to drink? I thought you were supposed to encourage no drinking. That's what the television people always says." Darien smiled "You can forget many things when you are drunk." "Perhaps, the person who ran me over wanted to forget things too." "Perhaps." Darien said softly. Perhaps. Opening the can, Serena slowly took a sip from the beer. Her face creased immediately in disgust as the bitter taste ran down her throat. "That's disgusting!" "You'll get used to it." Darien said, he took a big mouthful from his can. Serena looked at him strangely. All of a sudden, the world seemed very, very big "Do you have many things to forget too, Darien?" Darien didn't answer her question, instead he smiled "Sometimes, ignorance is a bliss." He took another gulp. Serena didn't press on. She knew it would hurt him, if she did. She bought the can to her mouth, and this time, Serena took a big gulp. She closed her eyes as the alcohol ran down her throat. Outside, in the light of the dying moon, the sun was dawning.
