That was the first thing Darien had found out when he met her at the hospital. He hadn't expected her to be like that, he hadn't expected someone so ill to be so brave and independent. He hadn't expected anyone so young to die either, yet the world was a cruel place and when destiny surrounds, fate always overpower humanity. People at the hospital had said that there was nothing they could do about the process of her illness. "Everything is up to her now." They had said, But Darien couldn't believe that. Suddenly, their existence in the world seemed like a harsh reality. "Are you hurting?" Was the first thing, Elizabeth had asked him while they sat on the same row of seats in the hospital waiting room. Darien had been there for his last checkup on the recovery of his bullet wound. And Elizabeth-she had been there to ask the doctors when she was going to die. "No. Not that much anymore." Darien had said, than he had fired back his question "How come you're here?" She gave him a short smile "To see how long I have to live." Darien didn't push on after that, and their conversation slowly subsided to other topics. Life, careers, world peace and even love?the essence of their topics could have potentially taken them over the boundaries of their companionship and beyond. She seemed older than she looked, or so Darien thought. How could anyone know and understand so much when they had lived for just shortly 20 years or so. It all seemed impossible, yet it was true, unconsciously, Darien felt himself being drawn into that sorrow and mysteriousness of Elizabeth. Unfortunately, the hospital offers no seclusion and soon it was Darien turn to checkup. "Good luck, Elizabeth." He had said as he'd left his seat to enter the doctor's room. "Thanks. Never mind about me. I will come out alive." When Darien came out from the room, Elizabeth was gone. ****************************************************************************** Raye Hino was only 17 when she left her family and started two timing working at Target as a casual and studying medicine in Uni. Now days, she works at one of the most well known hospitals in Tokyo as one of their Brain specialist. Apart from being a brain specialist, she has also had experiences in the field of psychiatry. As far as Raye was concerned though, she didn't just want to be any doctor. She wanted to be the finest doctor anybody had ever seen. She wanted to save the world. She wanted to find a cure for cancer; a new vaccine; a sensational breakthrough in the world of science. Having spent the last few years of teenager life on the streets, Raye was nobody's fool. She knew the importance of self-confidence and independence if one wishes to stay alive in society. Raye was a friendly person by nature, though only 23 she had learnt many things most people would never have learnt until they reached the age of two hundred and thirty three. And like Darien, she was a complex character. Raye has seen many things in her short life, too many perhaps. Birth, life, death?they were all part of that same routine that Raye was forced to follow everyday. That day, Raye was making her regular checks on each patient when she arrived at the door of room 304 and stopped and listened. "Ahhhhhh!!!!! What's your name! Kill it! Stamp on it! Throw it out! Just get it away from me!" Raye raised an amused eyebrow, opened the door and peeked in. What she saw at first sight did not immediately travel to her brain and settle, instead it stayed, lingering in her eyes and leaving her to ponder. Apparently, a nurse and a man dressed in patient's clothing were attempting unsuccessfully to kill a large spider by throwing their shoes against a wall five meters away. "Damn." The nurse said. "Wait, wait, wait. I'll get it this time." Shaking her head, Raye fought to hide her smile. "Ohhh!!! You missed it again!" Raye cleared her throat and stepped into the room "I hardly expect a patient to be killing a spider in the hospital room, when he should be in bed." The commotion in the room stopped simultaneously, as both nurse and patient stopped in mid air. The patient spoke first. "Sorry. Dr." He grinned sheepishly. Raye turned towards the nurse "As for you-" Raye glanced quickly at the nametag pinned securely against the nurse's white uniform. "Serena. I would like to see you at the door of my office in ten mins." "But-" Serena protested. The patient spoke up "Yeah, Dr. It wasn't Serena's fault. I was?umm?scared of spiders, and Serena was just helping me." He winked at Serena. Raye raised her eyebrows. "Is that so." Somehow she had doubts about the truth of his words. "Yeah, sure. Dr. Don't mistaken me because of my big built." He grinned "I'm actually a very vulnerable man." Raye clenched her teeth and glared at him. "And who may I ask a you?" "My name is Scott." He bowed in curtsey. "Nice to meet you. My beautiful doctor." Raye narrowed her eyes. "Oh Scott, is it. I see." She grabbed his medical history chart and scanned down the page. Terminal tumor in brain. Amanda stopped. She looked at Scott; she looked at the chart; she looked at Scott again. "Get some rest Scott. You need it." ******************************************************************************* (Flashback) A girl stood in the doorway of her mother's room. Her mother was weeping. "If only it wasn't Elizabeth. If only-oh?I would give anything for her to get well again." "Shhhh?Elizabeth might hear." Said the woman next to her. "It's alright. You still have Serena. Remember. She's your daughter too." "Oh I do wish. I do wish, it was Serena who had the disease instead. I do wish it was Serena who was going to die, instead of Elizabeth. I do wish Serena would die! I do wish Serena would die!!!!" The girl turned away from the door, the cup of soup she'd had ready for her mother, dropped from her hands and smashed into pieces at her feet. Than she ran. (End of Flashback) Those dream again, that memory. That same dream that had daunted her night after night ever since she had woken up from her coma. Reluctantly, Serena reached out her hand and touched the scar. Where did this come from? She wondered. Too much of her life was missing and yet, perhaps sometimes ignorance was bliss. After all, the fewer you know, the happier you are. It all made sense to Serena. Sometimes not knowing the outcome of something can make life a lot easier to live. Once again she left her room and tiptoed out into the cool night air. "Oh god. Who am I?" Serena whispered "Can you at least tell me that." The night offers no answer. Tears brimmed at the corner of Serena's eyes. "Why is this happening to me god? Why me? Why is the whole world still spinning when my world has ceased." Serena collapsed onto the grass and finally the tears fell. "Hey!" It was Darien. In a matter of seconds he would be standing next to her. Serena lifted her head and quickly wiped away her tears. "What?" "Nothing. Just wondering what you were doing with your head buried in the grass." Serena's lips trembled. "No-thing much." His expression changed, and perhaps, just perhaps there was a note of anxiety in his voice. "You've been having those dreams again, haven't you?" Serena pondered upon answering. She didn't want Darien to think she was a crybaby, but sometimes, perhaps the truth does help ease the pain. Serena nodded her head. "The people in my dreams-they were hurting me." Darien moved closer "Why? Why were they hurting you?" Serena shook her head. She didn't know. Nothing made sense. "I don't know." Her voice choked on the sudden surge of tears that had rushed to her eyes. "You know Darien. Sometimes, I feel, as though, I should be thanking the person who ran me over for what he did. My life seemed so much harder to live before than." The world stood very still as Darien absorbed in Serena's words. His heart was suddenly filled with the growing desire to hug her and thank her for saying those words. It was as though a heavy burden had suddenly been lifted off his heart. "Do you really mean it?" Darien asked. Serena nodded. "Yes I do. I thank him." There was a silence. Finally Darien spoke. "Okay. Let's go out and celebrate." Serena was puzzled "Darien, it's late. And what do we have to celebrate anyway." Darien laughed. Perhaps it was him who wanted to celebrate. It seemed as though, a whole New World had been opened up to him. He shrugged "I don't know. I just feel like it." Suddenly Serena laughed. Her past didn't seem to matter anymore. What was important was that a future was waiting for her. And she couldn't let it down. "Okay. Okay. Let's go." ********************************************************************************** It was midnight when they reached the beach with their cans of beer. The night was young and the crescent moon hung low in a sky dotted with a million stars. Serena looked at the sky and sighed. Everything was too perfect. Too absolutely beautiful for the human eyes. "I feel so overwhelmed." Serena sighed. She settled down on the hardened sand and listened as the seawater washed over the rocks. Darien sat down next to her. "What? Haven't you ever seen this before?" Darien was puzzled He had laid his feet upon this beach ever since he could remember. "No. At least I don't remember doing so." Serena looked away. A large group of rough looking men sat about 300 hundred metres away from them. Darien watched her carefully. He could see that distant sadness in her eyes. The eyes that told him life were unfair. "Do you ever wonder where this came from?" Serena said suddenly as she reached up to her face and touched the scar. "I don't know. Do you ever remember getting it?" Darien drew closer to look at the scar. "It's weird. But that scar almost looks like it's been done with a sharp object. Like a knife or something. It's quite deep." Serena drew away. She didn't like the presence of another looking at her scar. It pained her. "Anyway. Let's stop talking about this." Serena decided. She took out a can of beer and opened it. "Cheers." She smiled. "To the celebration of a new life." "To the celebration of a new life." Darien agreed. Suddenly Serena jumped up. "Wait. Hold on. I've got something for you." She said and ran off towards the water edge. Darien watched as she ran and smiles. Serena amazed him. It was almost as though she didn't belong to this world. The world would be too harsh to someone as kind and vivacious as her. She wouldn't be able to survive alone. Darien knew. Serena needed someone to protect her. "Darien! Help me!" Darien jumped up and spun around. The can of beer fell from his hands and spilled at his feet. A couple of rough looking men was dragging Serena towards their car. Darien forgot everything, forgot his own safety, forgot his own life and he ran after them. "Serena!" He cried. It was only as he reached them that Darien realized that he didn't have his gun with him. He didn't hesitate though. Nothing could stop him now. He lunged at the guy holding Serena and knocked him to the ground. The men growled and swung a fist at Darien. He ducked, swung back another fist and smiled as it contracted with his nose. Suddenly Darien reared back and tumbled onto the sand. A man behind him had caught him off guard. He jumped up quickly and fights back at the man. Another kick sends him rearing back onto the sand. There were simply too many men. He couldn't fight them alone. A shower of fist rain down on Darien. as he tried his best to fight back. "Stop! Stop it!" Serena screamed. She searched desperately for help but there was no one around. She had to rely on herself now. Choosing the man nearest to her. Serena attacked. Catching him off guard, she punched him lightly across the face, pulled his hair, stuck her tongue out at him and kicked him in the groin. Hard. The man screamed in agony. Taking his chance, Darien jumped up and grabbed his ID card. "Police! Stop!" Everyone froze. "Get the hell out of here before I charge you with assaulting a cop." As soon as everyone left. Darien collapsed onto the sand. "Darien! Are you alright!" Serena ran to his side. Darien grinned and tried to sit up "Where did you get that from?" he laughed. Serena smiled "From the television. In this really cool karate movie." Darien shook his head "You watch TV too much-but" he had to agree "It did come in useful." Serena laughed. She could protect herself after all. "Oh!" She reached into her pocket. "I forgot to give you this." She held out a piece of glass she had found by the ocean. It was fashioned into the shape of a star and its edges were softened by the age of the sea. She handed it to Darien. "What's this?" Darien was puzzled. "It's something that reminds me of you." Darien was amused 'A piece of glass reminds you of me?" "It's just does. I might tell you someday." "But-" Serena stopped him with a look and helped him to his feet. "Great. Now I'll have to help you home and bandage you up and stuff. Man, this is going to be a long night?" ***************************************************************************** Darien never thought he would meet Elizabeth again. She seemed too much of a miracle to be true. It never occurred to him that, the second time they met might be marked as one of the most unforgettable days of his life. As soon as he stepped into the police station the next morning. He saw her. "I want to charge him with sexual harassment!" Recognizing the voice. Darien spun around and saw her at one of the tables talking to a cop. Studying the case carefully. Darien walked over and nudged the policeman talking to her. "Let me take the case. Tom." Seeing him, Elizabeth nodded and smiled. "Oh. You're a cop." Darien grinned. "Yeah. So what's the matter?" "This guy here." She said pointing at the man opposite her. "Pinched my butt." Darien raised his eyebrows. "Is that so?" he looked at the man. He seemed like a timid little thing. Too little to do anything, least of all harass someone sexually. Looking at his now terrified face, Darien actually felt sorry for him. The whole case was too amusing for words. "Well. You see Sir. It was an accident." The man explained. "It was really crowded on the train and my hand just touched her bottom by accident." He turned to Elizabeth "I'm sorry. Miss. Truly I am. Please don't charge me. I've got a wife and five children at home to feed." "Well you should stop having sex so much than." Elizabeth muttered under her breath. Darien turned to Elizabeth. "Well." She scowled "Oh alright. I'll let you off this time. But if I see you sexually harassing anyone again. I'll swear upon god that I will charge you!" "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you." After the man left the police station. Darien turned to Elizabeth. He was eager to find out more about this amazing woman in front of him. "So what do you do?" Elizabeth looked at him "What do you mean? What do I do?" "I mean. A job. Occupation." "Oh. Well, I used to be an actress." Darien studied her carefully "Used to be?" "Yeah well. Now I can't really do anything, can it? Not in my condition anyway." Suddenly the room seemed very quite. Darien remembered the first time they met. That untimely sorrow in her eyes had been the first thing that strucked him. How could he have forgotten? "So, can you accompany me for dinner tonight?" Elizabeth asked suddenly. Darien looked up. Surprised. She was awfully straightforward for a girl. He shrugged. "Yeah sure. My pleasure." ******************************************************************************** It was almost midnight in the hospital as Raye made her ways down the hall. It had been a long day. Because it was Saturday, there were a number of causalities concerning head injuries, which she'd had to tend to. Apart from that, a couple of student nurses had annoyed her with questions like: Where's the toilet? Where's the nearest lavatory? Where can I get to the restroom? Which were after all the same questions. She stopped at room 304 and listened for any suspicious sounds concerning spiders. There was none. Instead a loud noise. Like something falling to the ground alarmed her. She threw open the door and found Scott lying on the ground. His head clutched in his hands. "My head!" he gasped. "Help me!" Ringing the alarm for help, Raye rushed to his side. Already, Scott was loosing consciousness. Holding his head above the ground. Raye fought to keep him awake. "Stay with me Scott. Stay with me." Raye cried. Suddenly she felt a kind of sadness towards him. Even though she didn't like him very much. She didn't want him to die either. Slowly, Scott forced his eyes opened. He squinted up at her and tried to focus "Oh. It's my beautiful doctor." He muttered. Raye could see clearly that he was in great pain. "Scott. Don't fall sleep. I command you. Don't fall asleep!" Raye shouted. Already, his eyes were closing again. He's breathing was sharp and shallow. He wasn't going to make it. Raye realized. Frantically, she pressed the alarm bell again. "Scott. Open your eyes. Look at me!" Scott shuddered in her arms and Raye could feel the life draining away from him. "I'm cold." He whispered. His lips were a pale white. He trembled. Raye wrapped her arms around him. "No you're not. You're not cold. And you're not going to die either." "Man this hurts." Scott buried himself deeper into Raye's arms and trembled. "I'm cold." He repeated. His blinked as his eyes began to close again. His whole body shook as he coughed. "Hold on. Stay with me Scott." Raye commanded. She checked his pulse. They were pulsing too fast for a normal person. The doctors arrived than and Scott was wheeled out into intensive care. "It's all up to him now." The doctor said. ***************************************************************************** "So Liz-" Darien began "Can I call you that? Liz?" Elizabeth shrugged. "Sure." They had just finished dinner at a classy restaurant and were now making their way home. That night, the weather was especially windy and Elizabeth's mane of silvery blonde hair blew out behind her like a flag in the wind. Darien smiled. He had never met anyone like her before, she almost seemed too perfect to be true. Yet what was perfection? Perhaps it is all in the eye of the beholder. Yet to Darien, she was perfect. "You don't look very happy." Darien suddenly said. It was true. He could see it in her eyes. Even if it had been veiled with a mask of untimely happiness. Elizabeth laughed bitterly "You wouldn't be either if you'd had to wake up to 10 tablets and 3 injections everyday." Darien lowered his eyes to the ground "When did all this start?" "I don't know. Ever since I can remember, it's been like this. Till now, I can't even imagine a day without going through the same routine." Her voice softened as she said those last words. And Darien had to wonder if she'd ever been truly happy. The sadness in her eyes seemed almost ancient in their grief. Perhaps, up to a point where Elizabeth had to cope by masking herself until all that was left was a heart of stone. "Oh." Darien was silence. "The condition is in my heart. They tried operating on it a few times, but I almost died. And after that, they gave up operating and I had lived through all those year simply on my will to live." "You're very strong woman." Darien said. Elizabeth smiled at him. "I'd had to be. To live you'd need strength. If I hadn't held on all those years ago. I wouldn't have survived till today. And even now, I don't know when I'll have another relapse. Anything can trigger it off. Emotional or physical stress mainly." "You should be proud of yourself." And once again, Darien looked at the young woman beside him with new admiration. "Thanks. It pays to have someone stand by your side. I didn't know there was anyone left in the world for me to live for until I met you." The night grew quite as a silence lapsed between them. Darien watched as a couple of autumn leaves blew past him. Elizabeth shivered. "Cold?" Darien asked. "No." Elizabeth insisted. Darien sighed "You woman, never put on enough clothes when you leave home." Than taking off his own jacket, he laid it on Elizabeth's shoulder. "Here. I wouldn't want to carry you to hospital if you collapse." Elizabeth smiled. "Thanks." She looked around her. At the leave strewn street, at the dim street lamp and lastly at the moon as it hung low in the sky. "It's so quite, isn't it? I can't remember a night in my life when it's ever been so quite." Once again, Darien found himself watching her. Everything she said was like a miracle. Too miraculous and wonderful for the human ear. "Don't worry, Elizabeth. You will see many other nights like this." Elizabeth looked at him with new incredulity in her eyes "I hope so. I really hope so." She smiled "Anyway, thanks for taking me out to dinner tonight. I really enjoyed it. Let's hope we'll see each other again someday." They had arrived at the doorstep of her home. Darien smiled. "Don't worry. I'll make sure we will." "Good bye. Darien." "Good bye." Darien said as he watched her walk up the steps and entered her house. ********************************************************************************** It was almost midnight when Darien got home. Serena he saw was still awake as she scrolled down the screen on his computer. The light had been turned off, and the only light was the eerie glow that reflected off the screen of his computer. Perfect. Closing the door quietly behind him, Darien crept up silently behind her. Than taking of his jacket, he draped it over Serena's eyes in one simple gesture. "Arrghhhhhhhhh!" Serena leapt from her chair and punched Darien square in the stomach. The jacket still over her head. The blow was too sudden for Darien to avoid, and he doubled over in pain. "Shit. What did you do that for?" Darien groaned. "Darien?" Serena cried in amazement. She pulled the jacket off her head. As soon as Serena saw him. She became angry. "What did you do that for? You idiot! Next time you do it, I'll punch you somewhere much more painful!" "Okay, okay. I'm sorry." Darien laughed. "It is not funny! Serena exclaimed and started hitting him across the chest. "Alright. I'm sorry. Will you forgive me?" Darien asked as he rubbed his stomach painfully. "Haven't I suffered enough?" Looking at him like this, Serena couldn't bring herself to stay mad. "Oh alright." She returned her attention to the computer and closed her eyes. "What are you doing?" Darien was puzzled. "Shhh. I'm making a wish." She said. Darien looked closer at the screen and realized that it was a chain letter. "But it's just a chain letter. Things like that never come true." he said. Serena opened her eyes again. "I don't care. As long as there is a chance, even if it's one in a million. I've got to get hold of it." Darien looked at her with new admiration. All of a sudden, he realized that he had two of the world's greatest woman by his side. End of Chapter 2-------------------------------------------------------------- More on Serena and her past.
