He cried desperately. Serena felt a lump come into her throat. She couldn't answer. And he didn't ask anymore. Ignoring Serena, he cradled Elizabeth's head in his arms. Slowly, Serena stood up and backed away from the two figures. Tears pricked painfully in her eyes. And Serena realized at that very moment, how very hard it was to stop one's self from crying. Suddenly Serena felt a sharp object against her temple. "Don't move." A male voice said. It was Julian. Serena froze. "No." she gasped. The gun pushed harder into her temple "Shut up. Or I'll shoot you dead." Julian growled by her ear. All the policeman's eyes were on them now. But not Darien's. Serena watched hopelessly as he cleaned the wisps of dark blonde hair from Elizabeth's sweat-matted face. The scene hurt her. She'd never imagine that once Elizabeth was in the picture, Darien would forget totally about her. Serena's thought, she had actually meant something to Darien. But she'd been wrong. She hadn't meant anything. Julian coughed than, and that surprised Serena but than she remembered that Julian was very sick. The gun still to her temple, he winds his arms tightly around Serena's neck and made for the lift. Serena trembled. She was afraid, terrified. She didn't want to die just like this. It wasn't fair. No matter what happened in the past, no matter what her future would be, no matter how unhappy she was now. Serena didn't want to die. For Serena, dying was too cruel a word. "Oh Darien." She whispered under her breath, so no one heard. Julian pulled her closer. Almost choking her in his grasp. Serena let a strangled cry. Finally Darien noticed. "Serena!" he yelled. He carried Elizabeth's body to a far away corner and ran back, his gun out and pointing towards them. "Let go of her right now!" he shouted, moving closer in the process. Julian's hold tightened around Serena neck, and it was all Serena could do to stop herself from screaming. "Don't come any closer!" Julian cried "Or I'll shoot." Serena began to feel angry with Julian. He had no right, killing innocent people like this. He was ruining everyone's lives as well as his. Than she felt his tears against her cheeks. Her heart softened. "Julian." She began. "Why are you doing this?" Julian looked down at her and Serena saw the tears in his eyes. She watched in his eyes, as he battled with himself. "Please Julian. Why are you doing this?" He shook her violently "Because I'm going to die! Because it's not fair! Because them-" he pointed at the wounded doctors, nurses and pregnant women on the ground. "They have a place in this world. They are healthy and happy. And them, those women over there is going to have her beautiful babies while my wife and baby is lying dead beneath the soils!" he screamed. "Oh Julian. Please stop now before you regret it for the rest of your life." Serena whispered softly. Julian laughed bitterly "Ha! The rest of my life! I don't have much longer to live though, do it? Tell me nurse. I'm going to die soon. Aren't I? That's what all the doctors and nurses are telling me. That I was going to die soon." He pulled her closer. "Why don't you tell me that too, nurse. Tell me that I'm going to die soon too." "Julian-" Serena began. "Let her go!" It was Darien. He was growing frantic. The sight of Serena's tiny body in that mad man's arms was making Darien feel sick. "Drop your weapon and let her go!" Tears in her eyes, Serena allowed herself a longing glance in Darien's direction. He stood there so bravely, just like he'd been when she'd first met him. He could easily be shot from where he was standing. But he hadn't cared. *Because I had meant something.* Serena thought, allowing herself a moment of fantasy before she returned to reality again. A loud clatter brought Serena out of her thoughts. Huh? Than, Serena realized. Julian had dropped his gun. New hope sprung into Serena's heart. Maybe everything was going to be all right after all. She threw a hopeful glance at Darien's direction. Than she saw something that made her feel sick all over. Julian had brought out a syringe instead. Serena watched in renew terror as the needle glinted sharply before her eyes. Her heart beated even faster when she realized that the inside of the syringe was filled with a clear transparent substance. "No." She breathed. Her knees felt weak. "No!" It was Darien. "No! Don't!" "What do you want us to do?" Serena recognized the voice, it was detective Nicholas Fox. She'd met him last time at the held up of the bank. Julian shook his head "Nothing. Just stay away from us." Darien dropped his gun. "Darien! No!" The other cops were shouting, as they beckoned him back. Darien ignored them. He's heart was pounding furiously but he didn't care. All that was on his mind now was to get Serena out of this danger. No matter how much it costs him, he has to pay Serena back the life he'd owed her. He couldn't stand it if she got hurt again. And it wasn't just that he had to pay her back, he cared about her. "Come on, Julian. No one's going to hurt you again. Just hand me that needle and let her go. My friends here." He motioned to the other cops. "Will let you go." Darien said, he's eyes fixed on Julian. He moved closer. The hand on Serena's neck tightened. "No! Stay away! You're all liars! All of you!" Serena watched as Darien's jaws tightened "Alright. Just let her go, and I'll be you hostage instead." He said in a very calm voice. Serena gasped "Darien!" She wanted to tell him to stop, but the arms around her throat stopped her from yelling. Darien moved closer "Come on. I won't lie to you. Just let the girl go, and take me instead." Serena struggled to shake her head frantically "No, Darien! Don't be stupid! You'll be ki-" but before she could scream anymore words out, she felt Julian dragging her towards the lift again. "Shut up! All of you! You're all liars, every single one of you! You think you are so good just because you've got a place in society! But I'm not going to allow that!" Julian was screaming. "I don't want to live anymore and this nurse here will die with me!" Serena screamed as she saw the syringe shoot straight towards her. Than, all of a sudden, she felt a powerful force as she was knocked to the ground. Darien had lunged at Julian and was now wrestling him on the ground. "Darien!" Serena screamed, as she watches the two figures rolling around on the ground. Than there was a loud shot from the group of policemen and Serena watched shocked as a dark pool of red started to form from underneath Julian. "Darien!" Serena cried finally and rushed over to where Darien was struggling to stand up. "Are you alright?" she asked frantically, searching frantically for any possible damage. He smiled weakly "Yeah, sure Serena. I'm alright." Sweat gathered on the corner of his forehead. Tears gathered in Serena's eyes. "You saved my life, Darien." "No probl-" He stumbled suddenly. "Darien!" Serena cried, alarmed. She watched in horror as Darien fell to his feet and rolled onto the ground. "The needle! Did it-?" But she couldn't utter the last words. Did it go in? "Don't worry, I'll be okay." Darien was saying. But he wasn't sure anymore. Because the needle had went in. He'd felt the sharp painful prick of the needle as it penetrated through his clothing, and into his skin. But Serena was okay and that was all that mattered. And he was awfully tired. His eyelids felt terribly heavy, and it was all he could do to stop himself from closing his eyes. It was harder to breathe too. He sucked in a long raspy breath. "Don't close your eyes, Darien! Please don't!" Serena cried as she cradles his head in her arms. She watched as he struggled with himself to stay conscious. She felt him tremble in her arms. No, please no! Serena screamed inside. Please don't take him away. "I'm tired." Darien whispered softly. His voice barely audible. "I want to go to sleep." He drew in another breath. "No! Don't go to sleep! Stay with me Darien! Your friends are getting the doctor now! Stay awake!" Serena commanded. Tears ran down her cheeks and trickled onto Darien's face. But he wasn't listening anymore. His eyes closed and his body went limp in Serena's arms. "Serena!" It was Elizabeth. She was conscious. ***************************************************************************** It was midnight by the time Julian's case was solved and concluded. Reports from the police had been taken, evidence had been collected and comforting words had been spoken. Julian's tale seemed to have bought an unexpected silence to the hospital. The police moved about quietly as they collected the bodies of the victims. A total of 11 lives have been lost. Six of those had been pregnant women, the rest were nurses and doctors and a few unlucky wanderers. A few survivors were still being examined, some had been announced in critical condition, others like Serena and Elizabeth were let off after being assured that they were okay. No one asked about Julian's condition but Serena knew he had been still alive when they'd carried him away. She remembered his loathsome words. She'd didn't think anyone who heard them could ever forget those words. They were a lesson to humans. "..You're all liars, every single one of you! You think you are so good just because you've got a place in society! But I'm not going to allow that!" He had screamed as he pointed his gun at the whole world. Who was to blame? No one dared answer the unavoidable question. Humans were strange, proud creatures and often admitting to something they'd wrong been the hardest part of living. Sometimes only when the inevitable had been done do humans begin to regret. Now Serena and Elizabeth were waiting outside the emergency room for news of Darien's condition. Serena sat at one side of the room and Elizabeth said on the other. None of them had said anything to each other. Finally, Elizabeth looked up. "It's been a while, hasn't it." She said softly, looking at Serena the whole time. Serena nodded slowly. "Yeah, a year." Her sentence stopped there. Serena didn't know what else she could possibly say to Elizabeth at this moment. "Why didn't you come back?" Serena looked away. This had been the question, she'd been dreading to answer. "Sometimes, certain things are best left in the past." She smiled suddenly "I've been given a chance to start all over again. You know I can't let go of that choice." Elizabeth got up and went over to sit next o Serena. She layed a hand on Serena's knee, as if to reassure her. "But we're a family!" Serena sighed and shook her head. "No, Elizabeth. I have no family. She was a mother to you. I can't remember ever having a mother." Serena said softly as she remembered her mother's words. She knows she'll never forget them. Elizabeth shifted in her sit "But Serena-" she began. Serena stopped her "No Elizabeth." She looked up and took a deep breath. "You'll never understand what it'll be like not having any love in your life. Sometimes-" Serena stopped. Not knowing if she could go on. Finally though, she did. "Being hurt inside-" she placed a hand to her heart "Can be a lot more painful than being hurt physically." Elizabeth laughed suddenly. Bitterly. "And you think I haven't suffered?" she laughed again. And Serena wondered again, if she'd underestimated Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a strong woman. Serena had known that all along, but had I? Serena thought. Had I thought too much about myself? "Elizabeth, you know I did-" Serena began, trying to defend for herself. Elizabeth shook her head "No, Serena you did mean it." She said softly. "You think the whole world should feel sorry for you, don't you? Well Serena, you're not the only lost soul out in this world." Elizabeth's voice grew louder "Do you know how it felt waking up every day to know that you were dying? Do you know how it felt to have the whole world feign love at your feet, when you knew that true love reaches beyond just the surface?" Serena sighed. Elizabeth was right. She'd been selfish, she'd only thought about herself. Self-pity, it was a hateful word. Serena sighed again. A long deep sigh. "I'm sorry." She said very softly. "What?" Elizabeth was surprised. "I'm sorry." Serena repeated. Elizabeth laughed suddenly "I didn't want you to say 'sorry' Serena. You know I don't." she sighed. "Okay fine than, Serena. If you don't want to go back, I trust your decision. But-can you just tell me-how was this year past?" she asked finally. So Serena retraced her footsteps of how she was hit by a car and lost her memory, how kindly the people at the hospital had treated her and finally how she came to meet Darien. "I still can't remember everything. There's still a big part of my memory missing and I don't even if I'll ever remember them again. But I guess, I don't really mind." Serena smiled. "You know Elizabeth, I love my life now. It's full of everything I'd never known before." "Will you ever come back?" Elizabeth asked suddenly. Serena shook her head slowly. "No Elizabeth. I don't want to remember anymore than I've already remembered." "Good luck Serena." She smiled warmly and all of a sudden, Serena remembered the fun they'd used to have when they were kids. Frolicking around in what had been their childhood. Elizabeth's garden; my jungle. Serena thought, remembering suddenly the same words from a book she'd read years ago. Her thoughts were interrupted suddenly as the door to the emergency room burst open and a doctor walked out. Both Serena and Elizabeth leapt to their feet. 'Is he alright?' The doctor smiled warmly and Serena knew at once that everything was going to be alright. "He's sleeping now, but when he wakes up, he should be just fine." The doctor said. "He was lucky, he was in the hospital when it happened. If he hadn't gotten medical attention straight away than?" he's voice trailed off but Serena knew what he had been about to say. They all knew. If Darien hadn't been given medical attention straightaway, than he would have died. "Can we go in to see him?' Serena asked eagerly. The doctor shook his head. "No. Not now, there's nothing you can do for him now. Just let him sleep and tomorrow you can come again to visit him." Serena wanted to argue, but before she could say anything. Elizabeth said "Please. I want to be with him when he wakes up." The doctor sighed. "Alright. Don't try to wake him though, he needs all the rest he can get." He said. "And you get some sleep too." He said to Elizabeth. Serena turned away than. She'd wanted to be there when Darien wakes up, but he had Elizabeth and Serena knew that at the moment, she was the only one he wanted. Slowly, she turned and headed back home. ***************************************************************************** Serena couldn't sleep that night. Somehow, drifting off into slumber seemed impossible. She hated that feeling; it made her feel helpless and alone because that seemingly orderly world of hers has been turned upside down. She'd read a book once. It was called Night Train. The train at night for people. It had said. For all the ones who couldn't get to sleep, who lay awake pondering their existence in the world, who had locks in their heart. Great big locks just like hers. Serena sighed. Was that her life? Was that the life she'd wanted? No, it wasn't. She didn't want to live like that at all. Long ago or so it seemed, she'd often dreamt of life as a heroine in a sentimental world, fighting for justice, falling in love with a knight in shining armor and living life to the fullest. That was the life she'd dreamt of before she met Darien. Now, that dream rise as ash pellets in another world. One she no longer belonged to. Once, Serena remembered. She'd had a late shift at the hospital and midnight finds her looking down at the railway tracks while she waited for her train. The train at night for people. For all the ones who couldn't get to sleep, who lay awake pondering their existence in the world, who had locks in their heart. Great big locks just like hers. The book had said. The author was brilliant. She or he had painted that picture deep into her heart. A couple was arguing behind her and Serena remembered smiling at the sounds of their voices as it echoed through the quite dimness of the train station. Than she had looked up from the railway tracks and across to the other platform. A guy was standing there alone. They were separated by two platforms yet it seemed as though their world had been separated by a lifetime. Did he have great big locks in his heart too? Serena didn't know, but she felt immediately a bond that formed between she and that guy. And Serena had remembered thinking to herself. If I jumped onto the platform, all those differences would fade away and he'd jump down too to save me. But that hadn't been so. His train had came and when the train drew away from the platform, he stood there no longer. What a sentimental fool she'd been. Reality was reality. You couldn't change that and expect life to proceed as you wished. The higher you climb, the harder you fall. It all made sense to her. Yet now, Serena didn't know what she wanted anymore. Perhaps all alone, all she'd ever wanted was a simple life. A simple dream. A dream in which, she'd love a man and that man will love her and they'd be happy. That's all she wanted she'd never dared ask for too much. Yet, someone had told her once that simple dreams are sometime the hardest to come true. The flat seemed big and empty without Darien. Serena was afraid. Had her life always been like this? So big yet so empty? And now, with Elizabeth in the picture she knew Darien would never belong to her again. Heck, he'd never belonged to her in the first place. He was a stranger perhaps. But she had cared for him, in a strange sort of way. All of a sudden, Serena found herself hating Elizabeth for taking Darien away from her. Yet again, Serena was afraid of the word hate, she was afraid of hurting people, afraid of the inhuman creature hate could turn her into. Love was stronger than hate. That's what she'd always believed in. Could she possibly turn hatred into love? To love Elizabeth as a sister? Serena didn't know and dawn was breaking. Sighing, Serena pulled herself out of bed and another day of work began. ************************************************************************* "Elizabeth!" Darien cried out aloud in his sleep. He shifted restlessly in his bed and his eyelids flickered as if he was having a nightmare. "Serena!" A hand reached out to calm him. "I'm alright, Darien." Said a gentle voice. Groaning, Darien slowly opened his eyes, squinting at the tired face of Elizabeth in front of him. "Elizabeth-" he began. "Shh?" Elizabeth whispered, holding her fingers to his lips. "Rest." Darien ignored this. "Are you alright?" Elizabeth nodded reassuringly "Yes. Of course, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't okay, would I?" Sighing with relieve, Darien let his eyes close once more. Than remembering something important, he opened them again. "Is Serena-" he asked. Elizabeth looked at him for a long moment and finally she nodded "She's fine. Don't worry." She said. "Where is she now?" Darien asked. "She's back at home." Darien swallowed back a wave of disappointment. "So you've met?" Elizabeth sighed and looks away and suddenly a ripple of sadness washed over her. "Yes, we've met." He nodded slowly and reached for Elizabeth's hand; he squeezed it. "Don't ever leave me Elizabeth." Elizabeth smiled and nodded; yet inside she wasn't so sure. Death was inevitable, and in her condition. Elizabeth didn't know how long she'd be able to hang onto before death will engulf her future. ************************************************************************** "I'll be out here waiting." Serena paused, "Good luck, Raye." She looked down at Scottt's ashen face. "And good luck Scottt." Outside the hospital, the rain pelted down on the quite streets of Tokyo. It was early evening but even than, in the normally busy streets of Japan, the traffic was beginning to thin already. Tonight was the night of Scottt's operation. She watched as Scottt was wheeled into the operating room-he was still unconscious. Inside the operating room, Raye and Joanne Nagano, a fellow doctor was getting ready for the surgery. Dr Hilton had informed her at the last minute that Joanne, a renowned brain surgeon would be helping her during the operation. "Ready?" Joanne asked. Raye nodded, watching as Joanne exercised his craft with precision and very little humanity. She had the techniques, but no heart. She began first by cutting away his hair. "Hell of a way to live like this." Joanne remarked all of a sudden. Raye blinked. What did she mean? She didn't think more of it though-than it didn't make much sense to her, instead she sighed and looked down at Scottt again. "You're going to be okay." She looked over at Joanne and they both nodded. Than with one last look at Scottt. Raye took the tiny drill Joanne had handed her, and began. For the next eight hours. Raye and Joanne worked quietly and in unison. It was close to four in the morning when Scottt's body was finally wheeled out of the operating theatre and back to intensive care. Joanne came out first and nodded at Serena. Raye came out minutes later looking exhausted but satisfied. "The operation was successful." Raye smiled and a weight seemed to have lifted off the heart of everyone present. Serena squealed in delight and wrapped her arms around Raye. "That's great! You're the best!" She cried. Raye nodded her head, too tired to put on any act of modesty. The operation had been difficult. Anything could happen in the operating theatre, for centuries it'd been a medical stage pheromone and today it had been her chance to perform. She'd almost lost him at one point but his will and her skills had saved him. Perhaps they'd been lucky, but Scottt hadn't let go and he had lived through into a new future. End of Chapter 5------------------------------------------------------- Next chapter is basically feelings and stuff, between Darien and Serena mostly. Some scenes between Raye and Scott. But not much scenes with Elizabeth in it, so all of you should be happy, cause i have received several letters that told me they hated Elizabeth. hehehe:) she's not a bad person really, but i guess because we all want Serena and Darien together, and she is the third person in their relationship, so we ended up hating her. She's a really noble person though in reality. Of course i like SErena much more. Oh and to everyone who has written to me regarding the SErena/Darien/Elizabeth relationship. Well let me just tell you that, Darien does love Serena in the end. but he did love Elizabeth once. However he's love for Serena was muc deeper, although he had great admiration in Elizabeth. People who hates Elizabeth will be happy to know that she does die in the end. But whether Serena and Darien will get together is another matter (even if they did love each other) anyway, that's all for now folks! Write me some EMAILS!!! I WANT MORE EMAILS!! Alice P.S And please everyone! Visit my homepage and sign my guestbook! It would be very nice :) http://www.moonlightdestiny1.homestead.com/home.html
