AN: This is my first fanfic. Please be gentle with the Flames. This story is written following the North American Animated series, yes, perhaps inferior to the Japanese Version, but it's the only version that I'm exposed to. The Only major change I've made to the anime plot is that Zoycite is a man. Oh, and just so you know, this is not so Much about Sailor Moon as it is about the rest of the Sailors. Disclaimer: This is my first disclaimer. Of course I don't Own Sailor Moon, and I'm kind of glad I don't, because the Power would corrupt me beyond all repair. I am just Borrowing the ideas of Naoko Takeuchi because they're Better than anything I could think up. A Shared Past-Loves Lost By Ahn Na Blue (Rated PG) The fire priestess knelt slowly, as if she were feeling the tests of age on her joints. The temple was quiet, and it was far past midnight. A shiver caught her around the shoulders although the sacred fire shone brightly before her, coloring the darkened shrine with a dancing mellow light. She hugged herself tightly and peered into the blaze, but afraid that she would see dark eyes staring back at her, she looked away and busied herself with the tray sitting beside her on the mats. They would be here soon, she knew. She could feel their mind link pulling taut; it was part of what had awakened her, but not all. Mina would be the first to arrive, living nearby, and the tea was already steeping. The foods of comfort would be ready when her friends slid open the door, one by one. They would all need it, after the horrors they had seen, the hot tea would cauterize their raw hearts. "It couldn't have happened that way,"Raye thought with resolve. "I must be wrong." Behind her, the door to the shrine slid open softly. She heard the scuffle of shoes removed and feet padding slowly to kneel beside her. "Raye-" The raven-haired girl shook her head gently for silence as she poured steaming broth from the pot. "We'll know soon enough, Mina." She could not bring herself to meet her blonde friend's eyes. There was a brokenness in Mina's voice that Raye hated to hear. As the two girls sipped and waited, Raye fell back into the memory of her dream. ******************************************************** The palace of the moon was a wonder of the galaxy, a place where alabaster walls fell into sparkling midnight waters of magnificent fountains. The courtyard was lush, the cobblestone paths glittered, and the light was always silver. A fine mist hung about the palace parapets, as if to guard the inhabitants. Queen Serenity was entertaining diplomats from foreign planets, in hopes of gaining allies in the fight with the evil queen of the Negaverse. The royal guard surrounded the throne room, to make sure that the party inside would not be disturbed. Prince Darien was on one knee, swearing an oath of loyalty to the moon kingdom, and although his head was slightly bowed, his eyes never left those of his princess, his betrothed. Queen Serenity was satisfied with his oath, and equally satisfied with the emotions she felt coursing between the Prince and her daughter, Serena. She stole a sideways glance at the Princess, and despite the seriousness of the situation, felt a smile curl on her lips. Her heart was full as she looked at her daughter; she knew that Serena was so in love, and so proud of her Prince. IN fact, no one was displeased with the match her daughter had made. Behind her, her guardians, The Sailor Scouts, stood vigilantly and dutifully. As Prince Darien took leave of the royal pair to train for the battlefield, his armored escort of Generals nodded to the Scouts respectfully. The Queen smiled. It was also well known that the Sailor Scouts and the Prince's Generals were very close indeed. *********************************************************** A knock at the shrine door snapped the priestess out of her reverie. "Raye?" a soft voice wondered, "Are you awake? I think something has happened." Raye gracefully lifted herself from the floor and slid open the door to reveal Amy, cheeks flushed and gripping her blue sweater tightly around her. There was a sharp intake of breath when she saw Mina already there, the sound someone makes when they see something expected, but not hoped for. Large flakes of snow had begun falling slowly outside, and she shook sleet and water droplets from her blue hued hair as she stepped inside. "I didn't know if I should come," Amy stated. "It's so late and I don't know if this qualifies as Sailor business." She smiled shakily at Mina, who held a cup out to her. Raye's eyes went dark as she prophesied. "Lita will be here in a few minutes." ********************************************************* Four couples walked slowly along the darkened courtyard pathways. Each person drug their feet, wanting the night to go on indefinitely. Arms were linked and quiet whispers of endearments spoken. They were the guardians, but for the moment their duties could be forgotten, as they knew their Princess was safely inside the palace with her Prince. "Zoycite, I worked up a profile of the Shadow Warriors on my microcomputer," Amy said, speaking softly, as always. "They are just as strong as we thought. I don't want you to take any risks on Earth. Stay close to the other Generals and don't forget that-" She was cut short by a finger to her lips and an arm that held her tightly to his chest. "Don't worry, Little Genius," he assured her gently, and planted a small kiss on her forehead. Gradually, the furrow in her brow lessened, and she gave a small smile. "Will you be back in time for the ball?" "I wouldn't miss it," he promised. "Will you wear the pearl barrettes I got for you?" Amy only smiled and rested her head on his shoulder as they strolled. Ahead of them, Lita and Mina gazed up at the glowing blue orb of the Earth. "When I think of what's happening there," Lita began, picturing the frightened faces of Earthling children as they watched their home planet battle the scourge of the Negaverse. She closed her eyes and shuddered. "We're all in such danger," Mina said sadly. "Even the moon. Oh Malachite, why do you have to go to Earth?" The sensitive blonde turned fearfully into his arms, and he stroked her hair. "It is my duty, my love," he soothed, "You know that. But I will be back on the moon before you know it, to defend by your side." Mina raised her head to look into his steel blue eyes. "Promise me," she begged, and received a smile and a gloved hand upon her cheek. "I promise." Lita's hands clenched suddenly to fists. "The question isn't why should they go to Earth," she insisted, "it is why aren't we going with them!" Neflite's arms were strong around her. "You know you are needed here to protect Princess Serena." Lita's green eyes flashed with frustration. Neflite was quick to add,"Besides, we are only going to control the threat to Earth and to support Prince Darien. If I brought you, you'd probably track down the Negaverse Queen and electrocute her until her hair was charred black. We are still trying to avoid all out war." Lita smirked and twisted to run her fingers through his walnut brown hair. "But I do fight best when I'm along side you," she sighed. "I'll be back soon enough," he smiled. Raye and Jadeite had taken a seat near the rose garden fountain. The girl's arms were crossed against her chest and the mood was tense. "You know I hate it when you have to go away like this!" She snapped. "It's only for a little while, and you're being unreasonable,"Jadeite countered softly, trying to control the situation. "UNREASONABLE?! IT'S DANGEROUS! And I know what you're going to say, you're going to say duty this and duty that, but I don't care! I don't care about duty! I've had enough duty to last me my entire life!" Raye looked down, hiding the welling tears beneath layers of jet-black hair. "I'm sensing something really bad about this Jadeite." "And I trust your intuition," he said, plucking the reddest rose from a nearby bush, stripping it of thorns, and tucking it behind her ear. "But I will return safely, in time for the ball tonight, with Serena's Prince in tow." He lifted her chin and gave a dazzling smile. Raye took a deep breath, and kissed him with all her hope, all her prayers that her feeling was wrong. Losing him she could not bear. Four princesses received promises of love that night. And none would be fulfilled. ********************************************************** Lita had arrived as expected, breathing quickly from her run to the temple. She had removed her green parka and thrown it angrily into the corner with the other girls' jackets. Now they sat in a circle, hands nervously grasping a cup of tea, glances darting quickly from one to the others, each not wanting to say what they remembered. ********************************************************* The ballroom was filled with milling people, dancing, laughing, and sipping drinks. On the edge of it all stood four young girls harnessed with the responsibility of a kingdom. Each was in formal dress, Mina in princess cut yellow taffeta, Lita in back slit emerald green velvet, and Amy with her powder blue bodiced dress with a flowing petticoated skirt, pearl barrettes in her hair. Each stood proudly, and with an alert eye scanned the ballroom. Raye stood a bit apart from the group, more nervous than the rest, in floor length scoop necked red silk. Lita felt her friend's worry and reached out slowly to squeeze her hand. Raye smiled weakly, and as she glanced across the room her eyes lit up. Four tall shadows had appeared in the doorway, and in stepped Neflite, Zoycite, Malachite, and Jadeite, in full military dress. The princesses waited silently, and were each swept onto the dance floor, relieved, smiles given freely from their lips. The musicians played well that night, helping the people of the moon to forget their treacherous situation, to free their hearts from worry. "Where is the Prince?" Amy asked Zoycite, slipping her arms around his neck. Zoycite gave a worried look around the room, and tensed up nervously. Satisfied, his eyes returned to the questioning girl. "With his Princess, of course." And then the room stopped. A wide circle opened up in the floor as Serena and Darien entered, dancing gracefully. The music played only for them, a couple in love facing danger. Darien never noticed his vanquished Generals standing amongst the crowd. His eyes and heart were for Serena that night. "WE'RE UNDER ATTACK! LEAVE THE PALACE AND ARM YOURSELVES! WE NEED EVERYONE TO FIGHT!" The ballroom erupted in chaos as the two advising felines of the Moon Kingdom, Luna and Artemis, ran through the doorway, shouting their warnings. Panicking people scattered, streaming through the doors. "Quickly!" Malachite shouted to the four girls,"To the private armory! We have hidden special provisions there!" The Generals motioned with their arms, guiding them towards the back exit. "WAIT!" Amy yelled. "Where is the Princess?!" "She is with the Prince. She'll be safe for now. Come on, you heard the cats, you're needed to fight!" Zoycite was insistent as he began to push Amy through the doorway. The girls exchanged glances, then nodded. "MARS POWER!" "VENUS POWER!" "JUPITER POWER!" "MERCURY POWER!" And then the Sailor Scouts were running down the long marble corridor towards the armory, the General following close behind. The armory was a large, granite-enforced dome used as a safety shelter and for weapons storage. The echoes resonated from the walls as the doors were thrust open and four sailor suited warriors rushed in. The room was empty. "Where are your provisions?" Venus wondered aloud. "Malachite, what's going on?" A chill crept up their backs as the Generals swung the doors shut behind them. Eyes turned to hate. "Fools!" Malachite bellowed, "There are no provisions! You are the strongest warriors of the Moon Kingdom and Beryl, Queen of the Negaverse, OUR Queen, sent us to destroy you!" The Sailor Scouts gasped collectively. "Neflite," Sailor Jupiter pleaded, "you can't mean it. We mean so much to each other." Neflite only smirked. "Me? A champion of the Negaverse in love with a Sailor Failure? You're pathetic. And after tonight, you and your beloved moon will be no more." Jupiter stepped back involuntarily, stung. "Traitor," she whispered, shaking her head in disbelief. Sailor Mercury was typing rapidly into her computer. "I knew it! she declared triumphantly. "Zoycite, you've been brainwashed somehow. You've got to try to snap out of it. According to my calculations-" "SILENCE!" Malachite screamed, and Mercury bit back her words. Each Sailor looked into her lover's eyes and saw nothing but hate reflected back. Hate, and a lifetime of memories erased. Their hearts broke, and tears pressed against their throats. Please, Mars thought, please, don't make me do this. Don't-. She looked up and saw the four men dressed in the gray caped uniforms of the Negaverse, armed with a sword and shield, ready to attack. She inhaled deeply. "Jadeite!" she cried. "Listen to me! You love me. I know you don't remember, but you have to try. Think Jadeite! Remember what we have together! Remember the day when we snuck away from training to spend the day alone?" She began to walk slowly towards him. "We danced under the blue light of the Earth and you told me that I was the beauty of your soul." Her voice caught in her throat, and silver tears began to slide down her cheeks. "Please!" she cried desperately. "I know you can't hurt me. I know some part of you remembers how much we've shared. I love you Jadeite." Jadeite's eyes had been downcast beneath the fall of his blonde hair. But as Mars stopped to stand before him, his eyes rose to meet hers. Something in them flickered, a brief memory of lying in a pod of dark energy, of an evil red haired woman standing above him. "Raye," he whispered, and hope sprang eagerly into her eyes. Then the dark power surged. The forceball of energy that flew from his hand sent Sailor Mars flying into the sloped wall of the dome with a sickening thud, and she slid into a small heap without a scream. I can't, she thought, closing her eyes against the pain, I can't I can't I can not do this. She felt her friends' eyes upon her, each too shocked and hurt to offer any help. They would look to her, as they often did, to give them strength. She clenched her eyes tightly and thought of Jadeite's smiling face. 'You are the beauty of my soul,' he had said. 'My only treasure.' And then the Soldier of Mars swallowed her tears and silenced her heart, inhaling deeply for a mighty scream: "PROTECT OUR PRINCESS!" She looked up to see the resolve come into to eyes of her friends. Mars leapt to her feet. The Generals crouched and began to growl as beams smashed, fire ignited, bubbles blasted, and thunder crashed. "TRAITOR!" Jupiter screamed again and again, angry tears threatening to spill. They fought bravely, despite the weight in their chests, blinking away tears, gritting their teeth. They fought against men they had trusted to try and save their way of life. No one saw the Sailor Scouts fall, one by one, at the hands of their loves. No one heard their cries of disbelief as they watched each other perish. And not one of them shed a final tear as their world crashed down around them. ********************************************************** "It is definitely the same dream," Lita declared solemnly. "I wonder what it all means," Mina said between sips of tea. Raye shook her head quickly. "No Lita. It wasn't just a dream. It was a genuine memory of our past." The girls' brows furrowed, not wanting to hear out loud what they had all suspected. "Oh, Raye, are you sure?" "I didn't want to think so, but that fact that we all had the identical dream doesn't leave much room for doubt. Besides, the emotional intensity was unlike any other dream I've had." Lita stood up suddenly, hands clenched to fists. "You're wrong. It's just the Negaverse messing with our heads." The tall brunette began a quick, worried pace back and forth. "Lita," Amy interjected, "Luna did say that our memories of the past would eventually surface completely." "I don't care what Luna said. This was just a stupid dream. A dumb nightmare that's keeping me up so I'll fail my geometry test tomorrow." "But-" "NO, AMY!" Lita shouted. "There are no buts because this was just a dream. Pizza after midnight, subliminal messages, mass hypnosis. IT'S NOT THE TRUTH!" She paused to look at her friends, breathing in gasps, her eyes glossy with desperate tears. "It can't be true, it can't be, because no one I loved that much could ever-" her voice hitched painfully as the tears escaped. "IT'S NOT FAIR!" she wailed, hugging her arms across her chest and crumpling to the floor. "It's not fair." Mina reached out to cradle the head of her broken friend. Tears were flowing freely from each of their eyes as they sat together. "We'll never get them back," Mina sighed, looking to the ceiling, trying to hold her voice steady, trying to be brave. Her words came out in a breathy torrent. "We'll never have a second chance." She thought of the last days of the battle with Beryl. She remembered the relief she had felt when Sailor Moon had killed Malachite, and her face crumpled. Amy, for once, did not search her microcomputer for some explanation, only knelt quietly, lip quivering as she asked to no one in particular: "Will we tell Serena?" Raye thought once more of Jadeite's smiling face, his soft, mocking laugh, and the glint in his dark eyes. She thought of her meatball-haired friend, asleep now in Darien's arms. "No," she said strongly, "The Princess has her Prince. This is ours to share." Tears continued into the night, as four young girls, forced to shoulder the weight of the world, mourned the loss of love and lives past. Behind them, the Sacred Fire raged. The End. So there it is. It's the first thing I've written in a long time. Email me at ahnnablue@hotmail.com. If I get enough flames I'll probably stop writing. Death threats will have the same effect, but they are not appreciated unless they are highly entertaining. Thanks for reading.
