I know I don?t claim ownership to it but I wonder how many of you have even heard of it before. The Truth of Endymion and Serenity. The myth, ?Endymion?: He was a youth of surpassing beauty and that was the cause of is singular fate. Endymion the shepherd, As his flock he guarded, She, the Moon, Selene, Saw him, loved him, sought him, Coming down from heaven To the glade on Latmus, Kissed him, lay beside him. Blessed is his fortune. Evermore he slumbers, Tossing not nor turning, Endymion the shepherd. He never woke to see the shining silvery form bending over him. In all the stories about him he sleeps forever, immortal, but never conscious. Wondrously beautiful he lies on the mountain-side, motionless and remote as if in death, but warm and living, and night after night the Moon visits him and covers him with her kisses. It is said that this magic slumber was her doing. She lulled him to sleep so that she might always find him and caress him as she pleased. But it is said, too, that her passion brings her only the burden of pain, fraught with many sighs. Ah, but we know this isn?t true. Yes, Endymion?s physical self was left on that mountainside, but that is all. His mind, soul, spirit, and heart all lie with his love, the princess of the Moon. His princess. Many nights he dreamed of her, and many days his thoughts stayed only on her. He wished to the gods that he could meet her just once but never thought they could come true. Zeus, the mightiest of gods, was often very stubborn and didn?t want mortals mixing with gods and goddesses. The one that was listening to Endymion that night, however, was none other than the goddess of the moon, Selene. She knew of the princess?s love for this Terran and she also knew that their love could survive all. She went to the princess one day and told her of the only way for her to have her love: ?Dearest Serenity, I know of your love for that Terran and I also know of his love for you. If you believe that you want to spend eternity with him, listen to me now. Only the gods can travel through space, and you are no goddess, only a princess. Therefore, you must become me. To do that, you must pledge your undying devotion towards this moon, me, and everlasting love. Then, I will surrender my powers to you, Serenity. You will become a goddess. Then, you may travel to the Earth and give Endymion a single kiss. This kiss will send his body into an eternal sleep and send all the rest, straight into your arms and heart. From then on out, you both will be blessed with eternal youth and happiness. Now go and do not argue, it is almost dawn and my brother Apollo will rise. Good luck to you.? Serenity stood there with her mouth agape for a few minutes to let the realization of what was happening sink in of what Selene was telling her. She then ran off to her mother?s temple to pledge her devotion. After kneeling on the ground in front of Selene?s statue, her body began to glow. She soon felt a rush of power and strength roll over her, making her feel like she could fly. The glow became so great that she had to close her eyes to keep from being blinded. Before she knew it, she felt like she was floating. She opened her eyes and saw she was floating towards Earth. Soon after, she spotted Endymion herding his sheep. He looked up and saw her, knowing he was finally going to be with his princess. Serenity floated to the ground and leaned in toward Endymion. They shared one deep passionate kiss before Endymion fell to the ground. His soul lifted out of the body and they floated towards the moon, to spend eternity together. It is also said that on occasion, the couple returned to the sleeping Endymion?s body. Selene wanted to become mortal. She went to Earth and found shelter at her brother, Apollo?s shrine. He knew Selene gave her goddess form to Serenity but never understood it. Whenever questioned why she did, her response never changed: ?Because their love would outshine the brightest of suns, the beauty of Aphrodite, the strength of Zeus, and even the warmth of Selene. The world deserves a love as that, even if it meant my ability to be a goddess.?
