It was my first and to this date only fan fic published on the net. I've been working to remedy that situation recently, but on different anime series. Mainly EVA. Still, as I was working on these new fics, I received a feeling of nostalgia. My mind drifted to my first fan fic and wouldn't get off of it. The changes are mainly grammatical and spelling errors that I managed to pick up as I read it through, also improving a few words here and there to make it sound a little less childish. Forgive my original notes, I don't know what I was on at the time, but by the looks of the original notes, it must have been something pretty bad... I also tweaked a few things here and there to help the story make more sense as a whole. I personally think that the fic is improved. And that's all I have to say this time around. Original Notes: All right..this is my first attempt at fanfic. Geez...I feel so sick. I just finished this after reading Razzz's First Love. My story pales in comparison. Oh Lord does it pale.. and I hate how she's so gol danged energentic..just like the stupid energizer bunny! ::giggle:: Just kidding. I hope I didn't make her cry. I love that energizer bunny. ::grin:: Careful, folks..this portrays Melvin... you Melvin haters back away slowly, for Melvin is a main character here. I chose to use Melvin because he reminds me of myself. Nerds through and through. Except, I'm better with the ladies of course!(yeah right...) If you like, if you don't like, if you have encouragement, or if you just feel like nagging at someone, write me at FallingFurther@hotmail.com Please? I'm begging you even... ::gets on his knees and gives you the puppy eyes:: Oh yeah. these ( ) mean actions...I could make a whole sequence like this : "I'm so sorry," said Brian as he sniffed. But I'm too lazy sometimes. Behind The Glasses by: Falling Further Melvin stepped out of the bookstore feeling like a new man. Well, a relieved one at least. He had just purchased a few books, and so he knew he wouldn't have nothing to do for the next few days. They were some new fantasy novels that his online friends had been praising. They had mentioned the novels to him so often that he couldn't wait to get home to read them. He removed one of the books from his bag and began to hastily read the preface. Since he was concentrated on the words of the book, he never noticed the foot that managed to shoot out from someplace to his immediate right. "Ouch!" yelped Melvin as he tripped over the foot. Melvin swung his arms wildly, and for a moment, he believed he would be able to balance himself. That was when his lack of balance kicked in and sent him sprawling to the ground. He hit the ground hard, causing his books to jump out of his hands and onto the pavement. "Watch where you're stepping!" growled the owner of the foot as his friends laughed at Melvin. "You might hurt my foot or something," he added with a chortle as he and the rest of his group continued on. Melvin felt tears rushing to his eyes. "Don't cry now!" Melvin screamed at himself. He was at the mall...people might SEE him! He gazed about to make sure no one was looking at him. Then he realized that he couldn't see much. Where had his glasses gone? Melvin's silent contemplation was broken by a voice which asked, in a surpisingly soothing voice, "You alright, Melvin?" "Umm.." Melvin gulped. His eyes were extremely close to hitting flood mode. His brain screamed at his eyes to keep quiet, for it wouldn't be right to cry now. He took a deep breath and calmed his twitching eyes. "I'll be fine," he managed to squeak out before a sniffle took over him. And then the tears started to flood through his eyes. After about a minute of flooding his general vicinity, Melvin felt warm arms encircle him, and heard soft words whispered into his ear. Melvin latched on to whoever this good Samaratan was tightly, for he felt better in that hug. After another solid minute of flooding, his sobs finally diminished a little, and he was able to ask for his glasses. The stranger relinquished its hold from him as it went to pick up his glasses. Melvin felt them in his hands and proceeded to quickly put them on. He was anxious to see his good Samaratan. After shakily placing the glasses on the bridge of his nose, Melvin blinked once, and then turned to face the person who had been so kind to him. As soon as he saw who it was, he blushed deeply. He had been hugging Lita Kino! Lita smiled warmly at Melvin before helping him pick up his books. Once they were all picked up, Lita asked, "Are you alright, Melvin?" Melvin blinked, gulped, and cleared his throat simultaneously. It made for a curious noise. After the noise had cleared, Melvin slowly mumbled, "Yes..(hiccup)..tha..(sniff)..thank you very much, Lita." Lita sent an exceedingly warm smile his way. She then winked at him once before heading towards her original destination, which had been a nearby clothing store. Melvin stared in her direction for a few minutes before deciding to head on home. Once Melvin had reached his house, he began to read one of the books he had purchased at the mall. It was a fantasy book, and he quickly immersed himself in it using his fool proof method, which involved him imagining himself to be the hero of the book. He read the book until it was time to sleep. Once it was(time to sleep that is), he quickly changed into his pajamas and jumped into bed. As he slept, Melvin had a dream about the book. This was a common occurance after reading a book for extended periods. There was a graceful knight captain, and the captain was fighting off it's tyrant liege in order to ensure the freedom of her friends. The captain was tall had long brown hair that flailed about her as she battled her liege. The hair was complimented by a lovely pair of brown eyes that glimmered slightly with emotion as she fought her heart out. She was about to deliver the killing blow to the tyrant when Melvin realized who the captain was. Melvin shot up from his bed. Lita? Why was he dreaming of Lita? He pondered the matter for a few moment before it hit him. He owed her something for what she had done at the mall. Melvin lied back down and turned over things he could do for Lita. Maybe he could tutor her for a bit. He rolled his eyes. That wasn't good enough, plus she might think he didn't respect her intelligence. Melvin rolled over in his bed as he pondered what girls liked to do. His eyes suddenly lit up. There was an upcoming dance, maybe he could bring her to that! Yes, show her a good time. Dance with her and everything. She didn't really tend go to the dances with guys. She was usually there with her 4 friends. Melvin woke up at around 4:00, or so his alarm clock told him. Melvin quickly took a shower and changed into his school clothes, which didn't look much different from everything else he wore. As a matter of fact...it was all that he did wear. After changing, Melvin was ready for school, which wasn't scheduled to start for another two hours. He spent this extra time coming up with a plan to get Lita to go to the dance with him. Though he was able to bang out a good quantity of ideas, none of them seemed to be adequate. Melvin didn't even know her that well. As a matter of fact, he hadn't ever spoken to her outside of school, with the exception of the crying incident. How was he supposed to get her to go to the dance with him if he couldn't even approach her? Then it hit him. Reconnaissance! Melvin viewed the girl out of the corner of his eye. His palms were sweating heavily despite the fact that there was a fairly nice breeze going around. It was time. He casually walked up to the girl, who was busy loading her locker, and tapped her lightly on her shoulder. Too lightly. Melvin frowned as she didn't even acknowledge the tap. He decided on a less suave approach. He coughed. Amy quickly turned around to see who was behind her. As soon as she spotted Melvin, her brow furrowed. Why was Melvin behind her? "Yes, Melvin?" she asked politely. "Amy," he began. "I'm trying to umm..." Melvin faltered as he grasped for a word that would suit the situation. He finally concluded the thought with, "gather some information." "On what, Melvin?" Amy asked. This was interesting. What could Melvin possibly need help with? "You are close friends with Lita, right?" "Yes, why?" Amy asked a little less politely. She was becoming anxious to know what he wanted. "Well, I'm sorta trying to see if she has a date to the ...dance." Melvin finally blurted out. Amy frowned. Melvin wanted to ask Lita out? Her Lita? He didn't stand a chance. "Umm...Melvin? I don't th.." Then her smile appeared on her face as a memory of how Lita had fed her a tobasco sauce cookie yesterday forced it's way into the front of her mind. "It's Payback time, Lita." she thought to herself. "Amy?" Melvin asked after her pause. "Oh..umm...I don't think she has a date yet!" she finished with a smile. "Really?" Melvin asked, getting excited. "Time for phase two!" his mind began. He was about to rush off to complete it when he felt a hand on his arm. "Melvin, you are heading in the wrong direction. Lita's locker is over there!" Amy exclaimed, pointing in the other direction. "As a matter of fact...you might get lost, so I'll lead you there myself!" Amy exclaimed, anxious to see the look on Lita's face when Melvin asked her out. She grabbed Melvin's hand and proceeded to drag him to Lita's locker. As she led Melvin by his hand, she noticed how sweaty it was. Amy glanced down at his hand, then looked at his face. Her eyes blinked in surprise as she noticed the determined look that had settled there. "He really wants to go to the dance with her," she thought. "It would break his heart if she said no.." Melvin felt phase two fly out the window as Amy took his hand and lead him to Lita's locker. He sighed, then calmed himself down with the reassuring thought that there was nothing like the old direct approach. They were rounding the corner to Lita's locker when he felt his arm pulled away from his body. He looked in the direction of his arm and noticed that Amy had stopped. "What's the matter?" he asked. "Umm..." began Amy. She frowned. What was she going to do? She couldn't let him go out there like this. She looked him over. He was wearing his usual style of clothing. Sweat pants, a T-shirt, those thick glasses of his and a thick mop of brown hair. "Melvin, how were you planning on asking Lita to the dance?" Melvin's eyes lit up as he retold the result of two hours of contemplating. "I did have a big plan," he began, "like I was going to cook her favorite food for her, and then I was going to.." Amy frowned as she listened to the extent of his plan. It was a sweet and novel attempt, and it may have worked on a normal girl, but Lita was nothing if not unique. His plan would fall to pieces. That wouldn't do. Not one bit. "Hey, Melvin, I have an idea. How about you meet me after school, and I can give you some information on how to get Lita to go out with you?" Melvin thought about it a moment, then agreed. The rest of the day seemed to pass away slowly, as if the keeper of time was fighting a battle for every second. Finally, school was ended, and it was time to get a makeover, for Melvin. Amy and Melvin met in front of the library, where they usually found each other. "Let's see," said Amy, "First thing we have to do is get rid of that look." "What look?" asked Melvin. "You know! That...nerdy look." Amy let out shyly. Melvin blushed, then said, "I would..but I don't really know how!" Amy smiled. "Well, first off, let's get you some clothes!" Melvin frowned. He didn't know if he was prepared for this. She had grabbed his arm though, and they were off to spend Melvin's money. Amy dragged Melvin to a famed clothing store and started picking out clothing that she knew Lita liked. The next three hours showed Melvin trying on clothes so that he could parade in front of Amy and be rewarded with a nod or a shake of the head. Eventually, Amy decided he had enough clothing and they left the store, much to the disappointment of the store owner, who had made a pretty penny from Melvin's considerable amount of purchases. "Where are we headed next, Amy?" asked Melvin as they exited the store. "Hmmm," Amy said as she looked him over. He now had clothes, but they were going to have to do something about those glasses of his. "We are headed to the optometrist!" "Really? Why?" asked Melvin, not liking where this conversation was headed...his wallet was already deflated enough as it was without a new pair of glasses. "We're getting you some contact lenses!" she exclaimed as she dragged a stunned Melvin along. Amy emerged from the mall with a new and improved looking Melvin. Amy smiled, proud of her work. She then looked down at her watch. It was 10:00...at night. "OMIGOSH!" she exclaimed. "I have to go...umm...we'll meet again tommorrow, ok, Melvin?" Right after nodding his consent, Melvin became surrounded by a cloud of dust which Amy managed to kick up as she raced towards her home. They met at the library again. "What's the plan for today?" inquired Melvin. "Oh, well, today, you're going to learn how you are supposed to act!" Amy exclaimed with a grin. "How are we going to do that?" Melvin asked. He was starting to get nervous. "We're going to the movies!" exclaimed Amy. "We'll see some movies with guys Lita likes." "What kinda movie are we watching?" asked Melvin. "Oh, Romantic of course!" grinned Amy. Her grin broadened when she heard his groan. They arrived at the movies just in time. The movie was labeled, "Living a Dream." It was about a nerdy girl, who fell in love with the most popular guy in school. Man, was this girl nerdy. But then, she decided to clean herself up for her love. In the end, he fell in love with her. It was during the prom. She was as usual, a wall flower. This time though, she had turned down offers to dance, waiting for the guy. The guy went to the band, and asked them something. The band nodded, agreeing to whatever plan he had. Then, the guy walked towards the girl, who was turned around, and tapped her on the shoulder. The girl turned, and looked into his eyes. They stared at each other for a minute, and then the guy turned towards the band and winked. Some slow music started playing. Then the guy turned back towards the girl, took his hand in hers, and lead her towards the dance floor. By this part of the movie, Amy had become visibly emotional, as could be seen as she snuggled up to the nearest thing which just happened to be Melvin. Melvin was aware of this, and was getting nervous. When the scene had ended, Amy took her head from his shoulder and blushed. Melvin smiled...but had almost frowned. He was glad that she had taken her head from his shoulder... or was he? His mind felt better..but his heart did not. Melvin's face contorted. His heart?? Where the hell did that come from. He turned his head towards Amy, and noticed she was back to watching the movie. As he gazed upon her face, he knew where it had come from. She looked so pretty. Melvin shook his head, but continued to stare at Amy. He did so until she looked towards him. Since he had been watching her, the movement of her head had been easily detected, and he was able to return his eyes to the movie before she would notice he had been staring at her. When the movie was over, they left the theater and walked along a normal street, talking about the movie. "I don't know, I didn't like the ending that much.." said Melvin. "Why not? I thought it was romantic..." said Amy. "Wasn't it just a bit too corny? I mean, it was straight out of one of those romance novels that my sister reads!" exclaimed Melvin. Amy smiled as she recalled the movie. "Sometimes a girl likes a guy to be a bit corny." Melvin nodded and took the note down mentally. "Still, I thought the guy was a bit too commanding." Amy's eyebrow rose. "In what way?" "Well, I think the guy shoulda asked before he lead her out to the dance floor," replied Melvin "Well, yes, that would have been better..." said Amy wistfully. Melvin grinned. "You realize that I just corrected you, right?" Amy frowned. "You did, didn't you?" she asked. Melvin nodded solemnly, as if to say he wouldn't let it go. Amy's eyes narrowed. "Well, I can't let news of this get out...I'm going to have to tickle you to death," she stated nonchalantly, her eyes twinkling mischievously. Melvin's eyes widened when he saw that look. She meant business. He started to run. Amy caught up to him though, and soon, they were rolling through the grass, trying to tickle each other. Eventually, as always happens in tickling matches to the death, they became tangled up in each other's limbs. Their faces were inches apart, forcing them to look into each other's eyes. They stayed in that position until a boy who had witnessed the whole "death threat" yelled, "Hey, kiss her already!" Amy blushed and unwrapped herself from Melvin's arms, and stood up to compose herself. Melvin stood up too and rubbed the back of his neck. After stretching themselves out, they proceeded to watch the grass in front of their feet. It was an ackward moment. Eventually, though, Amy got an idea. "Alright, Melvin, time to dance," she said with a grin. Melvin stared at her with wide eyes, for she had just uncovered his dire fear. "Da..da..dance?" asked a stupified Melvin. Amy grinned and nodded. "That's why you go to dances, Melvin!" "Ok..." Melvin said. "But I can't dance!" The magnitude of the exasperated look on Melvin's face caused her to giggle. After giggling to herself for a while, she placated Melvin by saying, "That's alright, Melvin, I'll teach you." Melvin breathed a sigh of relief. "Alright, where am I supposed to put my arms?" Amy giggled again. "Ok, slow dance then. Hmm..I'll show you." Amy stepped in front of him and placed his hands around her waist. She then put her arms around his head, and started to sway side to side. At first, Melvin just stood straight as a rock, but then he started to sway with her. They did this for a couple of hours, both of them looking into each other's eyes as if in a trance. They didn't wake up from the trance until the boy, the same one who had made them stop looking into each other's eyes before said, "Hey, you two still there? Geez...get a room!" The comment was enough to wake them up from staring into each other's eyes. The thought of how long they had been staring at each other caused a blush to spread itself along their faces. "You're not that bad a dancer, Melvin," complimented Amy. Melvin only blushed and looked at his feet as another ackward moment of silence came into being. Amy took the oppritunity to glance at her watch. She still had two hours, but being with Melvin was becoming ackward for some reason. "Hey, Melvin, I have to head home," said Amy. Melvin offered to walk her home. Amy accepted the invitation and so they walked together to her house. The next day, they, once again, met at the library. Melvin was feeling tense. He had to force his muscles to move. His tongue felt like it was made of cement, but he eventually got it to obey by asking, "So, what's on the agenda today, Amy?" Amy forced a smile, for the tense feeling was mutual. "Well, today, I tell you how to get Lita to go to the dance with you." Melvin grinned. "Well, it's about time!" Amy winced then, but Melvin hadn't noticed. He wanted to get this over with so that he could ask Lita out, show her a good time, say goodbye, and avoid Amy for the rest of his life. Why? Melvin really didn't know himself. All he knew was that whenever he was around her, his stomach would turn over with fear of doing something wrong. It was like he was scrutinizing himself for the ultimate test, and if he failed it, his life wouldn't be worth living anymore. The way the thought seemed to ring so true scared him, and so, for the first time, Melvin decided that he couldn't bring himself to accept a test. He wanted to fly by it altogether. Amy led him to the park. As they walked around, she went over the extent of her plan. Melvin frowned as he listened. "This is going to be harder than I thought!" he exclaimed to Amy. Amy nodded. "But it's going to work!" she grinned. She smiled as she looked around, for this was her favorite part of the park. The part where there were chess boards set up. "Up for a game or two of chess, Melvin?" Melvin grinned, for he was very good at chess. Though he knew he would be able to beat Amy no problem, his ego demanded that he prove it manually. He nodded his approval. "Anything to keep my mind off of you.." he discreetly muttered as she led him to a chess board. The two played chess for about an hour. Amy hadn't lost a game yet, and Melvin was starting to get sick of it. "Hey, Amy, I hear that there's a boat show today, wanna go see it?" Melvin asked. He cautiously picked up his knight, and placed an L away from Amy's king. "Check by the way." Melvin added with a smirk. "Sure..just lemme..." said Amy as she picked up her queen. Melvin saw the move. He grabbed her arm and dragged her away from the board a second before she could place the queen down and exclaim "CHECKMATE!" The boat show wasn't going to be held for another hour, and so the two walked around, visiting shops and stuff. They had been walking around for a half hour when they heard a little girl crying. "What's the matter?" cooed Amy to the little girl. The little girl sniffled a bit, then pointed to a scoop of ice cream on the ground, and indicated her empty ice cream cone. "Oh, did your ice cream fall down?" asked Melvin in a soft voice. The little girl nodded, then pouted, then started to cry again. Melvin grabbed the little girl by the hand and led her towards a nearby ice cream store. Just then, the mother emerged from the store. "What are you doing with my baby??!?" she screamed as she attacked Melvin with her handbag. Melvin gasped and ducked just in time to miss the first swipe. His face relaxed visibly. And then the second swipe came and whapped him across the recently relaxed face, knocking him cold. He toppled over as the lady grabbed her still sobbing child by the hand and led her away. "Oh dear, Melvin!" exclaimed Amy as she examined him. It wasn't anything serious. Amy sighed in relief, and dragged him out of the street. After 10 worry filled minutes, Melvin slowly opened his eyes. He groaned and gingerly picked himself up off the ground. He looked around and saw Amy. "What happened?" he mouthed. "You were attacked by an angry parent," grinned Amy. "Oh," said Melvin. He then remembered. "Oh...yeah...well that was one heck of a handbag!" exclaimed Melvin. "I should get one..it'd be better at stopping the bullies than radio physics!" Amy giggled. "Silly, come on, we have to get to the show!" Melvin smiled and allowed himself to be dragged along. They were stopped on their way to the dock by another teenager. The teenager waved to them, shouting "Hey, Melvin, over here!" Melvin blushed, explaining that she was his cousin. Amy smiled and let go of his hand, letting him go off to converse with her. Her hand felt suprisingly cold and uncomfortable with his hand away from hers... "Hey, Melvin, who's she? She's pretty cute. Where'd you pick up a girl like that? Matter of fact, when did you start looking so good? I mean, if I wasn't your cousin, I would be asking you out!" the girl giggled. "Well, aren't you going to introduce me to your girlfriend?" The girl tapped her foot impatiently. Amy overheard the talkative girl and blushed. It did look as if the two were going out. Amy had even been holding his hand. She looked him over and noticed he didn't look too bad when he was cleaned up. He was also kind, smart, and good at chess, which were all qualities she looked for in a man. In spite of who she was thinking about, she sighed dreamily. She then realized that she was sighing over Melvin and blushed a deeper shade of red. "What's the matter, Amy?" asked Melvin, who had just noticed the rapidly shifting emotions on Amy's normally placid face. "Oh..umm...uh.." Amy stuttered. What was the matter? Was she getting nervous in front of Melvin? What was happening? Amy shook the questions out of her head and let loose some sort of excuse about having to go home. "Oh? Really? That's too bad," said Melvin, his voice dripping with sincerity. "I'll walk you home then." He offered her his hand, which Amy gratefully accepted, and the two were off to the Mizuno household. "Hey!" exclaimed the girl as the two walked away. They were already pretty far when she shouted, "Fine, be that way! I didn't want to meet her anyways." They walked towards Amy's home in silence. Melvin's mind was battling itself furiously, and the resulting jumble of thoughts prevented him from carrying the few conversations Amy had attempted to initiate. Why did his mind scream at him to get away from Amy? Did he hate her? No..that couldn't be...because he enjoyed being around her more than anything else. Even his Playstation! His mind and his gut continued duking it out as the two sauntered forth in silence. The walk to the house hadn't lasted long, but to Amy, it had seemed like forever. She had begun to feel self-concious about halfway through the walk. "Is my hair alright?" she thought to herself as they neared her house. She unconciously touched her hair before realizing what she was doing and quickly yanking her hand back down. Melvin, being the gentleman he was, walked her to her door. "I had fun Amy. We should do this again sometime," suggested, a smile lighting his face. "Yeah, sure. Goodbye, Melvin." said Amy, biting her lip and looking down in an attempt not to look into his eyes. His eyes would pull her back in, and she wouldn't be able to say make it inside the house. She had to make it inside. Her eyes attached themselves to her hand, which shakily removed the house key from her purse. She proceeded to fumble open front door as Melvin walked off. Amy rushed inside and watched him walk away through a curtained window. She was startled to feel her mother look out of the window over her shoulder, just in time to see what her daughter had been staring at. Amy blushed and attempted to get her mom's mind off of the retreating boy. "You're home early today, mother," stated Amy. Amy's mom didn't buy the rouse though. "That was a nice looking young man," she stated as she focused her eyes on her daughter. Amy blushed and nodded her consent. "You should invite him over sometime, I wouldn't mind meeting the guy you like." Amy blushed, and realized the words had hit home. Still, she decided to deny it. "I don't like him, Mom. I've just been helping him out with a project." "Sure sure," smiled her mother. Amy frowned, then blushed some more. She excused herself and walked up to her room, leaving her mother to smile to herself. Melvin frowned. He was doing what Amy had told him to do. Wait for Lita to pass by, and try to look as cool as he could. She said that if Lita liked the way he looked, she would approach him. Melvin thought that sounded okay, but the waiting was killing him. As he waited, he thought of what he would do if Lita allowed him to ask her out. Maybe he could bring Amy to the fair that was coming around to celebrate. No...he told himself he wouldn't see Amy again after this was over. But then he would feel awful..because.. because Amy was Amy. He had been thinking of Amy a lot lately. He had never thought about her this way before, she had always seemed like the competition. That person he had to beat out to be the smartest in his class. But over the past few days, he had come to know a part of her that he liked. It was a selfless side that called out to him. Where did he get that revelation from? Well, it had occured to him during the walk home that he wouldn't have stood a chance at this Lita thing if she hadn't stopped him. She was helping him out when she could be at home studying or something. Maybe even reading a book. Melvin smiled to himself as he imagined Amy curled up on a couch, studying for an exam. The heavens knew a book was better company than him. He was just the school nerd. As Melvin continued these thoughts, Lita had passed by, and after a look, had walked up to him. "Hi, I'm Lita, what's your name?" she asked in her usual chirpy voice. Melvin gulped. Now was the time. It was now, or never. "It's..(gulp)..me. Melvin," he said. He realized how stupid he had just sounded and tried to cover up by flashing her a smile. "Melvin?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. Her personal beliefs screamed that Melvin did not equal cute. Melvin nodded. Lita, not about to be turned off by a name, asked, "Do you have a date for the upcoming dance?" Melvin gulped. Now was the moment of truth. Amy had told him that this was the most crucial part. If Lita asked, and you said no, you were in. She had emphasized this by looking into his eyes as she said it. He had almost forgotten it then and there...her eyes were THAT beautiful, two deep blue pools that threatened to drown him in their... "Melvin?" Lita asked. Melvin contemplated for another moment. He could say he had someone in mind and ask Amy out to the dance...but would that really work? Amy was..she was Amy. Melvin was now realizing that she was a goddess. That adorable blue hair..those mesmerizing blue eyes... that perfect figure. And she was smart too. She was probably the smartest in the school. "She could have any guy she wants ... probably has 15 in line to ask her out right now!" he thought with a sigh. "Melvin..." Lita droned as she waved a hand in front of his face. "Huh?" asked Melvin, snapping out of his trance. "Do you have a date or not?" she asked exasperatedly. Melvin thought about it a moment again. Amy probably already had a date to the dance..and he had went to all this trouble for Lita. His mind then added that he had resolved to avoid Amy for the rest of his days. Melvin smiled at Lita, and shook his head no. He was then caught in a brunette whirlwind as she told him what he should do in preparation for the dance that was to be held the next day. Melvin had been told to pick up Lita at 6:00. He squandered some time reading some more of his novels, as well as studying for some upcoming tests. Meanwhile, the girls had all gotten ready for the dance together at Lita's house. "I can't beleive that Lita is the only one to have a date to the dance!" exclaimed Mina as she tied the red ribbon in her hair. Raye nodded as she brushed her hair. "I hear you're going with Melvin, though. Is that true?" asked Raye in an inquisitive manner. Lita blushed a little, then nodded. "Lita, what possessed you to go to the dance with Melvin? Did someone force you?" asked Serena innocently. Lita stuck out her tongue and replied, "He's much more...cute now! You'll see," she promised as she zipped up her elegant emerald green dress. Amy smiled sadly as she acknowledged Lita's claim...even if she only acknowledged it in private. Lita looked great tonight. She had gone all out, which could be seen from her perfectly coordinated ourfit. Lita's beauty combined with her natural air of confidence were enough to capture the heart of any man. It was no wonder that Melvin had fallen for her. Thoughts of her own lack of beauty and fiery spirit haunted Amy as she buried her face into a book, falsely pretending to read. She was already dressed and prepared for the dance. After dwelling on her lack of womanly charms, her thoughts had turned towards the way Melvin would look at the dance. Not bad at all. Ami had helped him pick out his outfit, and had consequently seen him in it. It was made out of soft material. Ami had made sure of that, so that Lita wouldn't feel uncomfortable while wrapping her arms around him. She then wondered over what it would feel like to feel the softness of the clothing while her arms were wrapped around Melvin's neck. Ami was awakened from her day dream as Serena tripped over something and into her lap. After hearing Serena's apology, she silently berated herself for thinking that way about her friend's date, and resolved to push all thoughts of Melvin out of her mind. She was a strong willed young lady, and a senshi at that! She should be able to control her mind that much. But, as her watery eyes suggested, she just couldn't help herself. Melvin slowly sauntered towards Lita's front door. He tentatively knocked on the door, and was greeted by a cacaphony of noises as the girls rushed to the door. Serena reached the door first by hurtling over Raye, who had been tripped by Lita. She flashed a triumphant grin to the other girls and burst the door open wide. "Who is..." then she gasped. She put on one of her innocent little smiles, directed it at Melvin, and whispered back to the other girls, "He's mine!" "Sorry, Serena, I'm taken," said Melvin. Serena gasped. "You know my name?" she asked in shock as she fidgeted with her odangos. "It's me, Melvin. Don't you recognize me?" he asked as he gazed around the room, looking for his date. Serena stepped back from even more shock. "That's Melvin?" she thought. "Gee...never knew he had green eyes...course...those glasses didn't help me see em much.." she muttered. Lita elbowed Serena in the stomach as she glided past her. Serena yelped then stepped away. In one flowing motion, Lita slid her arm into Melvin's and led him away, before sticking her tongue out at her friends. Mina giggled. "She looks happy." Everyone else nodded in agreement. Amy put the book back over her face as she felt a tear roll down her cheek. The dance was held in the school gym, and so the smell that hung in the air wasn't all that good. The students hadn't come there to sniff stagnant air though, and so were placated by the soothing music that filled their ears and the company of those they cared about. And since the main principals of the dance were fulfilled, it was no wonder that the dance was packed. The group immediately situated themselves in the spots they planned to spend the night in. Raye was singing with the band, her voice adding a beautiful quality to the serene music. Amy was standing serenely around the punch bowl, watching her friends. Lita was out on the dancing floor with Melvin, occasionally yelping as he stepped on her foot. Mina had been asked to dance by a guy, and was now having a candid conversation with the young man. Serena had just walked onto the floor and was dancing about alone, raising the eyebrows of many as she flailed her arms to the serene music. As Melvin danced with Lita, he found he was constantly looking over to the punch bowl, stealing secretive glances at Amy. He couldn't help himself. It was as if his eyes were being pulled to her by a force of nature. He assured himself that this would be the last time he would be gazing at her in this manner, for he would be avoiding her after this dance was over. Unfortunately, the thought brought a pain to his chest rather than relieving the tension that ammassed itself there as he saw her, so close yet so far away. And then he saw the guy walk up to her, and he almost fainted from the sharp pain that seemed to erupt from his left breast (tee hee!). Amy had been watching Serena make a fool out of herself when the student approached her. She didn't realize he was there until he was but a few steps away from her. When she realized there was someone else beside her, she immediately stiffened up. Slowly, she looked up at the person who had snuck up on her. It wasn't Melvin. The disappointment on her face was visible from about a mile or two away. The boy looked like he wanted to talk. Amy loosened up a little, letting the disappointment drain from her face. Talking, socializing, theorizing would all be pleasant diversions from thinking about Melvin. Melvin's eyes bugged out of his head as Amy smiled innocently at the guy, and begin speaking to him. The pain was that great. He knew she would be out here with some guy, but knowing it and seeing it were two different things. He felt his eyes grow watery as the two continued to converse. "Owww!" exclaimed Lita as her toe was trampled for the 15th time. "Sorry....I'm used to dancing with," he risked another glance towards the punch bowl, "..a shorter person.." mumbled Melvin apologetically as he once again backed away from her feet. "Melvin, what's wrong? Are you thirsty?" asked Lita. "What? Why would you think that?" frowned Melvin "Your eyes keep on gazing towards the punch bowl," explained Lita. Melvin blushed a little bit. He wanted to go to the punch bowl so badly. Still, he had resolved that he wouldn't see Amy again. The resolution quickly faded away as he stared at the punch bowl once more. He knew he wouldn't be able to stay away from Amy. He didn't want to leave her side. He wanted to be the guy who she spent the night talking to. The one who she let carry her shopping bags. The one she beat up unmercifully in chess. How was he going to avoid her for the rest of his life when he felt things like that? "Melvin, is something wrong?" asked Lita, in her worried voice. Melvin sighed it was one of those now or never moments. He took a look at Amy one last time for reassurance, then began to explain his dilema to Lita. Amy sighed as she saw Melvin lean in closer to Lita and say something. "Probably something charming," she thought "Melvin can be charming." She looked at Lita and waited for her friend to blush from a well placed compliment. She didn't expect Lita to pale. "Is that so, Melvin?" she asked. Melvin blushed, then nodded. Lita smiled faintly. "Well, there are a lot of guys here, Melvin, and I bet they can all dance better then you." He blinked. "Does that mean..I can go?" he asked tentatively. Lita smiled, brighter this time, and nodded. "Like I could stop you! If you could only see the look in your eyes when you looked towards the punch bowl! I thought you were dying of thirst!" They both chuckled at that. "Now, you just get over to Ami before I change my mind!" "No grudges?" "None at all..." trailed Lita as she strode towards a cute guy with a determined look on her face. Amy frowned. Lita was walking towards some guy named Mike.. and Melvin was heading towards the band. He said something to Raye, then turned in her direction. The guy she was talking to asked if something was wrong. Amy blushed, and shook her head negative. She looked over at Melvin and noticed he was still heading in her direction. She calmed herself down by telling herself that he was only heading in her direction for punch. As she noticed him coming closer and closer, she quickly turned around, pretending to read a flyer on the wall. The guy she was talking to frowned and once again asked if there was something wrong. She didn't answer, for she was wishing that she was a flyer right then, so she wouldn't have to be so embarressed about how she looked. About how Melvin preferred tall, beautiful, fiery Lita over her. Amy heard only his footsteps. Maybe it was only her imagination, but they had seemed to stop behind her. Then she felt the tap on her shoulder, that familiar tap. The one she had barely felt so few days ago. She turned around slowly, and looked into those green eyes. Those gentle green eyes. She was afraid of getting hurt, but she had to hear what he had to say. She forced herself to smile at him as the defenses she had built around her heart melted under his gaze. "Yes, Melvin?" Melvin smiled his smile. He looked towards Raye and gave her a wink. Suddenly, a new, soft, song started playing. Melvin looked towards her again. He took her hand in his, and asked softly, "Do you care to dance?" Amy smiled and nodded, allowing Melvin to lead her towards the dance floor. The guy she was talking to muttered something then headed into a corner, hoping none of his friend saw him get rejected so badly. "They look nice together," commented Lita to Serena. Serena giggled and added, "Hey, if they spend all their time concentrating on each other, maybe they won't ruin the test curves anymore!" Lita beamed happily at her friend and gaver her a high five. She might pass history yet with this new development! And on the dance floor, Amy and Melvin twirled the night away. All thoughts of anything were whisked away as they lost themselves in each other's eyes. To Amy, it was like a dream. She had been thinking about dancing with him like this all night. To Melvin, it was heavenly. He was dancing with an angel, and he hadn't step on her toes once I admit...that was a bit corny...but..it's my first time..cut me some slack! Anyways...PLEASE write to me with whatever at FallingFurther@hotmail.com...Please? If You do..I'll write another story even...I promise this time...really! I already have one on cooking, cept this one is about Melvin and Molly. I could make one centered on Amy if I get enough requests for it though. Course, maybe I shouldn't say that.
