The telepathic conversations will be set off by the ' symbol. ********* "Usagi!" Chibi-Usa's voice rang down the street. Usagi had just gotten off her bus, and waved to the younger girl running down the street. Chibi-Usa reached her, dressed in Usagi's old uniform from Juuban Junior High school. Unfortunately, though, Chibi- Usa had grown but was still shorter than Usagi, causing Ikuko to alter the uniform before Chibi-Usa could wear it to school. Everyone was still waiting for Chibi-Usa's growth spurt to occur, assuming she inherited a little of Mamoru's height. They started walking together toward the Tsukino house. "Why aren't you studying at Rei-chan's?" Chibi-Usa asked her. Usagi shrugged. "I was at the snack shop when Momma called there and asked if I could come home. She said she had something to tell me." "Is everything all right?" Chibi-Usa looked worried for a moment. "Hai. She said nothing was wrong, she just had a surprise for me," Usagi replied. That had been the first thought on her mind too, that something had happened to another member of her family. After the past year, she didn't want anything to happen to her family or friends ever again. Fat chance, Tsukino Usagi, she thought. The girls entered the house, and started to slip off their shoes. "Momma! We're home!" Usagi called out, throwing her bag under the coat rack. Ikuko walked out of the living room, a huge smile on her face. "I've got some freshly-baked cookies waiting for my favorite girls!" Usagi and Chibi-Usa's eyes grew big. "COOKIES!" they exclaimed, and started to take off toward the kitchen. Ikuko reached out, and managed to stop Usagi. "There's someone here to see you," Ikuko said. "It has to do about that surprise I told you about." Chibi-Usa stepped back into the hallway, her mouth full of cookies and holding some cake she managed to find as well. "This I have to see." Usagi turned around to see a very familiar person sitting on the sofa. "Mamo-chan!" He immediately sprang to his feet. The expression on his face was priceless. He looked as if he was going to be led in front of a firing squad. "Usako, Chibi-Usa," he managed to croak out in a pleasant voice. "You're the surprise Momma was telling me about?" Usagi ran over, and threw her arms around him. "I like this surprise!" "That's not exactly it," he told her, putting his arm around her. "No, but Mamoru-san is doing me the biggest favor!" Ikuko walked back in with Chibi-Usa following her. Out in the hallway, the door opened, then slammed shut again as Shingo arrived home from school. Luna walked into the living room. "Usagi-chan, I have decided it is time for you to learn how to drive," Ikuko announced. Dead silence. Chibi-Usa dropped the food in her hands. A loud THUNK was heard in the hall as Shingo hit the ground. Usagi's jaw dropped in shock. So did Luna's. Mamoru looked like he had been handed a death sentence. Ikuko smiled happily. "With whose car?" Usagi managed to say after a moment. "Poppa's?" "Hai. I've never been a real good driver, and with you going to the University now, it's time for you to learn. We put it off from last year because of your father's death, but we can't wait any longer." No one said a word. ********** Tsukino Kenji's dark blue 1997 Toyota Camry sat with its hood up. Usagi leaned against the wall, watching Mamoru check out the oil and other car fluids she didn't know their names for, or how they work. Driving in the city was usually not recommended. There was so much traffic that one usually got further by walking, which was one of the reasons Usagi had never learned how to drive before. But, with the Azabu campus being some distance from the Juuban area, Usagi, Rei, Ami, and Minako had been riding the bus to the University. Mamoru has been driving out there the entire time he had been going to school, and sometimes took the girls when it fit into his schedule. The legal age to drive a car in Japan was 18, and the steps towards getting a license were vigorous from what Usagi could recall. It usually involved going to a special driving school, and so many classes that Usagi was getting a headache just thinking about it. However, Ikuko knew how much Usagi disliked school and knew if she entered a driving school it would take her forever and a day to learn how to drive. Ikuko's brother worked for the driver's license department and told if Usagi could find a teacher who had no prior driving problem, and if she could pass the final paper test along with the driving portion, then she could skip the driving school. So, guess who Ikuko drafted? "It looks fine," Mamoru's voice drifted into Usagi's thoughts, and she looked up to see him slamming the hood shut. He grabbed a towel from where it had been resting beside the hood, and began to wipe his hands off. He looked over at her. "Something wrong?" "Nothing," Usagi lied, giving him a bright smile. "So, when can we start with the lessons?" "This afternoon. It's a good time. I know of a dorm parking lot over on the Azabu campus that clears out around 2 p.m. or so." Mamoru leaned back against the car, and studied Usagi. She usually was so overjoyed about the littlest things. Why wasn't she excited about learning to drive? He had been ecstatic himself when he had gotten his license. The final step to total freedom for him. Usagi nodded, then turned to go in the house. Mamoru watched her go in. Something was definitely wrong. ********** "Eh? You're really going to open up a seamstress shop?" Minako's eyes grew wide as she served a glass of sparkling water to Setsuna. The emerald-haired woman nodded, taking her drink and sipping it. "I went to the bank and saw about getting a small business loan. I'll be able to afford it only if it goes through." "I'm sure it will, Setsuna-san," Makoto replied, taking a sip of her tea. "We'll all pitch in to help." "It sounds like fun!" Minako added. She lofted her tray into the air. "Fashions by Setsuna, worn by the exclusive designer model Aino Minako!!! We'll be famous together!" Makoto moaned. Setsuna smiled. "Fame isn't exactly my goal for doing this, Minako-san." Minako scooted into the booth next to Makoto, shoving her friend up against the window. "Then why are you doing it?" Makoto rubbed the new bump on her head. Subtle, Minako- chan, she thought. Real subtle. Setsuna's eyes took on a dreamy look, and she gazed out the window. "Just for a little while, I can live like you do." Makoto's and Minako's eyes grew wide with wonder. Ukari walked over to the booth and lightly tapped Minako on the shoulder. "Minako-chan! I can't serve all of these people on my own," Ukari said, winking at her friend. "Unless I get all the tips from doing your share." "Gomen!" Minako immediately slid out of the booth, and set off to work. "When will you know about the loan, Setsuna-san?" Makoto asked Setsuna. "Sometime within the next couple of days. The lease to the building I want is waiting for me to sign it," Setsuna shifted her gaze back to Makoto. "We'll all help you move in," Makoto said. Suddenly, the front door to Azabu Snacks and Sandwiches burst open, and Rei and Ami ran inside. Their cheeks were red, and sweat rolled down their faces. Makoto immediately jumped up from her seat. "Minna? What's going on?" Makoto asked, reaching in her purse for her brooch. "Is there a youma attack?" "No," Rei gasped. "It's something much, much, worse!" Setsuna frowned, trying to scan her memories. "What on Earth could it be?" "Ma...Ma...Mamoru-san is giving Usagi-chan a driving lesson!" Ami managed to exclaim, collapsing into an empty seat. Across the shop, Minako dropped her tray on an empty table. "This I have got to see!" she cried, running toward the door. "Minako-chan!" Ukari called, but it was too late. Noticing Setsuna, Ami, Rei, and Makoto were her only customers, she gave them a half-hearted smile. "Shall we go watch too?" "I wouldn't miss this for the world!" Rei took off again with Makoto and Ami on her heels. Setsuna handed Ukari some money for the drinks, and started to follow them when a sudden, blinding pain hit her. 'Setsuna...' Ukari had followed Setsuna out the door of the restaurant, and noticed her suddenly wince in pain. She pulled the door shut, and hung a CLOSED sign on it. "Setsuna-san, daijobu?" "I'll be fine," Setsuna managed a wan smile at the young woman. "Really, I'll be fine." 'Traitor, Setsuna....remember those words. You are a traitor. Setsuna...Setsuna...Setsuna..' "Okay. It looks like the others were taking off toward the parking lot behind the apartment-dorms." Ukari joined Setsuna, and walked beside her down the Quad. "I don't know Usagi-san that well, but from what Minako-chan has told me, I do not expect I'll be forgetting this anytime soon." Setsuna nodded. Ukari chatted on, feeling at ease with the older woman, but Setsuna remained silent. 'Setsuna...'the voice in her head echoed again. Shut up, she thought, trying to push the repeating voice into the smallest corner of her mind as she could. ********** If he survived this, Mamoru decided he would get someone to name him a saint. Beside him, in the driver's seat of her father's Nissan Camry, sat Usagi looking very nervous. In the back seat, much to Mamoru's dismay, was Chibi-Usa. And he just saw the other senshi coming running from the main area of the Azabu campus. Great, just great. It was going to be bad enough without two backseat drivers and about seven other critics. He was definitely going to have someone name him a saint. "Mamo-chan, what do I do?" Usagi's voice jarred him back to reality. She sounded as nervous as she looked. "Okay, let's get started then," Mamoru quickly checked to see if all of them were wearing seatbelts. He didn't want to be caught without one in a situation like this. "Put your foot on the brake pedal." "Left or right?" "Which foot do you think, Usagi no baka," Chibi-Usa muttered. Mamoru shot the younger girl a silencing look before turning his attention back to Usagi. "You use your right foot to work both the brake and the gas." "Why?" For the first time since getting in the car, Usagi looked him in the eye. Why? Why!! "Umm...that's just the way it is," he fumbled. "Well, there's two pedals. And I have two feet. Why can't I just use the left foot for the brake and the right foot for the gas?" "It's easier to use just your right foot for both." "It sounds harder to use one foot." Usagi eased her left foot onto the brake, and her right onto the gas. "See? It's much easier." "And you are not actually driving yet. Trust me, Usako, just use the right foot, and it will be so much easier." "But I want to use both of my feet, Mamo-chan." "Usagi, you are so so baka," Chibi-Usa said. "Only you would insist on using two feet to drive." "Why, you little spore!" Usagi whirled around to strangle Chibi-Usa, and Mamoru grabbed her hands, and forced them back on to the wheel. Chibi-Usa simply laughed. "Not another word, Chibi-Usa," Mamoru growled, sounding more like a stern father than the friend Chibi-Usa was used to. She promptly shut up. "Okay, now, with the RIGHT foot on the brake, press on it, then turned the key all the way and let go," Mamoru kept going, once satisfied that the resident heckler would be quiet for now. "Okay, okay." Usagi did as she was told, and the car roared to life. A bright smile appeared on her face. "I did it!" "We're just getting started. Now, keeping your right foot on the brake, ease the shift the gear stick to drive." Usagi followed his instructions to the letter. "Now, take your foot off the brake, and put it on the gas pedal." "What if I need to stop?" Usagi asked. "Don't worry, and don't press down on the gas TOO MUCH!" Mamoru's sentence ended in a yelp as Usagi pressed down too hard on the gas, and the car started barreling forward toward the dorm building. "MAMO-CHAN!" Usagi's hands were frozen to the wheel. "I CAN'T STOP!" "HIT THE BRAKE, USAGI! THE BRAKE!" Mamoru and Chibi-Usa both yelled at the same time. Usagi fumbled with the pedals. Right foot, right foot, she thought, accidentally pushing the gas pedal again, sending the car up to 50 miles per hour as it headed for the dorm building. "Kami-sama!" Rei screamed from where the others had gathered in a field on the edge of the parking lot. "She's going to crash!" "USAGI! HIT THE BRAKES!" All of the crowd, which consisted of Rei, Minako, Makoto, Ukari, Setsuna, and now Haruka, Michiru, Hotaru, Motoki, Unazuki, Naru, and Umino yelled. Somehow, Usagi's right foot managed to find the brakes, and she pressed it as hard as she could. The car went from a speed normally found on the highway to a dead stop in less than five seconds, stopping just inches from the dorm building. She, Mamoru, and Chibi-Usa all sprang forward in their seats, Chibi-Usa hitting the back of Mamoru's seat, Mamoru hitting the dashboard, and Usagi hitting the wheel. "Usagi!" Everyone started running toward the car. Inside the car, Usagi's hands were shaking so badly, she could barely breathe. She was dimly aware of Mamoru shifting the car into park, reaching over, and turning off the car. All four of them sat in silence for a moment, while their friends gathered around the car. Tears filled Usagi's eyes, and she closed them to allow them to run down her cheeks. "I can't do this." "Usagi?" Chibi-Usa whispered, a look of concern on her face. "I just can't do this!" Usagi suddenly screamed, startling everyone else in the car. Blindly, she fumbled with her seat belt until she got it off, threw open the car door hitting Haruka in the process, and stumbled out of the car. "Usako?" Mamoru reached over and tried to take her hand, but she waved him away. She got out, and started to run out of the parking lot toward River Road, which ran behind the dorm building. He immediately got out of the car, and started after her. "Usako!" "Mamoru-san!" Makoto reached out and grabbed his arm. Motoki was there as well, and placed a comforting arm around his friend. He scowled at both of them, and started to break free. "Mamoru-san, she doesn't need you right now," Ami said, as Rei started to follow Usagi. "You're probably the last person she wants to see right now." Somehow, Ami's words penetrated his mind, and Mamoru sighed in defeat. He watched helplessly as Usagi ran across River Road to the newly-opened park facing the river, where she collapsed onto a bench in tears. Chibi-Usa stood outside of the car, Hotaru hugging her, tears streaming down her face. "It's all my fault," Chibi-Usa whispered. "Gomen nasai, Usagi-chan. Gomen nasai." ********** Usagi barely noticed when Rei approached her. "Usagi?" she asked. "Go away," Usagi managed to say. "I don't feel like being insulted or made fun of, especially by you." She turned away from Rei. Rei lifted a hand to comfort her friend, then let it drop. "Fine, who needs to comfort a baka Odango Atama like you anyhow?" she said, with a slight sting in her voice. It got the effect she wanted. Now angry, Usagi turned on her best friend. "I'm not a baka! I'm not stupid! Everyone thinks I'm stupid and a total ditz! Look at Tsukino Usagi. She makes 30's on her tests! She can't write in kanji! She can plow her father's car into the side of a building!" Rei smiled. Anger, she knew, was always the key to releasing inner emotions. "You're not a baka, and you know it. You've got to be pretty smart, or the Dark Kingdom would have dusted us four years ago. The Black Moon would had taken over the planet, and Galaxia destroy the entire solar system. I don't see a ditz saving the world, but I see you, Usagi." Rei sat down on the bench next to Usagi. "I'll be honest with you, and never repeat it, but I'm jealous of you." Usagi gazed at Rei, her tears starting to dry. "Really?" Rei nodded, and gazed out across the street. "Take a look at the parking lot." Usagi's eyes followed Rei's. "See that man being virtually restrained by everyone? He happens to be your fianc饬 who most likely worships the ground you walk on. See the pink-haired girl with oval- shaped odango? She's upset. She's your daughter, Usagi, and she's worried sick about you. All of those people over there are your friends. You having a loving family who cares for you. You have a bright future. I have an empty shrine and Phobos and Deimos." "You have your dreams," Usagi said. "To be a wonderful singer, actress, and seiyuu. You want to be a superstar of international business. You want to be a bride to your beloved. You..." "Usagi, stop it!" Rei jumped to her feet, walked a few paces from the bench, then turned to face her again. "You are always doing this! Trying to make everyone else feel better. I'm trying to do the same for you. What I'm trying to say is that you have a lot going for you. You're a different person than you were four years ago. Your grades have gone up, you've actually gotten somewhat mature, and you can even write in kanji some. You're in college! I didn't think you would make it past junior high school, personally. You can drive if you set your mind to it." Usagi's gaze followed Rei's as she paced a few more steps, then faced Usagi again. "You have never let people try to influence the things you do. If you did, Hotaru would not be alive today, and probably all of us. Yet, lately, you have let everyone else's wants dictate what you do. Your father wished for you to go to college, so you put your life on hold to carry out his dream. Your mother wants you to drive, so you are willing to do that for her. You got so nervous trying to please Mamoru-san and your mother that you nearly got yourself, him, Chibi-Usa, and Chibi Chibi hurt. You're putting yourself on the back burner, and it shows. Try to just be Usagi again," Rei winked at her friend. "See what happens. But, don't sacrifice the studying, Odango Atama. At least keep that up." For the first time that day, Usagi laughed. Rei joined in with her. The wind picked up the musical sound of Usagi's laughter, and carried it across the street to her fianc駳 anxious ears. Mamoru visibly relaxed at the sound. Breaking free from Motoki and Makoto, he took off for the park in a full run with Chibi-Usa and the others behind him. Usagi stood up from her bench, and she and Rei were laughing with each other as they noticed the others running across the highway into the mark. Mamoru reached them first, swooped Usagi into a big hug, and Chibi-Usa attached herself to them. Everyone else crowded around the three, and chatted eagerly. Setsuna, the last of the group to reach the highway, immediately stopped as another blinding headache overtook her. She grabbed onto the post holding up the street sign and closed her eyes to try and block the pain. 'Traitor...traitor...traitor...' 'Leave me alone,' Setsuna thought, holding her head in silent agony. 'Please, whoever you are, leave me alone!" From in the park, Hotaru looked across the street while everyone else was fussing over Usagi. She frowned when she saw Setsuna's pain. Something was definitely wrong... ********** She was having the dream again. Setsuna found herself in her senshi uniform, standing by the Gates of Time. Alone as usual, she was surprised when the gates opened to reveal 20th century Tokyo. Setsuna approached the Gate entrance. Scenes of life in Tokyo flashed before her. Haruka, Michiru, and Hotaru were sharing a meal, talking and laughing together. Makoto was in her cooking classes, working with her partner, Aneko. Minako was busing tables at Azabu Sandwiches and Snacks. Rei was at the shrine, kneeling before the fire, startled momentarily by a customer wanting to purchase a love charm. Ami was on her computer, browsing the Internet and downloading music she enjoyed. Mamoru was working on that translating device Usagi had told her about. Suddenly, Usagi and Chibi-Usa appeared on either side of him, surprising him with a meal. Luna, Artemis, and Diana were walking down the street, Luna arguing with Artemis. Chibi Chibi trailed them, stopping to greet people she knew as they walked along. How she longed to be part of that world! Setsuna longingly reached her hand out. Friends...a family...a chance for a normal life...it was all right here at her reach.... 'You shall not touch.' Setsuna dropped her left hand, her right hand immediately tightening on the Garnet Rod. She swung it around, and brought it up in a defensive manner. "Who's there?" she said, aloud. 'You shall not join them, Meioh Setsuna,' the voice said. 'Your destiny is here. You have trespassed time long enough. You are forbidden to leave.' "I'm forbidden to have a life like everyone else?" Setsuna asked. "I can't live a normal life, not even for a little while?" 'We all must make sacrifices, Setsuna. This is yours.' "Onegai! Who are you? Tell me who you are!" Setsuna gazed around the area. 'I forever face you, Sailor Pluto. I always keep an eye on you. Wherever you go, whatever you do, I always watch you.' "Then stop it! I'm a grown woman, so leave me alone." 'You're obviously not grown if you make childish statements like wanting to live a normal life.' "What is so wrong about living a normal life for just a year or so? A YEAR!" Setsuna's voice rose, ending in a shout which rolled off across the expanses of time and space. 'You are already a traitor, don't you know, Setsuna? Your past actions do not make you look good among the those who installed you in your position to begin with.' "I was put here by the god Chronos himself," Setsuna said. "I have been here since the beginning of time. It would take the end to remove me." 'You think that, Setsuna? Well, think again...' "No...you can't do that!" Suddenly, the time door began to fade away, leaving Setsuna standing in nothing but sheer blackness. She could not even see her hands in from of her face. She felt the garnet rod being yanked from her grasp. She reached out for it. "NO!!!!!" "Setsuna! Setsuna!" She felt her shoulders being shaken. Her eyes flew open to find that her bedside lamp had been turned on at a low setting. Michiru was sitting on the edge of the bed, shaking her shoulders. Behind her in the doorway stood Haruka and Hotaru. Setsuna struggled into a sitting position, and noticed her nightgown was plastered to her skin, drenched in sweat. "That's some dream you had," Haruka commented without a smile. "Daijobu?" Michiru handed Setsuna a damp rag. She used it to wipe off her face, and laid it down on the comforter. "I'll be fine, it was just a dream," Setsuna told her friends. "More like a nightmare," Michiru said. "I'll be okay. Everyone has nightmares at times." "Not without some cause," Haruka said. "Something about you doesn't feel right, Setsuna." 'Traitor...you are not right...come we will finish our duel...' Setsuna threw the covers back. "I think I'm going to get up and work on those designs. I have to be ready for if the loan comes through, ne?" "It's 3 a.m. in the morning, Setsuna-momma," Hotaru pointed out. "I'll be fine. An early start to the day is the best way to get the most productivity." Setsuna got up, and walked over to her closet and started to pull out some clothes. Her friends simply watched and worried. ********** If he could survive this, he could survive anything. Mamoru sat beside Usagi, checking for about the fiftieth time to make sure his seat belt was secure around him. Driving lesson #5. Time to take a different approach. Standing on the front porch were Ikuko, holding Chibi Chibi, Chibi-Usa, and Shingo. It would be just the two of them on this lesson, something he was grateful for. Usagi turned the car on silently, not bothering to talk to him. He was used to it. She had been giving him the silent treatment for nearly three days now. The past three days had been full of lessons. Usagi had quickly gotten better, but had said nothing beyond what was considered cold politeness. What did I do wrong??? Mamoru gave Usagi a long look as she eased the gears back into REVERSE. I'm always the last to know everything. Usagi silently back the car out into the street, narrowly missing the garbage cans at the house across the street. Mamoru glanced up at the Tsukino house and swore he saw Shingo mutter something under his breath before handing a wad of cash to a very happy-looking Chibi-Usa. "You're doing well," he said pleasantly, trying to get her to talk somehow. "Arigato." Her voice was cold as ice. She kept her eyes focused straight on the road as she pulled to a stop at a red light. It turned green, but the driver across from her signaled a left turn. She flashed her lights to let the car pass. "So, where are we going?" Relax, relax, Mamoru tried to tell himself, prying his hand from the door handle. She's doing a good job. You've got to believe in her. "Where do you want to go?" "How about somewhere where we can talk?" Usagi shrugged. Despite her talk with Rei, her feelings were still hurt. I didn't want to do this in the first place, she thought. And look at Mamo-chan, he can't stand to be in trying to teach this to me. Is he that embarrassed of me? Am I always that embarrassing? Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring the road before her. "Usako, pull over. Now." Usagi mechanically pulled the car over to the side of the road, into an empty parking space. She managed to pull into the space and shut off the car before leaning her head on the steering wheel. She felt his hand reaching over and try to massage the tension out of her shoulders, and it felt incredibly good. She heard the seatbelt being released from its catch and whirl back against the door. "Come on, Usako, talk to me," Mamoru's voice was very gentle, soothing her frazzled nerves. "It's not like you to be this quiet." "Am I embarrassing to you?" Usagi whispered. He blinked. "Nani?" She sat up straight. "Do I embarrass you?" He thought back to several times in the past four years which had embarrassed the daylights out of him. "You have before, but not now. You've grown up a lot, Usako." Usagi glanced at him. "So I do embarrass you." "You have before, but you're human. The truth is, I'm very proud of you now." Usagi's eyes began to light up. "Really?" Mamoru nodded, a smile on his face. "Hai. You're in college, and you've saved us all countless times. You've really grown as a woman and a senshi. You're going to be a wonderful queen one day. And wife and mother." Usagi finally smiled, and he felt like praising the heavens. She closed her eyes and leaned toward him. He felt his heartbeat sped up as he leaned toward her. They couldn't remain here long. Just one simple kiss, and they would continue the driving lesson. One kiss...just one kiss...their lips passionately came together. From inside Crown's Game Parlor, Motoki stopped wiping the windows to see the windows of the car parked across the street begin to fog up. "Looks like someone out there's having a good time," he commented. Minako, who had just finished wasting her tokens on losing the new race car game, walked over to the window. "Now, Motoki-kun, it's not nice to spy on people," she lectured. "Yeah, Reika wouldn't like that," Unazuki teased her older brother, walking up to them. Minako squinted. "Say, isn't that Usagi-chan's car? You know, the one she's using to drive now that her father's gone?" Unazuki nodded. "I recognize that little rabbit charm suspending from the rearview mirror. You can just see it...," her voice died away. "If that's Usagi-chan's car, then the people in it fogging up the windows must be...," Motoki said, then an evil look appeared in his eyes. He gazed at Unazuki and Minako with a grin. "Say, I have an idea. Gather closely." ********** "Excuse me? Excuse me?" They ignored the voice and kept kissing. "This is the police, is everything okay in there?" Silence. Jerking away from Mamoru, Usagi hit her head on the car ceiling. She started to cry out, then quickly covered her mouth, noticing their disheveled appearance. Kami-sama, what happened to just one kiss, she thought. Kami-sama, what happened to just one kiss? Mamoru tried to jerk the seat back into an upright position, but it was hard with Usagi in his lap. How did she get in his lap to begin with? "Moshi moshi? Anyone in there?" "Hai! We're okay!" Usagi managed to crawl back into the driver's seat, noticing how much she was shaking. She tried straightening her clothes before noticing one of her odango had come loose, and half of her hair spilled over her right shoulder. Mamoru finally jerked his seat into an upright position and tried looking for his jacket, which had come off at one point as well. "Perhaps you should step out of the car? We need to make sure you're not drinking." "DRINKING?" Both of them cried at the same time. "Ah ha! So you have been drinking! Then, it's time for you to face the consequences!" Mamoru's door suddenly popped open, and three guns were aimed into the car. "FREEZE!" "YEAAAGGGGHHH!!" Both Usagi and Mamoru screamed before a squirt of water shot into the car, and hit Usagi in the face. She wiped it away to see a way too cheerful Motoki, Unazuki, and Minako standing around the car, aiming water pistols at you. "When I get done with you..." Mamoru growled to his best friend. "You're not even going to have a leg to stand on," Usagi growled to Minako. The three "policemen" simply burst out laughing. Mamoru yanked the door shut on them, Usagi started the car, and left the parking space as quickly as they could, their friends laughing merrily after them. ********** 'Traitor...listen to me...listen to me, DAMN YOU!' "NO!" Setsuna sprang up in bed, gasping for air. She tossed aside the thin blanket someone, Michiru probably, had pulled over her. She gazed around her room. She didn't even remember coming back here. Vague memories of Haruka literally prying her hands from her work and leading her into the bedroom floated back into her mind. Setsuna swung her feet over the side of the bed, and glanced at the clock sitting on the nightstand. 1:33. Shimatta. She had to reach the bank before 3 p.m. if she was going to learn the status of her load today. She got up and headed toward the front door. Thankfully, Haruka's car was gone. She and Michiru must had gone somewhere. Hotaru was still in school. Setsuna grabbed a sweater off the coat rack next to the door, and slid her feet into her shoes. 'So, where do you think you're going, Setsuna-chan?' "I'm going to make a life for myself," Setsuna said aloud, opening the door. She gazed up into the air, just in case the voice haunting her happened to be above her. "And don't call me Setsuna-chan." 'But of course....Setsuna-chan.' Setsuna slammed the door behind her and walked away from the house. She had relative peace for a few blocks before the voice decided to make its thoughts known to her again. 'Setsuna, Setsuna. What makes you think this will actually work?' "Because I'll make it work," Setsuna muttered, trying to make sure she didn't sound like a total lunatic to whoever was walking down the street. "You can't stop me from trying to make a life for myself. You can haunt me until I am dead for lack of sleep, but I'll never give up!" 'I can't stop you? Try me.' Suddenly, the world began to grow extremely out of focus. Setsuna stopped and blinked for a moment, then rubbed her eyes. Surely, he wasn't trying to alter her vision! She reached a crosswalk, and hit the button for the traffic light to change, then leaned against a post just as a blinding headache swept through her head. "YAMATE!" Setsuna screamed aloud. "YAMATE! LEAVE ME ALONE!" 'Not hardly. This is the consequences...consequences..." "NO!" Setsuna looked up to see her world was out of focus again, but saw the crosswalk light was red. Or was it green? The headache got worse until all it was all pain. All-consuming pain. She held her head in agony. 'See?' the voice said. 'I'm winning.' "Not by a long shot!" Setsuna stumbled into the road, not noticing the car heading toward her. All she could remember was that last blinding hit of pain the voice dealt her, and a very familiar-sounding scream as she hit the ground. ********** In the car, Usagi threw the gearshift into park. Her eyes were wide with shock. The traffic light had turned green, and she had started to go when all of a sudden, Setsuna stumbled out in front of the car. She had hit the brakes immediately, yet Setsuna still crumbled to the ground. "Oh Kami-sama!! Oh no!!! Mamo-chan, I hit Setsuna-san!" Usagi was growing more hysterical by the nano-second. "I didn't see her, I swear it! She came out of nowhere!" She promptly burst into tears. Mamoru quickly threw his car door open, and got out and over to Setsuna as fast as he could. The car bumper was just inches away from her thrashing form. Usagi, still shaking, managed to climb out of the car as well, and slowly approached them. "You didn't hit her, Usako." Mamoru quickly consoled her. "She collapsed from something." Usagi visibly relaxed, and knelt down next to Setsuna. "Setsuna-san! Daijobu? Gomen nasai for almost hitting you!" "Leave me alone!" Setsuna cried, flailing her arms out. Mamoru caught hold of them before she could hit Usagi. "Nani?" Usagi gasped. "She's having a hallucination of some sort," Mamoru said. "We've got to get her to a hospital. I don't have my cell phone with me to call an ambulance." Usagi looked up to see a car pulling over to the side of the road. She immediately stood up. Inside the car, she could see a woman holding a black object in her hands, dialing something on a keypad, then aimed it at their direction. "Mamo-chan, I think that lady has a cell phone," she said, running across the street. The car window rolled down just as Usagi reached it. "Onegai," she said to the woman inside. "My friend is really sick, can you help us get her to the hospital?" "Your friend? How sweet of you to have so much hope for her, Tsukino Usagi." Usagi took several steps away from the car. Misora...she thought, reaching in her pocket for her brooch. In horror, she realized her brooch was in her purse on the front seat of the car. The door flew open, and Misora's arm suddenly came out. She threw a glass vial in the direction of Mamoru, Setsuna, and the car. "MAMO-CHAN!" Usagi screamed, whirled around, and ran toward them. Mamoru looked up just before the vial hit him, and immediately covered Setsuna with his body. The vial hit the car, and its contents began to spill over the body. "Jyutai-chan, come out!" Misora got out of her car, and leaned against it. Kenji's car transformed itself into a youma with tires for its hands and feet. Usagi's face went pale, and she knelt down beside Mamoru and Setsuna. "My brooch is in the car," Usagi whispered to them. "I can't transform!" "We can't transform here anyhow," Mamoru whispered back. "We need the other senshi." "But, if we destroy the car, we destroy my brooch as well," Usagi told him. She stood up. "I've got to get it back!" She took off toward the car. "Usako, don't!" Mamoru jumped to his feet, but it was too late. Usagi was running toward the youma, and leapt at the driver's side car door. "Baka girl....GET HER!" Misora yelled at the youma. "How can I get her if she's grabbing onto my ear?" The youma yelped out in pain. "It's a car door, you baka," Usagi muttered under her breath, managing to squeeze herself through the window on the driver's side. The youma raised itself on its two back tires, and Usagi grabbed the steering wheel to try and prevent from falling into the back seat. "HEY! YOU! OVER HERE!" Mamo-chan? Usagi tried to see out one of the windows, but could only see Misora still leaning against her car at the side of the road. She reached on the floor and grabbed her purse. "I bet you couldn't get me if you tried," Mamoru's voice rang through the air. She realized then he was trying to distract the youma so she could get out safely. "I couldn't?" Jyutai-chan sneered at him. Suddenly, the car jerked to one side as it raised its right front tire arm. Usagi landed against the driver's side door, which popped open, and she fell out onto the ground. Jyutai-chan whirled around. It looked up at Misora expectantly. Misora had out a black remote control, and it was beeping loudly. "Yes, she has the most powerful hopeful soul! Get her first!" "With pleasure!" Before anyone could move, the youma had leapt on top of Usagi. "What are you doing?" Usagi tried to push the youma away, but it was too heavy. Then, the youma latched its mouth onto Usagi's and began to suction her hopeful soul from her. Mamoru had been standing in sheer shock from Usagi falling out of the car, then the youma jumping on top of her. He saw what it was doing to Usagi. "Oh lord...USAKO!" He hollered. This gave Misora the opening she was looking for. Tossing her control into her car, she ran toward Mamoru. He looked up, and seeing her, grabbed a tree branch off the ground to defend himself. She threw herself at him and knocked him off balance and to the ground, the tree branch between them. "This vial and that branch you're holding will make a lovely combination," Misora said. Mamoru tried pushing the woman off, but somehow, she was using his branch to hold him down. "Let her go," he begged. "If you want someone's hopeful soul, get mine. Just let her go!" "Don't worry, you'll join your pretty girlfriend soon enough," Misora said, pulling the plug out of the vial with her teeth, and holding it over the branch. Mamoru stilled. If he pushed her off now, the liquid inside the vial would spill, and another youma would be created. Helplessly, he looked over at Usagi, and his heart stopped. She had stopped fighting the youma, and her body was growing extremely pale. "Usako," he whispered. From the street corner, Setsuna grabbed on to the crosswalk sign for support, and pulled out her henshin wand. "PLUTO CRYSTAL POWER...MAKE-UP!" Nothing happened. "Shimatta!" Setsuna yelled aloud. Henshin wand in hand, she gazed around the street. "Damn you! Damn you to hell, whoever you are! You're going to sacrifice our princess because of some vendetta against me? Save the princess, sacrifice me!" "Chibi Chibi?" Setsuna looked down to see Chibi Chibi, her hands stretched toward hers. Remembering what Haruka and Michiru said about their power-ups, she took hold of the child's hands. They both started to glow. Setsuna could feel the power starting to well up inside her. 'You shall not be permitted to perform as a Sailor Senshi.' Suddenly, Chibi Chibi was jerked into the air, breaking the link between the two. The little girl was hurled a few feet away, landing in the middle of the fight. "Chibi Chibi!" Mamoru exclaimed, seeing her. Misora glanced over at the child, and it gave Mamoru the chance he needed. Grabbing the vial, he plugged it quickly with his thumb as he tossed Misora off of him. Struggling to his feet, he found the cork capping the top of the vial, and plugged it in before slipping it in his jacket pocket. Lifting his hand into the air, he quickly materialized a rose, and transformed into Tuxedo Kamen. Meanwhile, Usagi felt her body start to grow weaker and weaker. As it did, more and more thoughts crowded into her mind and started to overwhelm her. "Usagi no baka...never good at anything," Rei's voice sounded in her mind. "Only a baka would want to use two feet for the gas and the brake pedals," Chibi-Usa's voice added. "Usagi, you are so hopeless when it comes to cooking," Makoto's voice joined the group. "You will never learn how to drive. I don't know why I put up with you," Mamoru's voice, the strongest of them all, drowned out all the other shouts. Not you too...Mamo-chan, Usagi felt the fight go out of her, and she went limp. Kamen saw her, and it scared him deep into his soul. I don't have any power to help you. Usako...Kamen extended his cane and headed toward the youma. With one flick of a tire arm, it sent Kamen hurling across the street into a lamp post. Meanwhile, Chibi Chibi had struggled to her feet, and was heading toward Setsuna again. But, she wasn't fast enough. Misora scooped her up in her arms, and held the little girl in the air. "Tuxedo Kamen! Should I say Chiba Mamoru?" Kamen and Setsuna both stood still in shock. "I know who you are! Too bad your pretty little girlfriend over there has no clue. What a shame she'll never know now. Maybe next time, you ought to be more careful when transforming on public highways." Misora's grip tightened on Chibi Chibi. "SPARKLING WIDE PRESSURE!" A jolt of energy suddenly hurled toward Misora, and knocked Chibi Chibi out of her arms. Kamen rushed forward and caught the little girl before she hit the ground. "MERCURY AQUA RHAPSODY!" A wall of water was sent hurling toward the youma, stunning it. Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter ran down the block, Jupiter preparing another attack as she ran. "JUPITER FORREST ILLUMINATION!" She sent it hurling toward the youma, knocking it off of Usagi. "Tuxedo Kamen-sama! Give Chibi Chibi to Setsuna!" Mercury called. Kamen nodded, and held the little girl out. Setsuna immediately reached for her. 'You are not worthy!' Suddenly, Setsuna found herself being thrown back against the closest building. "Setsuna-san!" Kamen ran to her, then found himself knocked back as well. He landed on his back, his arms shielding Chibi Chibi on top of him. "There's some force keeping us from reaching her," he whispered. "Minna, we are in a heap of trouble here," Jupiter called into her communicator, then turned to face Misora, who was struggling to her feet, her right hand clutching her left wrist. "You are not getting away this time." Mercury snapped her visor on, and focused it on Usagi. "Oh Kami-sama...," she thought. "SHINE AQUA ILLUSION! Jupiter! Leave her for now! We've got to save Usagi!" Jupiter whirled around. "SUPREME THUNDER!" Kamen suddenly had an idea about Setsuna. If the person trying to keep Chibi Chibi from reaching Setsuna couldn't see them, then maybe they had a chance. He struggled to his feet. "Sailor Mercury! Use your Shabon Spray!" Mercury nodded. "SHABON SPRAY!" An instant fog covered the area. Kamen launched forward with Chibi Chibi again. Chibi Chibi reached her hands out, and they came into contact with Setsuna's. 'Bah, where is the brat?' The voice sounded in Setsuna's head. "You won't get me this time!" Setsuna felt her wand change into a brooch, and knew the power transfer was complete. "PLUTO CRYSTAL POWER, MAKE-UP!" Sailor Star Pluto emerged from the dying fog. Misora was gone, but that wasn't important right now. She lifted the garnet rod, and felt the new energy gather within. "CHRONUS TYPHOON!" Pluto sent out a whirlwind that quickly decimated the youma. It left behind a sparkling cloud of gold dust hanging over Usagi's head. Kamen rushed over to Usagi, and pulled her into his arms. "Usako...Usako, wake up!" His voice trembled and his hands shook as he tried to wake her up. "What is that?" Jupiter asked Mercury, trying to remain as calm as possible. Mercury had her visor on again, and was analyzing the dust. Her eyes opened wide with in surprise. "That's Usagi-chan's hopeful soul," Mercury whispered. Usagi's breath had dropped from steady to shallow, but it was enough. Slowly, the dust moved back into its owner's body. Kamen felt her cold body grow warmer. The others noticed her skin slowly regaining its color. Pluto, Jupiter, and Mercury slowly approached Kamen and Usagi, Chibi Chibi now in Jupiter's arms. Usagi's breathing grew more steady. Finally, she tried to open her eyes before throwing her arm over them to shield them from the sunlight. She turned her body so her face was buried in Kamen's chest. "Onegai, Luna," she mummered. "Just a few more minutes of sleep? I'll get up then. I promise!" Everyone gazed at each other, not knowing how to react. Tears slowly fell down Kamen's cheeks, and he glanced down at Usagi, embarrassed to be showing such an emotional reaction. His body started shaking. Then, suddenly his pent-up laughter rang through the air. Mercury, Jupiter, Pluto, and Chibi Chibi joined in, waking Usagi from the last stages of her unconsciousness. She blinked a couple of times, and stared at all of them. "Nani nani?" she whispered. "What's so funny?" All of them stared at Usagi. Then, in relief, they laughed even harder. Usagi closed her eyes. I will never, ever, ever understand my friends, she thought as exhaustion claimed her, and she fell asleep. ********** "Hino-san," Misora leaned against her kitchen wall, trying to tape up her injured wrist while balancing the portable phone on her other shoulder. "I found out the identity of Tuxedo Kamen. A graduate student by the name of Chiba Mamoru." She listened for a moment, while she finished taping up the wrist. "No, there was no Sailor Moon this time. I got his girlfriend though, and the transfer of the hopeful soul was complete, but the youma was killed at the very end. Not all of the senshi were there this time. Don't worry. We'll find all of the senshi and their allies soon enough. Two is a good start." ********** Days later, Hotaru and Chibi-Usa walked down the street, bypassing familiar stores such as Osa-P. However, next door to the jewelry shop was a brand new seamstress shop. Setsuna's dream had finally come true. "Sugoi!" Chibi-Usa said as they walked in the door, where everyone else was putting the last touches on the store. Makoto was setting out a feast fit for a king on the front counter for the grand opening in just an hour. Rei and Minako were arranging examples of Setsuna's clothing on dress dummies in the window. Ami was at a new computer, setting up the bookkeeping system. Haruka was finishing stocking the shelves of cloth. Michiru had taken some paints and was painting a lovely design in the front window to attract customers. Setsuna rearranged one of the outfits on a dummy, trying not to show her nervousness. Hotaru ran over to Setsuna. "Are you excited, Setsuna- momma?" "Just a little," Setsuna lied. She looked more rested than she had in weeks. "You look good," Ami commented, glancing up from the computer. "I'm glad you're getting more sleep lately." "Trust me, so am I," Setsuna agreed. Ever since she gained her power-up, the mysterious voice had stopped haunting her. She could not figure out for the life of her who it was, or what it was doing to her. Something was preventing her from looking to the future to see the events to come that were causing this. That scared her to death. Setsuna messed with a scarf accenting a dress. She had a feeling something major was about to happen. In fact, she knew of events to come in the next few months that would deeply shake the senshi and change their lives. But, as for her own destiny, it was like a block had been placed in a certain part of her mind, and she could not see further than what was going on today in regards to her own life. She prayed that whatever happened in her own life would not disturb the sequence of time. But, I will not think of this out, Setsuna thought. This is my chance to lead a normal life, even if just for a little while. No matter how long this lasts, I will always treasure it. "Minna! Minna!" An excited voice broke through Setsuna's thoughts, and everyone looked up from what they were doing to see an excited Usagi run through the door with a harried Mamoru following her. She waved a plastic card in the air. "I did it! I did it! I got my driver's license!" Usagi exclaimed, happily. Rei, Minako, Makoto, and Ami quickly gathered around Usagi along with Chibi-Usa and Hotaru. "Congratulations, Usagi-san!" Michiru called over from her artwork. Haruka grinned at Mamoru, who had moved to stand near the bolt shelves. "You look like you could use a drink," she commented. Haruka climbed down off the ladder, and gave Mamoru a hearty slap on the back. "Let's go break into the champagne a little early. You deserve it." Usagi broke through the crowd and came to Setsuna. "I'm so happy for you, Setsuna-san!" she said. "We both came out winners, Usagi-san," Setsuna said, nodding in agreement. "See? You can succeed in anything you do, if you try hard enough," Rei commented. Minako poked her. "Since when did you get so wise, Rei-chan?" she asked. "I've always been wise!" Rei replied. Minako snorted. Rei scowled. "Now, what's that suppose to mean?" "Usagi?" Chibi-Usa grabbed Usagi's arm. "Hotaru-chan and I want to go to that new mall on the edge of town. Can you drive us there?" "Sure! We had to put Poppa's car in the shop after the youma attack." Usagi looked over at Mamoru. "Mamo-chan? Can I borrow you car for a few hours? Onegai?" All the color drained from Mamoru's face. He quickly turned to Haruka. "So, how about that drink, Haruka?" "MAMO-CHAN!!!" Usagi and Chibi-Usa cried, then suddenly he found himself caught between the two as they started arguing with him. Setsuna looked around the store. Michiru had just finished her painting, and Haruka quickly crossed the store to admire it. Rei and Minako were arguing about wisdom. Ami and Makoto had gone back to doing their previous jobs. Hotaru was watching the argument among Usagi, Chibi-Usa, and Mamoru over the use of his car. Outside the window, she could see Chibi Chibi coming toward the store flanked by Luna, Artemis, and Diana. This was her life. It was crazy, and filled with so many people she did not know what to do with. She was the senshi of time, yet now she could easily be surprised at the events which could unfold without warning. It was loud, cheerful, quiet, and sad. It was a confusing mess. It was the inner senshi and the outers along with their friends. It was good times and bad, parties and battles. Setsuna could not ask for anything more. She smiled. She loved her new normal life. AUTHOR'S NOTES: Okay, here comes the thank yous! Thanks goes to Andrea for putting this story up on ASMR and Bethany-chan and Serenity Raye for putting it up at Moon Bunny's Closet. Thanks goes to the "Talented" Sailor Jupiter for all of her support! Wyvern also deserves kudos for her support, and they both write great fan fic! (Go read it!) New thank yous go out to Beholder, whose new series I love, and to everyone who has e-mailed me. Your comments are so kind, and I really love them and try to respond to them when I can. 1) Japanese terms used in this episode...will now be found on my website at http://www.geocities.com/collegesenshi. I complied a comprehensive list of Japanese terms from several different sites (Especially from Moon Bunny's Closet located at http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/9333. Thank you Bethany and Serenity Raye! Please, go check out their site!) 2) The parking lot and dorm building described in this episode is the dorm I live in at college. It is a large dorm and a huge parking lot, the perfect place for Usagi to learn how to drive. And no, I did not almost ram my car into the dorm.... Anyhow, the park that Usagi runs to after nearly causing a wreck really does exist, however the name of the highway was changed from River Road to something new last year. The park, River Road Park, does exist overlooking the Black Warrior River, and it is gorgeous. 3) Setsuna and the voice...the voice will definitely be coming back. Those of you good in astronomy will probably have already guessed the name of the voice though. There is one specific clue in the episode that good eyes will catch. 4) Chronos Typhoon is an attack Setsuna has used since the Infinity Arc in the manga, but not in the anime, which is why I gave her this power for her power-up. I learned the day after posting the fifth episode to ASMR that Uranus and Neptune do have new powers for their Sailor Star forms in the Stars arc in the manga, so I will be working those into a future episode very soon.
