A Sailor Moon Expanded Project Successions of Power By Doug Helm Rated : PG Chapter 1 : Homeward Bound "Answer the question!" Arachne demanded. The Moon Cat from Jupiter twitched her tail in exasperation, "I could be out hunting," she muttered to herself. "You've already scared the three cats who are on this ship... Now come on, why'd you come to the Moon with us?" Juno McCloud, who would one day be known as Kino Makoto, questioned. She was using a desperate attempt to stave off having to go through today's political lesson with Arachne. Arachne sighed in resignation, "Moon Cats were created to advise the Senshi. How am I going to advise MY Senshi if they are on the moon?" With that Arachne fixed Younger Jupiter with a measured look of impatients. They were supposed to be conducting a lesson on the political structure of Jupiter. Juno didn't have any real response for that. She glanced around the small room she had been assigned on board the ship that was taking herself and her aunt, the Elder Jupiter, home. The room was big enough for two people to sleep and there was a small area for Arachne to rest as well. The dark wood was highlighted with specks of light blue and red, Juno couldn't remember where the wood was from but it was her last delaying tactic. "Where is the wood from?" Arachne didn't fall for it though, "Back to the lesson, now who is the Lord Councillor?" Realizing she just couldn't put off the lesson she said, "Lord Councillor is moderator for the Clan Council and second only in political power to the Royal Family." Arachne nodded approval, "See, it's not so hard. Now what is the Clan Council?" "The Clan Council is a body made up of all the clan leaders, excluding the Earth Colony Leader, who deal with matters of government and clan interest on a day to day basis." "Very good! Why were you trying to get out of this lesson?" "Politics is so..." Juno shrug in frustration, "I don't see why two people that disagree can't go at each other with their fists and the one that isn't beaten to a pulp is right." "Law of the Jungle and that sort of thing? There are records that indicate that some of the first settlements on Jupiter were run in that fashion, but you are a Sailor Senshi, about to take over as Sailor Jupiter for the Elder Jupiter, you can't resort to such barbarious acts." Arachne stopped her uncharacteristic tirade and continued, "Let's steer a little away and try a social question. What is `Fostering'?" Juno sat silently for several seconds a blank look on her face. Arachne again sighed, she really wanted to be out hunting. Sure the male cat's on this ship generally didn't like her but it was certainly one way to pass the time... That and Artemis wasn't there; a smile slide across her face and a mild but seductive purr emitted from her. Oh that Artemis was some mover... She hadn't caught him yet, but when she did. "...Artemis." Arachne snapped her head around looking for the Venusian Moon Cat but only found Juno and Ariel who had entered the room. "Pardon?" Arachne asked, "Did you say something?" "Yes I did." Ariel McKinnin, Elder Jupiter, said, "I said you were probably dreaming of Artemis... One of your very few misses." Arachne glared at Ariel. Her build was compact, she only stood five feet even. Her flame red hair was neatly tied back into a single pony tail that fell to her waist. Her face had a slightly angular nature, not sharp featured but a little hawkish. Grey eyes stared back at Arachne who blinked. "As I was saying what is `Fostering'?" Arachne tried to move the conversation away from her and onto the subject at hand. Again there was silence until Ariel said, "Fostering is the practice of sending a child from one clan to the other. Usually this was to promote the learning of skills that were either not present in the current clan or to learn a different way of doing things. There are occasions when Fostering is used for political reasons but in today's era it is very rare." "Thank you... Now if you'll excuse me I have something to do." With that the white Persian hoped off the table and walked out of the room. Ariel closed the door after her and sat down on her bunk. "You were fostered weren't you?" Juno asked, although she knew the older woman was her father's sister she couldn't understand how they had different names. There were ways but her grandfather had been very faithful to his wife so it was highly unlikely. "Yes... why?" The tone was pleasant and Ariel seemed to be in a rather good mood. This was strange given she'd been moping about the ship since they left the Moon. "I just wondered why you have a different name then my father." "Given the reasons why I was fostered to the McKinnin clan I took their clan name. I grew up with them for most of my life and it just seemed natural when I was asked." "Is that why my father dis... er... seems to fight with you?" Juno couldn't believe her luck. Usually this was a topic that was off limits. It certainly was with her father, who was quick to stem any such questions. Ariel chuckled while shaking her head, "Yes Juno, your father and I have had these fights before. He thinks I should come back into the clan because I am truly of McCloud stock and only McKinnin by name." "Then why..." Juno was cut off by Ariel holding up her hand. "Because I am more McKinnin then McCloud. Our views about Earth for one are vastly different. Not all Earthers are bad but I share Lord McKinnin's views..." Ariel fixed Juno with a stern expression before saying, "And you're not to go repeating that to your father." They sat in silence for several seconds, Ariel didn't blink, didn't even move until Juno nodded her head in agreement. Ariel then stretched out on her bunk and gave a small smile. Juno was stunned, she couldn't understand how her aunt could do that. Juno had tried on several occasionals and only partially succeeded. "It will be good to get home though." Ariel said but her comment was lost on Juno who was wrapped up in her own thoughts. Chapter 2 : Arrival Manse Everard scanned the crowed, god he hated being out in public like this. Manse thought, Swinging his gaze over the platform where they stood waiting for the ship to land Manse noticed that Eric, Korric's oldest son and heir to the throne, looking as bored as he felt. Eric was by nature a hard working person, big and burly. The oldest son had gotten a nick name of "Ox"; it wasn't far off the mark. Eric's green eyes looked out from the glasses that were seated squarely on his nose. Irritatedly the eldest son brushed a lock of his brown hair out of his face, he wore it shorter than most of his brothers following his grandfather's example. Manse slid his gaze slightly to see who was keeping an eye on Eric, and frowned. There was only Eric's younger bother Conner. Manse was about to start covertly looking for Duncan, Conner's shadow when the ship finally came into sight. The gathered throng sent up a cheer, Ariel was a very popular person. Not to say that Juno wasn't either but Ariel had a larger following, she tended to think rather then fight her way out of situations. After another five minutes the ship was docked and the gang plank was lowered. First out of the hatch was Arachne; the Jovian Moon Cat looking almost thankful that the trip was over. Next down the gang plank was Ariel. The crowd sent up a cheer that made Manse jerk slightly, He started planning out escape routes. Juno received just as warm a welcome from the crowd if not as vocal, they had to be careful. Unlike Ariel, Juno was the daughter of the king and making crude remarks was not healthy. Juno was surprised to see the crowd waiting to greet them and it was only out of instinct that she kept upright and moving. "I welcome you back Elder and Younger Jupiter in the name of King Korric, my father." Eric's deep baritone voice boomed out over the crowed. "Thank you Your Highness." Ariel bowed slightly, "It is good to be home." Ariel stepped aside slightly and waving to Juno said, "May I present to you Younger Jupiter." Juno followed suite and bowed slightly, then promptly blushed. A hint of mirth flashed through Eric's eyes before he said, "Welcome home, you have grown strong I see." Manse didn't hear Juno's reply, his attention was focused on Ariel. She was trying to covertly look around for somebody and keep the appearance of listening with interest to Eric and his younger sister exchange greetings. Jovians not being ones for long standing ceremonies, the welcome ended after only five minutes. And Manse was now face to face with Ariel. Stepping down the stairs of the platform he lead her to a coach and did not speak until they were underway. "I see you have kept well." "Yes thank you Everard, I hope that you have tried to keep my father out of trouble?" Manse was silent for a few seconds before saying, "Ariel, something is going to happen. I know it, Lord McKinnin is planning something and he hasn't told me anything which makes me worry." Ariel regard Manse a long time before saying, "Would he be foolish enough to try and stop the succession?" Manse jerked as if struck, "No... no McKinnin might want to stop the new Earth treaty from going through the council but to stop the succession? How could he?" "Now Everard you know I can't tell you," Ariel smiled, "But I will tell you this much, if my father does figure out a way it'll be a neat trick." Chapter 3 : Home Ariel stepped out of the coach and let her gaze travel up and down the sturdy stone structure that had been her home for many years. It's outer walls and the two great pillars that sat on either side of the door, would by Earth standards, be considered to have the "rugged" look to them. As she approached the door it was opened and Lord McKinnin himself stepped out and bowed. Ariel cocked an eyebrow. McKinnin was known for being informal so why the show now. "Greetings, I am happy to see you back." McKinnin said while straightening. His features were more rounded. The body was too plump for his five foot three inch stature. There was however a sturdiness about him that seemed as solid as rock. "Please, come in. I'd like to catch up on the news." "Thank you father, I was expecting you to be sitting in council today." Ariel said. She noted the scowl that crossed her father's face briefly. "Ariel, I'll let you get settled back into your rooms first. Politics can wait for the moment. Here I am wanting to discuss my favourite subject and you've not even seen your room." Ariel nodded her thanks, picked up her bags and walked slowly through the hallway towards her room. The dwelling on the inside was every bit what an Earther might expect for a clan lord of Jupiter. The occasional statue, or picture filled the many nooks along the winding halls. Ariel smiled, her tree was still growing. It always was a conversation piece. Her father had planted that when she'd been chosen for the Senshi training. Now it's leafy branches stretched upwards and nearly filled the small alcove that it was planted in. After Ariel had put away her bags she returned to where her father would be, his den. Knocking softly she entered when he waved her in. She had always liked this den, it's rich smelling scent always brought a comforting image to her. The large red oak desk was the dominant piece of furniture. One wall held a small shelf with a few books. A globe of Jupiter sat in one corner. She slid comfortably into a chair beside the desk and waited, something was bothering her father and she wanted to know what it was. "I would have been in council today but McCloud decided to adjourn the council till after HIS daughter takes the office of Sailor Jupiter." McKinnin turned from the window he had been facing to look at his daughter, "If I had proposed any such thing it would have been shot down by McCloud in a second." "Father, I'm sure his Majesty had a reason. Juno is the youngest by far to be taking on the mantle of Jupiter. She is all but thirteen Earth years. Perhaps my brother wanted to bolster Juno's confidence?" McKinnin flopped down into the chair behind his desk and was silent for several minutes before he said, "It just irritates the hell out of me. Damn it! With you out of place and Korric having another card in his hand... Have you heard about the Earther colony?" Ariel shook her head, "I sent Manse over there, apparently they were having trouble with some animal eating there crops. He came back and said they wouldn't talk to anyone but a clan lord or Korric himself!" McKinnin thumped his desk, "So I go out there an you'll never believe it." "Let me guess? Frosh Beetle?" McKinnin nodded, "Yes, bloody stupid asses; So first time I go out and take a look I ask them `What did you do with the weeds?' They pulled the bloody things up!" Ariel shook her head, "After they were told not to?" "Yes, so I said you'd have to go into town and buy some weeds and lay them out. Not four days later some fellow comes barging in here demanding I go take another look. So I did, sure enough there was a Frosh Beetle eating the crops. He was going to kill it but wanted to make sure it was legal." Ariel snorted, "Was he new here?" "Yes..." McKinnin chuckled, "So I told him it was a Frosh Beetle and if he was smart he'd pen it up and feed it any weeds he could get. He says to me, `What in the name of Earth would I want to keep a giant bug!' Apparently he hadn't found out that Frosh Beatles will produce frozen milk if you feed them weeds." McKinnin saw the look on Ariel's face and said, "No, asked me if I wanted it. I've got my quota but I told the colony leader and he'd have to handle it... blundering ass!" Ariel just giggled, she could just picture the scene. ****** Juno was home, it didn't take her long to settle back into the loving atmosphere that surround the McCloud house hold. Juno was slightly disappointed that her father didn't meet her but she knew that he would have if he had been able to. Eric would do nicely though, as her oldest brother Eric had a tendency to be parental towards her. Juno had on more then one occasion beat the over protectiveness out of her burly brother, it was a tribute to his caring but also very annoying that he kept it up even under Juno's most livid protests. As she unpacked in her room something, correction, someone bound into the room and enfolded her in a large hug. Given the time of day and the short stature of the person it could only be one person. "Europa!" Juno said, trying to feign surprise, "Boy I was gone for two years I thought my little sister would be taller then me." Europa glared slightly at Juno after releasing her sister from the hug, "I'm only eleven what do you expect!" "I was just kidding." "I don't need that, I get enough of it from Philip." Europa huffed out and plopped down on Juno's bed, "That snot nose little twerp grew more then five inches and I only managed one." "Philip is also two years older than you. Don't worry, you're already taller than Aunt Ariel is." Europa wrinkled her brow slightly before saying, "Ariel? Do I know an Ariel?" She ducked a good natured swipe Juno sent her way and giggled, "I see YOU survived Aunt Ariel's training regime... So how far can you run?" It was Juno's turn to frown, "We haven't gone running in a while. I've also been rather busy this past bit... For some reason I have the feeling Aunt Ariel and I are going to go for one last run." Europa was about to respond when a knock sound. Turning around Juno saw it was Eric looking not very pleased. Juno became aware that Europa was now hiding behind her. "Eric what's up?" "Europa's time... Father's looking for her." Turning his attention to his youngest sister Eric said, "I suggest you go to his study and wait outside, this time." Eric then fixed Europa with a glare and crossed his arms. Europa scurried from the room but a heart beat latter poked her head back into the room and stuck her tongue out at Eric. Juno giggled which caused Eric to turn around but Europa was out of sight by then. "Scamp," Eric said, "I don't think you'll be seeing much of her over the next couple of days." "What's she done." Juno asked putting the last of her clothes away, "From your tone it's pretty serious." Eric chuckled and close the door, "Yeah, but you're not to say anything. I'll tell since it's a `public' secret. Europa is having a bout of `puppy love'." "Your kidding!" Juno said incrediously, "With who?" "Philip." Eric started to chuckle as Juno's face twisted as her brain tried vainly to believe, "Yes `The' Philip. Or as Europa's calling him, `Snot nosed little twerp' were I believe her exact words." "Well that is something new." "Enough about our sister, how have you been. You've said very little in your letters." "Oh I'm sorry Eric... This past year or so has been so crazy. I've been trying desperately to keep up with everything." "Why not slow down? You can't say Aunt Ariel's been pushing you, I've heard her say that you could take it a little slower." "This is important to Poppa... I need to do this, to prove that I can." Juno said with venom, "I have to prove that I'm not that young!" "Whoa! I'm not the enemy Juno... I'm just saying that it wouldn't hurt to slow down a little. You've pushed yourself to try and get to this point. In a few days it'll be over." Eric was shocked as his sister slowly sunk to the bed and covered her face. He walked over and sat down beside her. Wrapping one arm around her he tried to support her. "Eric... I'm terrified, can you believe it? Me..." "Yes I can Juno, what you're going to be doing is a scary job. I'm sure that Aunt Ariel was scared too. Have you told her this?" "No, I don't know. She's had something occupying her the last couple of months. I've tried to talk to her but she never really picks up the hints." "Juno, she's probably thinking of her marriage after you take over." "Marriage?" Juno looked surprised, "I didn't know she was going to marry..." Eric just shook his head, "Juno, maybe you should talk to her, now before you burn yourself out." Juno just bit her lower lip. Chapter 4 : Last Trip Korric McCloud did something that always amazed people. He moved his six foot seven inch burly frame softly towards the shadowed female figure. As he approached he recognized his sister, she had returned two day ago and he hadn't seen her, until now. "Greeting's brother." Korric came up short and whispered out, "How? What in Jupiter's Thunder are you doing here... At this hour of the morning with a bucket of," Korric took a step closer, "Water?" "Hello My Lord." The distinct female voice of Aranche purred out, "We're here to get your daughter up for one last training trip." "Yes... well..." Korric scowled slightly, "I want to know your opinion. Will you accept her for the office?" Ariel looked shocked, "I am not free to say yet. The council has not met and my decision must be put before the entire council." "I will see that they are gathered in three days." With that gruffly said Korric stalked down the hall. Ariel turned to Aranche and looked down at her, "Well what was that all about?" Aranche shrugged as best a moon cat could. Ariel slowly opened the door and stepped inside, Aranche followed but at a distance, she had no wish to get wet. ****** Younger Jupiter breathed deeply in, they were sitting atop a mound of rock in a small glade. The small glade was encircled by thick jungle like trees. Their leathery leaves occasional made a gentle slapping motion as the wind played through them. They had gone for a early, in Younger Jupiter's opinion excessively early, morning run. Now it was about mid day and they had stopped to rest. She turned and noticed that Elder Jupiter was watching something intently. Younger Jupiter tried to see what it was but it was out of her view. "What do you see?" Elder Jupiter held up her hand and slowly backed up to perch beside her niece, "There's something behind those bushes, I can't tell what it is but it's been watching us for a while." "Let's see what it is." Younger Jupiter whispered back, she could feel her blood start pounding slightly, "Finally some action!" "We will approach this carefully." Elder Jupiter admonished and slid slowly off of the rock, "You go to the left I'll swing right. Remember DO NOT attack it unless it attacks first." Younger Jupiter gave a scowl but slid off to the left, she would have preferred to charge it from the front to see what it was, this sneaking around just wasn't for her. Slowly she entered the tree line and quickly lost sight of her aunt. Stopping only a moment to get her bearing she swung inwards and then towards where Elder Jupiter would be coming from. Younger Jupiter felt the tug of the undergrowth on her legs as they were near the edge it wasn't that bad but deeper in the undergrowth became a tangled mass of various plants, some of them poisoness. As she was drawing closer she could see the first hints of this creature. It's skin was craggy and looked tough. It's back arched up into a sharp curve that rose up about four feet. The lower portions as well as the head were hidden. Younger Jupiter paused for a moment as a thick neck snaked past some plants and showed its armored skull, two sucken solid blue eyes peered towards Jupiter... She could just barely see the greenish breath coming out of the slack jawed maw. Younger Jupiter tryed to search her memories of what the thing might be when it started to move. She reacted without thinking, drawing on her power Younger Jupiter fired off her attack. It hit the large target squarely and caused the creature to roar in anger. "Uh oh!" Younger Jupiter thought. The distictive roar of anger let her know exactly what creature she had just irritated. As she stated to scream a warning she saw it start moving faster, "Mykor!" Younger Jupiter yelled and took off at a run. Mykor were nasty things, they would eat anything, including people. The thick undergrowth was making it hard for Younger Jupiter to run safely, she could heard the Mykor crashing through the bushes behind her, gaining. The only other thing she could hear was her own heart beat. Younger Jupiter thought desperately as she ran around a small tree, her heart sunk down as she heard the Mykor simply run over the minor obstical. Younger Jupiter was about to try and attack the Mykor again when she heard one of Elder Jupiter's attack calls. Elder Jupiter calling out, "Thunder Ball!" was sweet music to Younger Jupiter who had common sense and turned, half slid off to the left. She scrambled behind a large tree and was just in time to catch a glimpse of the Mykor as it's skin was punctured by the large energy ball. The creature reared once and then exploded outwards. The sticky greenish-black blood spattered everywhere, and a ghastly odor started to mix with the fresh air in the day's rising tempreture. Younger Jupiter kept her back pressed against the tree, she could feel her heart pounding... She was tempted to look around to see where Elder Jupiter had gotten to but the fear that the Mykor might not be dead, or there might be another one kept her where she was. It was a long moment before a very angry looking Elder Jupiter came stalking towards her niece, "Are you alright?" "Yes... I... I attacked and all I did was annoy the thing." "I told you to wait, did you notice it wasn't moving towards you?" Younger Jupiter shook her head, "I'm sorry I just saw it move and reacted on instinct." "Reacted on instinct? What if we had been providing security and you noticed a motion... You might wind up killing an innocent person. The Mykor was headed for the rock." Elder Jupiter turned back toward the city and said, "We'll discuss this with Aranche when we get back." "But it looked at me!" Younger Jupiter protested. "It looked at you but it's motion was forward moving, it wanted to make sure you weren't going to attack it... unfortunately you did." With that Elder Jupiter set off at a brisk pace. Younger Jupiter sighed, she could tell this was not going to be a fun day. Chapter 5 : Gathering clouds Juno McCloud sent a pleading look towards her aunt. Ariel pointedly ignored the look and continued through the McCloud main compound looking for Arachne. "It was a mistake, do we have to tell her?" Juno asked, she wasn't looking forward to the lecture that Arachne would give her. Or the work out that was bound to follow. "Tell me what?" Arachne purred from a sun filled window cill. To Juno's utter horror Ariel gave a play by play of what happened. Arachne's eyes narrowed and by the end of the tale her claws were partially extended. "In the name of Jupiter's Great Spire! What in the world did you think you were doing!?" Arachne demanded, "You're lucky Ariel was there!" "Come on, I thought it was heading for me and I defended myself." Juno protested, "It isn't like I waited for the thing to come charging at me and then decide it was a threat!" Juno crossed her arms and glared daggers at the moon cat. "This isn't the first time you've fired at something you were told not to fire at." Arachne countered, Juno flushed and lowered her eyes, "Let me hear your account." Juno slowly told Arachne what had happened, by the end she knew that she'd jumped in too quickly without thinking the situation over. That depressing thought brought Juno's spirits crashing down. "I know you meant well. You've done a very respectable job; your father should be proud that his daughter has achieved so much. But you still have the very dangerous habit of jumping into things." Arachne looked at Juno and sighed slightly, "Why don't you go work off some of that... er... energy by helping put up that new house." Juno brightened and quickly slid down the hall and outside again. Ariel shook her head and gave Arachne a scratch between the shoulder blades, "Oh yes! Thanks... Say why don't you go stalk that soon to be husband of yours and have a little fun?" "You're right, maybe I will." With that Ariel turned and walked down the hall, Arachne never saw the smile on Ariel face. "I have to see this!" Arachne declared to no one in particular, "Finally after all this work she finally gets the hint!" ****** Juno shuffled her feet, it was two days after the Mykor encounter and she was in hot water again. Actually, according to Juno it wasn't her fault that the guy couldn't fight. She was standing outside her father's study waiting to be called in. After another five minutes, which seemed like five hours the doors swung open and her Father motioned her inside. Korric walked over and stood behind his desk for a moment before sitting down and motioning Juno to close the doors. "Tell me please why you were... ah having a dispute with Lord McKinnin's oldest boy?" "He said Europa was small for a McCloud," Juno growled, "I said he was small for a snot nosed little twerp." "So you start throwing punches because he supposedly insulted Europa?" Juno grimaced slightly before saying, "Well... He was implying that Philip was more like a girl than a guy." There was a squeal of outrage, Juno glanced around but Korric seemed not to have noticed it, "I said he was an infant... Well one thing lead to another and he asked me if Ariel was still changing my diapers." "So you swung on him?" Juno nodded her head, "Now that I have the story I'll let Ariel deal with you. Fortunately you're under her care. I may not get along with McKinnin but I respect him. If there was a problem WE would have handled it." "Do you have to tell Aunt Ariel?" "Yes, you young lady are about to take on the role of Sailor Jupiter. I will not have that office disgraced." Juno waited but her father seemed not to have anything else to say so she quickly left the room and shut the doors. Once Juno was out of the study Korric turned around and pulled the curtain back. There standing behind it was his eleven year old daughter looking sheepishly at the floor. "Well young lady, you seem to be up to mischief again. Now let's you and I have a little talk." Europa groaned, she knew what was going to occur. Chapter 6 : Stalking "I want you to stop her rite of passage." Lord McKinnin said calmly as if he was talking about an everyday occurrence. "Stop her passage?" Ariel questioned, "There are few ways to do that and I really don't think anything could convince me to do such a thing." "Juno McCloud is not healthy for Jupiter. She fights with her fists instead of her head. Her father is sympathetic to Earth. If the king is allowed to gain control of the Senshi of Jupiter he will have more power." "I am the senshi and his sister, yet Korric does not have that much power. I hardly see what the problem is." Ariel countered, she was starting to get an uneasy feeling about this meeting. "Can you honestly say with your heart that Juno McCloud can think before acting? What about that bad harvest, would Juno as Sailor Jupiter been willing to sit back when she had to? I think she would have been one of those proposing force measures to get food." Ariel chewed on this thought, "I still think she's good for the office. Yes she's young but with time she'll become more experienced." "Well then we will see what the council meeting holds. It meets tomorrow, if you're so sure about Juno then you'll be out of office by tomorrow." Somehow Ariel doubted it, her father wasn't the type to give up so easily. Chapter 7 : Beginning of the cold war The council chamber was one of the few ornate structures dedicated to the public. It's circular interior had enough seating for all of the clan leaders, the Lord Councillor and thier advisors. There were two other people present at this council session. They were Elder and Younger Jupiter. "Is there any business before I turn the floor over to Elder Jupiter?" The Lord Councillor boomed, "I recognize Lord McKinnin." McKinnin stood up swept the chamber with his gaze for a moment before saying, "I call a Rite of Succession on Juno McCloud. The McKinnin Clan would like Elder Jupiter to speak in her charge's defence." Korric thought, he had missed it. He'd been so wrapped up with other business especially the Earthers that he'd missed McKinnin's movements. "Elder Jupiter?" The Lord Councillor queried, "How say you?" Elder Jupiter rose and carefully walked to the center of the room. She breathed deeply for a few moment before saying, "I at first was willing to see Juno McCloud take on the office as Sailor Jupiter. However in the past few days certain events that have occurred require me to reconsider my decision." Ariel heard Juno gasp but didn't turn around, she couldn't face her niece, "Clan Council, a senshi must not only be able to fight but think with her head. This is vital because not every enemy can be dealt with by brute force. Nor is it always desirable to use strength." "Elder Jupiter, are you now saying that Younger Jupiter may not take the office?" There was a heavy silence before Ariel said, "No Lord Councillor, I am simply saying that a senshi must use both head and strength. Younger Jupiter has the strength and with age will come the experience that is required. She will most likely hold the office longer than I have given her age so she will... grow into it." Elder Jupiter thought as she sat back down. "Is your clan satisfied Lord McKinnin?" McKinnin sent a black look Elder Jupiter's way before saying, "Yes... Then I bring into question the Neutrality Principle." "That is uncalled for!" Korric shot up in rage, "That principle has not been applied in the last four hundred years. There is no case for it now." "My Lord, if you please?" Korric sat down with a scowl across his face, "Lord McKinnin would you please make your case, I suggest you do it quickly." The Lord Councillor almost snarled out. "Given the young age of Younger Jupiter and also given the fact that Younger Jupiter's father IS King Korric I find it highly probable that Younger Jupiter would not be able to remain neutral to Korric. He could use his influence to get her favour if needed." He noticed Younger Jupiter was glaring at him and the only thing keeping her still was the firm grip Elder Jupiter had on her arm. "This council is adjourned while I considered the case." The Lord Councillor said. both Korric and Elder Jupiter thought. Chapter 8 : Upheld "Elder Jupiter." Came a voice, it broke through Elder Jupiter's concentration. Turning she saw it was Manse Everard, "Yes?" "I need to talk to you." Manse seemed rather nervous about something. Seeing Elder Jupiter nod he guided her over to an unoccupied corner of the council chamber. She was about to ask what he wanted when he said, "Could you change back please?" She was about to shoot down the request but seeing the pleading look in his eyes complied. "Now what's the matter Everard, you're not one to come talk to me... At least not in this public a place." "That's just it," Manse said softly, "Your father would never suspect it. Look as far as he knows I'm giving you some advice on how to handle the Lord Councillor or Younger Jupiter. I am Lord McKinnin's legal advisor." "Well?" Ariel asked, for a person who usually kept calm and collected Manse was certainly acting out of sorts. "Your father has set up a public speech after this. He's that confident that his principal of neutrality will go through that Younger Jupiter's succession will be cut short and she'll never take the office." Ariel could feel the pit of her stomach drop out from under her. Of all the underhanded things to do this was perfectly legal and the argument was fairly sound. It not only brought into question the King's integrity without him having any recourse except mud slinging and also stopped what McKinnin didn't want, Juno in place of his daughter. "What's the speech about?" Ariel didn't like the pained expression that flitted across Manse's face. "His lordship has decided that if his argument is upheld he'll use that as the basis for a censuring of the king." "Great Spire!" Ariel hissed out, "Is he gone mad? That could be dangerous." "Listen, I can't talk much more. McKinnin is watching me. I'll tell him we were mapping out how to proceed if the argument is defeated. You've played that game before." With that Manse hurried away towards his employer. Ariel noticed the Lord Councillor coming back so she transformed back and took up her position. Younger Jupiter was glaring daggers at Lord McKinnin but appeared to have calmed down enough not to do anything against Lord McKinnin. Soon the council was called to order. "The Neutrality Principle is very old, however it is still legal. Therefore I must uphold Lord McKinnin's argument. I will however given Lord McCloud ten days to either withdraw his daughter's application, as she is not of independent age, or present evidence that may nullify the claim." The council chamber broke into chaos, and it was some time before the council could formally be dismissed. Chapter 9 : First days Korric was in a foul mood, it also didn't help that Juno was in a even fouler mood. She kept stalking about the house muttering darkly to herself or raging at the unfairness of it all. McKinnin's speech had done it's job. It had laid the foundation for a call of censure. Now Korric was sitting in his office, hands folded in front of him, deep in thought. Hearing a knock he said, "Enter!" Juno stepped in, shut the door and without preamble said, "Attack him!" "Pardon?" "Attack that over stuffed cow! Make him take back his claim!" Juno was obviously in her rage mood but was now directing it at someone. Not a healthy thing to do in the current political climate. "Juno please, do not even suggest that. If our political rivals heard they could call you for treason against a clan lord and I couldn't do anything to stop it from going to trial. I'd have to show favouritism to family and at the moment that's dangerous." "He robbed me! I spent the last few years training. It is a position I truly want. Not because of the privileges but because I want to do something to help my people. Eric will take over for you some day and I want to make my contribution." Korric was touched, "I know Juno." He turned his head and looked out the window, "Lord McKinnin also has a point. He is doing what he thinks is best. He doesn't hold any malice towards you. It's Earth." "I don't see what's wrong with Earth. Most Earthers are friendly." "It's political Juno. If we didn't have men like McKinnin around I'm afraid Earth would simply scoop up Jupiter... That could have vast reaching consequences." "I still don't... What are you driving at?" "Juno think, let's assume that Earth was given free rein here? What would be the first step that Earth would take?" Juno scowled slightly before saying, "Well, I'd want to protect my new found position so I'd..." She trailed off her eyes growing wide, "They'd bring troops. They could have a large regiment here..." "Correct, and what would Mars think about this?" "They wouldn't like it at all... Would Mars really go to war?" "Possible, a large build up of troops here on Jupiter would make it look like Earth was trying to reach outward and cut off the other inner planets. The outers might also feel threatened, it would depened on how the build up was viewed." "But if Mars went to war..." The horror of the thought was plain on Juno's face, "Yes Juno. If Mars went to war it would only be a matter of time before the other inner and possibly outer planets were drawn into the conflict. The battle ground would most likely be here on Jupiter. So don't be decieved by Earthers, they have all good intentions but some are just more loyal to Earth." Chapter 10 : Tensions "Place it IN FRONT of them. All we want to do is disperse the crowd." Elder Jupiter said to her younger counterpart. It had been only a matter of time. Those loyal to McKinnin, or against earth, or any person who felt like letting off steam was in this mob. They'd come up with a hair-brained scheme to toss the Earth colony people off Jupiter. As the colony only had a limited number of guards a request for the senshi's assistance was sent out. It didn't take long for Elder and Younger Jupiter to arrive. Actually they'd been waiting in the side lines waiting. Younger Jupiter nodded her acknowledgement and started her attack when a well aimed rock hit her squarely between the eyes. She staggered back and lifted a gloved hand to her to feel the impact area; the throbbing through her head wasn't painful but rather distracting. She winced at her touch and drew a gloved hand to show a small amount of blood. "Are you okay?" The voice seemed louder then normal. Younger Jupiter nodded slightly and gritting her teeth fired off her attack. It arced over the barrier they were standing behind and hit squarely in front of the crowd. The screams of rage soon changed to screams of terror, they had expected to be fighting Earthers and maybe even a few of Jupiter's military but senshi were a different matter all together. It also had to be one of the few times people had ever actually seen a senshi attack before. As their companions fled while swearing revenge, others simply stood there mouths open, blinking to try and clear the after image. "What are they staring at?" Younger Jupiter asked, she felt uneasy being watched like this. "You... or more specifically the after image of your attack." came Arachne's voice from behind them. "That's probably the first time they have actually seen a Senshi attack. If they have seen it before then it's the first time that they have been on the receiving end." After making sure it was safe Younger Jupiter transformed back to her regular clothing and gave a sigh. "Maybe I should get used to this..." Ariel placed a hand on Juno's shoulder and said, "Don't worry, things will work out." Juno felt a flicker of irritation but ignored it. Ariel's father was doing what he thought best for the planet, she certainly didn't agree with that thought but there was very very little Juno could do about it. Sighing again she started towards her home. "I wish this could have been different for her." Arachne said, "I have a terrible feeling that what ever happens someone will get hurt by this." "I know, Arachne go stay with her for awhile, see if you can cheer her up. I have to talk to someone..." Chapter 11 : Plans are formed Juno kicked a stone, it bounced it's way along the road for a bit and then bounced off into the bushes. She heard the padding of feet and turned around to see Arachne trying to catch up. Stopping Juno bent down and when the persain was within reach scooped up the cat. "Thank you, your legs must be a mile long." Arachne said, "Or I'm getting fat!" Juno was about ot make a remark but thought better of it. "Let's have a lesson." Arachne suggested. "What's the use... McKinnin will keep me out." Juno said sullenly, "There's no way that my father could..." The young girl trailed off and stopped walking. "What is it?" Arachne asked, looking around. "Is something wrong?" Juno remained quiet but quickly set off towards her private thinking spot. She walked through the jungled undergrowth but seemed not to mind the vines that clawed at her legs. She came to the base of a large tree and making sure no one was around crawled up the large trunk. The tree had to be at least two hundred years old. The weight of age causing it to lean to one side, its sturdy trunk was rough and its many branches made an excellent place to hide. Juno came here to think or simply to get away from it all. After settling herself comfortably, leaning back against a sturdy branch and putting Aranche on her lap Juno started talking, "Arachne what's the biggest thing stopping me from taking the office?" "Neutrality Principle." Arachne answered curiously. "What if I wasn't my father's daughter?" Arachne chewed on that for a second, "`Not your father's daughter?', that would be hard to accomplish... However I can't see McKinnin presuing the issue." Arachne cocked her head and added, "And I certainly don't think your father would go for it." Juno was starting to get excited, "So if I could get another clan to take me..." "Hold it!" Arachne said, "Stop!" Juno's features clouded as she looked at Arachne, "Get another clan to take you? I think I know where you're headed and it wouldn't work." "Why not?!?" Juno protested, "So I get one of them to take me in as a clan member." "Are you an Earther?" Arachne bluntly asked, "Where has Juno McCloud gone, what your talking about would stip you of the McCloud name... I certainly see your father objecting to that." Juno remained silent for several minutes before saying, "What about... What about fostering?" Arachne's mouth swung open and a small gurgling sound came out. After shaking her head a new look entered her eyes. It was the huntress. She'd stalked her prey, now it was in sight. "There are problems Juno... If you've thought of that you're likely to have thought of the problems." Juno nodded, "We'd have to get a particular person within a clan to ask father; the real question is what clan and who?" Arachne didn't have an answer for that, it would be up to Juno to figure out the best solution. "Ariel?" "What?" Arachne questioned, "You mean get her to approach your father?" "Yes, I've spent a lot of time with Ariel. I do know her family and I wouldn't feel right about asking anyone else." "I'll speak to Ariel about it." Arachne said, "But Juno you have to understand that there are still some probelms with this solution so it might not work." "It'll work." ****** Ariel's expression that night was rather blank as Arachne told her the plan. She listened carefully to what had happened before placing a hand over her eyes and shaking her head slightly. "It is a good idea... I would be willing to go along with it but there are problems." "Yes," Arachne agreed, "I agree, the biggest is someone calling the Neutrality Principle upon you and given your relationship and status it's likely that we would be in the same boat." "If only I could..." Ariel trailed off and smiled, "If only I could become a silent walker." "What?" Arachne hissed out, "Ariel what has gotten into your head?!?" "I foster Juno into the McKinnin clan and then promptly become a shadow, clanless!" Ariel declared, "Juno would still keep the McCloud name but be a McKinnin, father would have to withdraw his claim because she would no longer be McCloud's daughter and his claim's unsupportable." "But if you foster Juno and then as you put it `become a shadow', what's to stop your father from trying to control her?" Both Ariel and Arachne whirled around to find Manse Everard standing in the door way. The look of terror and outrage on Ariel's face caused Manse to defend himself, "I agree with you but the question did have to be put." Ariel took several deep breathes and then after another minute or so said, "Come in..." She waited until Manse was in the room and had the door closed, "If I foster Juno that would make her MY daughter. Since I know what I'll do next I could name her father as legal gaurdian, that way she can stay where she is." Arachne turned to Manse and smugly beamed; she had just been paid back for her efforts. "That prey is within reach and we're going for the kill!" She declared. "One problem, how do you become a silent walker intentionally?" "I assult my brother." Ariel declared, Arachne fainted and fell off the desk, Manse wasn't long standing either. Chapter 12 : Boiling point Korric was waiting in his study for Juno to enter. The letter from his sister was sitting on his desk. The smooth paper had been crinkled several times as he had read it over and over. Korric's first thought was to dismiss it totally. The plan sounded overly complex, he also didn't like what his sister had planned either to ensure the success. He heard the door open and close. Turning he sat back at his desk and looked at Juno. "You wanted to see me?" Juno asked. The time limit was nearly up, pressures outside were mounting. People were growing angrier, they were seeing Juno's assention as a move by the king to ensure his power. McKinnin's underlings were doing an excellent job of spinning facts and blurring what was rumor and what was truth. "Yes, has Arachne talked to you?" Juno shook her head, "Here read this." Korric said and handed Juno the letter. He watched as his daughter's eyes grew big and by the end of the letter her breathing had increased, "She's serious about this..." "It's crazy!" Juno shouted dropping the letter on the desk, "I know I thought of it but why should Aunt Ariel have to..." Juno struggled with how to put it, "That!" Korric clasped his fingures together and after a long pause said, "Juno would you be willing to do what this plan requires?" Korric turned slightly and without waiting for the answer said, "I was going to reject this, but there is no other way. McKinnin's case is strong, I would have to remove your from the succession process." "Does... does it have to end like that?" Juno asked, she wanted nothing more than to be Sailor Jupiter but she wasn't willing to pay that cost, her heart wouldn't let her. "Yes... I doubt that it will be totally bad though. It would probably never become public knowledge, we almost have civil war now. This last blow would strike the spark to set it off." Juno was silent, lost in thought. ****** Elder Jupiter watched from the shadowed area of the bushes as the patrol made it's rounds. They passed by her position and rounded the fartherest corner of the house. She thought to herself as she ran across the ground and to the side of the house. Quietly she ran in the opposite direction from which the guards and went aorund the back of the house. Elder Jupiter thought as she made her way towards the large window that provided a splendid view for the office of Korric. She called upon her powers and fired a shot off towards the window. The Thunderball made contact and blew the large window inwards, she could hear shouts of surprise from those inside the house. Running she darted into the window and came face to face with a surprised looking Younger Jupiter. They paused for a moment, Younger Jupiter looked like she was about to say something when they heard the guards at the door. In a swift move Younger Jupiter tackled her aunt and proceeded to wrestle with the intrueder. The guards that burst into the room were at first confused, they saw the two senshi wrestling each other with the shattered window behind them. "Come on give me a hand here!" Younger Jupiter barked out as her aunt increased the pressure and started to overcome her opponent. It took a few more seconds for the guards to work up the nerve to go in and help Younger Jupiter. Elder Jupiter thought sourly, "What now?" She could see that more guards had come and she was effectively encircled. "I'm place you under arrest." Younger Jupiter said, "Take her away..." She noticed the questioning look that the lead guard sent her and scowled, "Go on!" That was all the prompting they needed. Elder Jupiter was hustled out of the office, she went without resistance but did critique the guards performance. Younger Jupiter muffled her chuckling, the plan was going to work! Chapter 13 : Completing the cycle Galen Morgan sighed while shaking his head. As Lord Councillor he could act as a Justice Minister, a Jovian version of a judge, but it seemed that none of them wanted this case so it had landed in his lap. He had been swiftly contacted and appraised of the events; personally he didn't believe a damn word of it but it wouldn't do just to brush such matters off. Ariel had been known to have a temper where her brother was concerned so... Now Galen was sitting in his office scowling at Elder Jupiter, "What the hell are you trying to pull?" He was being frank, he had dismissed the guards who seemed releaved to get away from the senshi, or rather her critique of thier performance. "Look, accept my plea of guilty and then we can move on to the meat of the matter." Ariel stubbornly said. Seeing Galen set his jaw she sighed and said, "My motivations are my own except that it could be considered an attempt on the king's life." "This is too weird for you... Damn it all tell me! Look we've worked well together before now what are you up to?" "What make's you think I'm up to anything?" Ariel put on an innocent face. "One, that supposed attack was simply a powder puff. Look at what you can actually do, compared to that it was nothing! Two, you wouldn't have attacked from outside. You could have easily gotten in to see your brother, killed him, and then slid away with no one being the wiser. Three, you stayed and offered no resistance... I could go on but I think you see what I mean." "I want to be a silent walker." Ariel said calmly. The shocked expression that spread across Galen's face was as expected. He jumped up from his chair stalked around his desk and stopped in front of Ariel. "Alright, I want everything. You're up to something, I have near civil war on my hands and I can't have one of the best people disappearing on me so spit it out or I clear the books and pretend this never happened." Galen held up his finger as Ariel started to protest and said, "Might I remind you that we are opperating under martial law at the moment. This gives me extended powers. Those guards are loyal, if I say it wasn't anything they'll keep their own thoughts to themselves and you won't have accomplished what you wanted." "You might as well tell him Ariel." Arachne's voice floated in, both humans turned in surprise to see the Moon Cat looking at them intently. "He's cornered you, sneaky... Say you wouldn't be interested in turning into a cat would you?" Ariel snickered while Galen just rolled his eyes... ****** With eight signatures most of the plan was complete. Ariel and Korric. Then they signed the gaurdianship papers so that if something happened to Ariel then Juno would come under the gaurdianship of Korric. "Are you sure?" Korric asked, he had asked that same question several times. He felt like he was betraying the bond that had developed between him and Ariel. Yes they fought but more over political idology rather than dislike for each other; this was very different though and somewhat terrifying. The possibility of things going wrong flitted through Korric's mind and wouldn't leave him alone. "Yes." Ariel said and then moved off down the hallway with her guards. She was going to get something to complete the final phase of the plan, something to give Juno what she wanted. ****** The council chamber was silent as Elder Jupiter and Younger Jupiter faced each other. They remained like that for a few moments before Elder Jupiter walked over to a near by table that had guards around it. The box it self was not really remarkable, it was more cubical, about one and a half feet cubed. It appeared to be solid in nature with no way of opening it. Hiding the opening process Elder Jupiter flipped open the lid and removed from it an item. As her aunt turned around Younger Jupiter could see that the item she held was spherical in nature. As Elder Jupiter drew closer to stand in front of her niece Younger Jupiter could see that the sphere was a near perfect representation of Jupiter. She had been told what the sphere did but had never seen it before. The sphere was a representation of Jupiter, a mantle to be kept by the next Sailor to hold the office of Sailor Jupiter. It would pull a tiny amount of life force out of the departing elder and infuse it into the Younger Senshi. Therefore this ceremony literally represented a transfer of power. In a very solemn voice Elder Jupiter said, "I, Ariel McKinnin, Elder Jupiter and lawful representative of Jupiter release my claim upon the title and office of Sailor Jupiter. I deem Juno McCloud, Younger Jupiter ready to accept the mantle of duty; having proved to me that she is capable of receiving the title and responsibilities of the office of Sailor Jupiter. I give you my advice, wisdom and loyalty, I also give you my power." With that final statement the sphere flared briefly, then the light was gone and the sphere was pulsing slightly. Younger Jupiter's breathe had begun to speed up, here was the time that she had been waiting for. She thought everyone in her room could hear her heart pounding a her chest. Why was she terrified? Glancing around she saw that not one face was smiling. Her father, King Korric, was looking solemnly on. Lord McKinnin who usually looked sour was now keeping a neutral expression. She glanced at her Aunt who was holding the sphere motionless waiting. Tentavely at first Younger Jupiter wrapped her hands around the sphere and spoke the words slowly, they felt awkward in her young mouth, "I, Juno McCloud, Younger Jupiter accept the title, responsibilities and privileges granted by the office of Sailor Jupiter. I recognize that at times I may be called up to act in the best interest of Jupiter and though it may go against those I love or those that are of my clan." Younger Jupiter stopped for a moment, here was the tricky part, "I accept your wisdom but will consider all options, I accept your loyalty but know that it may not hold," One last step and she was there, she thought her heart stopped as she said, "I also accept your power." Elder Jupiter released the sphere, stepped back, and bowed, "My Laird, Lord Councillor and members of the Clan Council you have witnessed the succession of power. The circle is complete once again. May Jupiter allow you to see many more." With another bow to her brother, Elder Jupiter took two steps back, turned sharply around and left. ****** Galen rose as the Elder Jupiter left the room. When the door were once again closed he said. "Lord and Ladies of the Clan of Jupiter it is my duty to call a vote of penalty against Ariel McKinnin." He waited several minutes as for the chamber to calm down again. McKinnin wasn't taking the announcement very well, he looked like he might just keel over. "Lord McKinnin are you alright?" "Y-Yes Lord Councillor... Thank you, it was just the shock." Galen didn't miss the flicker of a smile that sped it's way accross Korric's face. Taking another breath Galen outlined the charges and the penalty desired. Galen silently thought to himself. There was no explosion of surprise, no out burst simply stunned sillence. Motioning the clerk to being taking the vote Galen waited in anticipation. There was a chance that the plan wouldn't work, and for the breifest of time it appeared that way. However when Korric voted in favour of the penalty others were quick to take the hint. McKinnin lived true to his clan and voted against the penalty citing that death would be more preferable. Some of his supporters nodded but supported the other side. They knew which way the wind was blowing and it would be wise to get to the other side as quickly as possible before McKinnin took them with him. "Call in Ariel McKinnin." Galen said once the vote was tallied. Ariel entered wearing civilian clothes. She had detransformed. Galen swallowed once before saying, "It is the ruling of the Clan Council of Jupiter that Ariel McKinnin be stripped of all clan titles, priviligies and obligations. Except in the need for basic survival Ariel McKinnin does not exist and has no legal authority except in times of crisis." One by one the lords and ladies of the council filled out of the room. Sailor Jupiter soon found herself alone with a shadow... someone, who to her, could not exist. Stepping over to the door Sailor Jupiter said, "Thank you." before slipping out of the room. Epilog : Letter Dear Cousin, I hope this letter finds you in good health. No doubt you have been watching the unfolding events on Jupiter with some interest; as a member of one of the largest trading guilds on Earth you have a vested interest in a open market on Jupiter. I can see your surprised look now, yes some of the events that have occurred will lead to a smoother flow of goods now that my employer's power is slowly slipping out of his grasps. With the ascension of Younger Jupiter to the office, replacing her aunt, Lord McCloud will now have more clout although I do not see him using the new power gained immediately. Jupiter slid to the brink. Those outside of Jupiter, at least the general populace, do not know how close it came to civil war. Younger Jupiter has shown that she can also think as well as use physical means. I shiver at the thought of what would have happened if these events had lead to a fractured Jupiter. With the previous bad harvest a few years ago sliding into civil war would have been terrible. The Earth might have profited but at what cost? I certainly don't think the other Inner System planets would have stood by and simply observed. Needless to say Mars would have certainly jumped in to join forces with the old guard. They would see it as a chance to help keep those opposed to Earth in power. This would have drawn Earth in also because the Earth sees Jupiter as a good staging point and the vast untapped resources are quite valuable. The fate of Elder Jupiter is a strange one. Publicly there was no action taken against her; the Clan Council decided this would be best since they were sitting on a powder keg that could explode. It also helped that King Korric as well as the Younger Jupiter made submissions, as to those I am not privy so I don't know what they said. Privately though Elder Jupiter has been classified as a Silent Walker. She is now an outcast on her own planet, no clan will acknowledge any association with her except in times of emergency, or to keep the public peace. This is a divesting blow considering that she is now unable to marry her fiancee. I learned this from my employer. My employer was not pleased to see this happen. He won't admit it but he truly cared for the Elder Jupiter. I must admit it's understandable considering she was fostered to him at an early age. Now isn't that just an interesting tib bit? I thought you'd be surprised to hear that; it is rare now for a clan to foster a child out to another clan. Although the reason behind this action, as I was told, was for political reasons that have now been buried in the past. I have not determined what my future holds for me though. My position is shaky at the moment. Either it will solidify into something tangible or I might consider leaving and returning to Earth. Oddly enough I received a letter from Elder Jupiter asking to speak with me. I suspect I know what this is about but I could be wrong. I wish I could tell you all but there are certain things that I need to keep secret for the well being of Jupiter as well as others that I care for. I have probably said too much already but I thought I would write you one last time. Given the enemies I have made it will be unlikely that I will be able to write you again. Your Friend M.
